Aspartame gives me horrible migraines.  Horrible.  Since I basically stopped ingesting that stuff, I have yet to feel like someone took a hammer to my skull.

I didn't know that about you!!  Yay no diet cokes for us!!

Make that the three of us! I am DEATHLY allergic to aspartame and one sip will trigger amazingly violent headaches and an astronomical spike in blood pressure.

The OP noted that she works with a woman who can work with a migraine. Migraines are debilitating headaches and I too, have often heard people proclaim "Oh, I have such a migraine" while at work. I would personally contend that what they are dealing with are not migraines. During a headache I am NON functional and frequently can not even form speech that is understandable or understand the speech of others. I am usually vomiting and can not even stand without help. My vision becomes extremely compromised and everything appears as though I am viewing it through broken glass.

I have had severe headaches of the migraine/cluster varieties most of my life, starting in my teen years. I spent over 10 years trying to have them diagnosed. Eventually they became so severe that I was hospitalized in a hospital for chronic head pain at the age of 26 for a year with them and told that I would not survive. A fluke of luck ultimately led to finding the underlying cause....for me it was a long (many years) undiagnosed case of Lyme disease compounded with hormonal factors.

I still get them and when I do immediate emergency medical attention is necessary as preventatives and normal migraine treatments seem to have little effect on them. Thankfully though, what was once a daily part of life is now limited to one or two bouts a year.

I never had much luck with the ice pack on the neck thing....actually, that usually intensified them. What worked better for me was hot packs to the back of the neck and ice packs on the forehead and temples. I tried the marijuana thing...again it only intensified them. You do have to be very careful with over the counter products and prescription pain killers as many of them will indeed cause the headaches to rebound.

My best advice is to actively pursue medical care....and don't stop until you are at a place where YOU feel that you are getting the best help and the correct diagnosis and treatment. No one knows how you feel better than you. I went through many, many doctors in my search to end my pain....and had MANY diagnoses including MS, Epstein-Barr, Lupus and many others. I also had my fair share of docs who told me it was all in my head....well duh....didn't need a rocket scientist to tell me my headaches were in my head...lol. Just don't give up and don't settle for less than you think is quality care.

A very close family member was diagnosed with migraines and went through pain-med treatment for years with little or no relief.  She saw doctor after doctor....finally one referred her to the Diamond Headache Clinic...all those years she had been misdiagnosed....migraines = no...she had cluster headaches.  Turns out there are numerous types of headaches, and until your type is pinpointed it is generally a life of headache pain, and misery.
If nothing else ....maybe something to check into.

Believe it or not, I never had a "regular headache" until I went to college.  I had no idea what anyone was talking about until one day I finally experienced aching in my head that was nothing like the migraines I'd experienced since I was a kid.

I can work with one in the beginning stages, but as it develops, there's no way.

Same experience here.  If I can control a migraine at
the beginning, some degree of functionality is possible.
Once it is in full throttle, no work, no play, nothing but
a dark room with ice, ibruprofen and sleep.

I started getting migraines after the birth of my 4th (and last!) UM.  They are completely debillitating and working with one is impossible.  The nausea alone makes concentration impossible.  My doctor told me to take1200 mg of Ibuprophen.  Like everyone else: sleep in a dark and silent room and Ibuprophen is all that can give me any relief.

My migraine cure:

4 execdrine migraine
Cold rag across forehead
Dark quiet place
Show claws at anyone who disturbs until migraine goes away.

If all else fails, there is always puking guts out then curling up in the bathroom floor by the toilet and wait until I can stand and get to bed to rest.

Most of mine i attribute to getting too hot at night, and a small portion are from being on the computer for too long. My eyes are very motion sensitive and if i get into a game too long,  Usually it takes something like this to get me to quit playing.

Ross,
Chocolate (especially dark chocolate) is actually a notorious  migraine trigger.

how many people here deal with chronic migraines? how -do- you deal with them?

so...do you have chronic migraines? how do you handle it? do you take meds, change your eating/sleeping habits, etc.? what's helped the most?

I have had them my whole life..  If my contacts are in, I take them out.  Strange as it sounds, I brush my teeth ( the minty cool taste helps), take a shower..  Meds that work for me include: Fiorocet, imitrex, zomig,  xanax and topramax.  Topramax was originally developed to help curb seizures in epileptic patients.  Turns out it was a very effective migraine medication (approved for migraine use last year).  Nice side effect is weight loss too.  Believe it or not, benedryl works for me too.
Of course, cold dark, quiet room with ice pack on head or neck.

