Bobby Petrino resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach on Tuesday and will take the head coaching job at Arkansas, sources told FOXSports.com. He lasted only 13 games with the NFL team.
Petrino called a staff meeting late Tuesday afternoon, a meeting which last about 10 seconds, sources said.

"He just said to us, 'Guys I've resigned, I'm going to Arkansas. I'm sorry. I'll be talking with you guys in the future.' And with that he turned and walked out the door. We haven't been told anything else," said one assistant coach.

At this point, the assistant coaches have not been told who will be coaching the team going forward.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers' loss at New England keeps getting worse.
Aaron Smith, one of the Steelers' best defensive players, is out for the rest of the season after he tore a biceps muscle during the 21-point loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

Smith, a defensive end, is an excellent run defender and one of the Steelers' most reliable players since breaking into the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick in 1999. He tried to keep playing during the 34-13 loss, but had to be replaced several times.

CHICAGO -- Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Kyle Turley, a nine-year NFL veteran, said Tuesday he has agreed to donate his paycheck for the Dec. 23 game against the Detroit Lions to an organization that is helping aging football retirees who are in dire medical and financial need.

With the donation -- which amounts to about $25,000 after taxes -- to the nonprofit Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, Turley becomes one of the first active professional football players to openly criticize the leadership of the NFL Players Assn. for what he sees as the union's failure to provide adequate assistance to NFL veterans who are struggling.

"I have to come out against these neglects even if it means my opportunity to play football next year ends because I get blackballed," Turley said before the start of a news conference here. "What I've seen with these retired players infuriates me."

Turley hopes that his donation will prompt other active players to turn over their game paychecks on Dec. 23, a day being dubbed "Gridiron Guardian Sunday."

Maybe he found out that Chris Redman can play there for a couple of years.

heh

He wants the easier life of a college coach.  Where he can be respected and have good recruitment classes.  It's completely different in the NFL.  I think the players would probably chew up and spit out a clueless coach.  Not saying he was clueless but it's a possibility.  And also, he had to deal with the implosion of Michael Vick, that couldn't have been a pretty way to spend your time.

happypervert -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/11/2007 8:40:56 PM)

Yeah, I'm sure Petrino had a rude awakening when he got to the NFL. I was just scratching my head to see Redman in there after Petrino apparently ran off both Leftwich and Harrington. Not that those QBs were going to take the Falcons to the Super Bowl, but they might have had a better chance of winning a few games than a guy who had washed out of the NFL and had been selling insurance.

So there's Petrino, Spurrier, and Dennis Erickson as some coaches who were wooed out of the college ranks with expectations they would light up the NFL . . . and ended up running back to college with their tails between their legs. Nick Saban might qualify too, though at least he was in the NFL as an asst coach. And the flip side is a mediocre NFL coach like Pete Carroll can seem like a genius as a college coach if he can recruit . . . and we've got Charlie Weis who proved this year that his rep was made on Belicheck's coattails. Yup, it's a different game for sure.

Let's not forget Lou Holtz, who ran the Jets into a 3-11 record in the one year he coached in the NFL, then hauled ass to Arkansas (what is it about the soooeeee folks?)

what is it about the soooeeee folks?

Considering Holtz's record of NCAA violations at just about every school he worked and former soooeee BB coach Nolan Richardson's 0% graduation rate, let's just say they aren't too picky about much beyond the W-L record for the sports teams at their esteemed university.

Edit to add: Oink!

2. The SEC is becoming a rehab facility for NFL coaches gone bad. Roll call: South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (12-20 with the Redskins), Alabama's Nick Saban (15-17 with the Dolphins), Kentucky's Rich Brooks (13-19 with the Rams) and now Petrino (3-10 with the Falcons).