Yoga can help prevent a migraine as well as regular massages.  Keep your neck and back very limber.

Chiropractic adjustments help as well.  As soon as I hear the "crack" of my neck, I can almost feel the migraine dissapating...
If you want to email me, I have alot more tips for you..
Good Luck!

I have had migranes since i was 6 yrs old... i was always told by doctors that kids do not suffer migranes BUT THEY DO.. i take meds for them when i feel them coming on and i have just bought the most fantastic Migra-cap www.migracap.co.uk (some thing i highly reccomend) slip it on when i have taken meds and sleep for an hour and i feel great or if you do not have the time slip it on rather than a cold rag, it covers the eyes everything, check out the site... sadly all my 3 kids now suffer with migranes, 2 boys aged 14 and 11 and my lil 6 yr old girl and bananas and onions can be a trigger for their migraines, as for me its stress, lack of sleep and 2 weeks before my periods...

edited cos i am sooooooooo dumb lol

I have migranes, as well. I just don't let them affect me ... much.

It's important to know why you have a migrane. Although there is no clear consensus as to the cause of migranes, there usually are some "triggers". Usually stress. Some people can have them triggered by alcohol, caffine, changes in diet, etc.

A good thing to do is keep a "migrane journal", in which you record things like how much you slept, what you ate, what you did during the day. That way, you can identify possible "triggers" and avoid them.

Another thing is to identify what type of migrane you have. Mine, for example, are occular, and are caused by reactions in the sympathetic nervous system that contracts the arteries that lead to my brain. The reduccion of oxygen causes the migrane. The logical medication, of course, is beta-blockers.

Most migrane medicine (or the ones I have looked at) basicly are concentrated dosises of acetaminophren/paracetamol. There are some other compounds as well. But the best treatment is usually to prevent them from happening. In my case, identifying the triggers has reduced the incidence of migranes drastically.

mint is an antispasmodic that can often stop the acceleration of headache...and some migraines.  i've had them since i was a teen, some 30+ years now.

really gross remedy that works well.....chamomile in milk.  make it like a tea but use milk instead of water.  if you have ragweed allergies, do NOT use chamomile, it can cause allergic reactions.  mint in milk is also disgusting, but can work well.

otherwise my preferred remedy is to give up, throw up, try to sleep and sic wolf or Sir on anyone who dares try to get me to do anything more strenuous than breathe until i feel better.

Demerol remains my favorite remedy.  The single time it  was given to me was about 10 years ago when my migraine got so bad I had to be taken to the  Emergency Room and threw up all over the doctor.

Aspartame also triggers them for Master PO, he actually came home from work last week with one. I put a quilt up over the bedroom window so it was pitch dark in there, loaded him up with ibuprofen and went out so he could sleep it off in peace. You all have my utmost sympathy, I have only had one once but it was horrible.

Greetings all,

I have had migraines since the age of 12. Nothing ever worked in helping with them until about a year ago my doctor prescribed a new migraine medicine called Relpax. It's a miracle for me. One pill and it's gone. Only once have I had to take 2. (You can only take 2 in a 24 hour period).

with utmost respect,
just a girl

I found that a main trigger for my migraines was caffeine along with other things that have been mentioned here such as stress and artificial additives in food, red wine can also sometimes trigger them in people.  Too much or too little sleep has also made a difference in the past. Particular types of the pill seemed to increase the number of migraines I had. Early recognition of the beginning of the migraine (aura, nausea etc) and laying down in a dark room for a few hours if possible can sometimes prevent it from getting worse.  I take tablets which contain imipramine I think it is. I take one when I feel the migraine starting and one about 4 - 6 hours later if I haven't had any relief.

I also get severe headaches from a past injury which feels like a migraine without the nausea.  Heat packs, a hot shower or spa and heat rubs all help with this (they don't help me with migraines) and codeine based medication.

avoid your triggers. increase your daily intake of caffiene. this has helped me so much that i don't keep my imatrex perscription filled. the down side is that i truely am addicted to caffiene and need it to fill normal. still this self medication is favourable to dealing with migranes. hope this helps- Phoenix     ps I will be rid of the vanillia thing if i have to post the whole night. with enough mnt. dew, who knows?

oh yeah, when you have one, try this: with someone trusted near by, sit down in the shower with the bathroom light turned off and let hot water hit you in the back of the neck. i think it helps the blood circulate away from the temple and opens up the blood ways,,, something like that. Not sure how or why it helps, but it does to some effect. but don't do this alone, migrane pain can render one to the unconscience, and that don't mix well with water. - Phoenix
