how many people here deal with chronic migraines? how -do- you deal with them?

i've had them since i was very young, once a month or so, although in the past couple months they've become much more frequent - sometimes once a week or more. they seem to run in the family - my sister also has them frequently, and my dad had very intense headaches also. i'm just now being treated by a neurologist, which means that i'm able to use actual migraine meds for treatment (for awhile, when i had it on hand for back pain, i would use vicadin every now and then, because it knocked me out long enough to make the pain go away).

however, i tend to be of the "sleep until it's over with" mind, and i have a terrible time functioning at all. i really don't know any better way to deal with them, and i've never learned how. i work with a woman who can work while she has a migraine, which is incredibly hard for me to imagine...i've done it once, wouldn't care to do it again. i'd like to learn how other people manage theirs, though, because i want to be able to further minimize the impact they're having on my life...which seems to be growing. and honestly, on top of the other chronic pain issues i have going on, this one used to be fairly minor and i'd like it to stay that way.

so...do you have chronic migraines? how do you handle it? do you take meds, change your eating/sleeping habits, etc.? what's helped the most?

Prevention is best.

My story is simple- I've had them since I was 8, on a nearly monthly basis.  It was another 3 years before we figured out what they were and started working on eliminating the triggers.

The worst I had was being in agonizing pain overnight, eventually throwing up, passing out.  The good news was that when I woke up I usually felt fabulous and refreshed.

Once we got to eliminating the big triggers (MSG, not sleeping/eating regularly, high stress), my migraines went down to every few months or so.  They were usually less severe, just a few hours of pain which I could usually get to sleep through and wake up better.

In the past years I've experienced waking UP with a migraine on occasion which is just horrible and I do not recommend.

But again, PREVENTION is what is best for me- sleep regularly, eat regularly, keep stress down, avoid MSG ESPECIALLY if the other triggers are present.  If I feel it coming, I can take some exedrine migraine and that often helps for a time.

I don't do prescription mostly because I haven't asked for them or want to pay for them.

Once I get it- cold dark quiet room, sleep.  A cold compress used to work when I was a kid.  I try and orgasm to give myself some relief and maybe go to sleep when the pain wave is less severe.

But otherwise, just have to ride it out.

Nothing is able to eliminate my migraines when I get one. I usually have one for a few days at a time. Medication, sleep, cold, or anything else will not cause them to go away, and I have no clue why. I've been to multiple doctors had MRIs and various other things. It does seem to be related to barometric pressure for me, but that's a very vague correlation.

Chocolate and sex

Seriously

Both contain same chemistry

Aspartame gives me horrible migraines.  Horrible.  Since I basically stopped ingesting that stuff, I have yet to feel like someone took a hammer to my skull.

But they do make good migraine meds now; have you asked your doctor about them?

Vendaval -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/29/2007 9:13:15 PM)

That is interesting, etherealtonic, one of my former bosses had
that same correlation of barometric pressure and migraines.

I wonder what the connection is between the two?

Mine are related to PMS, a neck injury, being near-sighted
and of course, stress.  Ice and ibuprofen and caffeine and sleep
are imperative.  The nausea and throwing up part is so nasty.

Hell, I wish that my head was a removable device at times
like that!  Just take it off until the pain goes out of it and then
re-attach!  lol

TheHeretic -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/29/2007 9:33:47 PM)

Advil Migraine works well for me.  The directions say to take it with at least 8 ounces of water, I've had pretty nasty stomach side effects when I ignored that.

MSG is a trigger and, this is kinda funny since it was mentioned as a treatment, chocolate in immoderate quantities.  I can get away with a little bit of either though.

I've woken up with them a few times in recent months.  That's a new development and not a welcome one.

StacyCat -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/29/2007 9:47:41 PM)

Orgasms usually made mine worse.  I used to be able to take Excedrine Migrane and sleep and I would be fine, now I cant take that medication, so it does not work as well.

Track your migranes, see if they are triggered by certain things.  Mine is by sleep schedule mostly.

LOL! I hate those damn ads, but I'm surprised this thread went this many posts without someone bringing that up.

Someone mentioned having a neck injury, and now that Im thinking about it, I don't remember having many migraines before I recieved a severe neck injury when I was younger (I managed to fracture a vertibre in my neck). I remember frequent headaches before that injury, but they became much worse afterwards.

this slave has had chronic migraines since the onset of puberty (11).  after an almost total hysterectomy at 26, they lessened to once or twice a week.

this slave is allergic to several painkilling pharmeceuticals, and anti-depressant drugs have had more negative effects than positive ones.  the things that have helped the most are preventative... relieving stress & tension by meditation, afternoon naps, ingestion of marijuana, eat right and get enough sleep.  to eliminate nausea and reduce the severity of pain so that sleep can occur once the migraine has set in, this slave ingests marijuana and darkens the room she is in as much as possible.

In 1996, the people of the Great State of California voted in Proposition 215, which is known as "The Compassionate Use Act", decriminalizing the medicinal use of marijuana.

Health & Safety Code 11362.5 — Proposition 215
$11362.5. Use of marijuana for medical purposes.
(a) This section shall be known and may be cited as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.
(b)(l) The people of the State of California hereby find and declare that the purposes of the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 are as follows:
(A) To ensure that seriously ill Californians have the right to obtain and use marijuana for medical purposes where that medical use is deemed appropriate and has been recommended by a physician who has determined that the person's health would benefit from the use of marijuana in the treatment of cancer, anorexia, AIDS, chronic pain, spasticity, glaucoma, arthritis, migraine, or any other illness for which marijuana provides relief...

Yes, marijuana is known for being a good migraine treatment.
The darkened rooms are a must when the light sensitivity
sets in too.  Soaking a couple of towels in ice water and
applying to the back of neck and forehead can bring some
relief as well.

I didn't know that about you!!  Yay no diet cokes for us!!

StellaByStarlite -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 7:25:58 AM)

My migraines started at around 15 and continued regularly ( once a month or more) until I hit my early 30s.

Since they hit their "peak" when I was pregnant, I can only assume they were hormone related. Now, at 35, I'll get them only a few times a year.

Migraine meds only work for me if I take them early on. There does seem to be a point of no return for me with 'em. A cold pack applied on the back of the neck for 15 minute intervals took the edge off. Total dark, total quiet, and elevating my feet worked a little as well.

Empathizing,
Stella

OhBeMyMind -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 7:26:20 AM)

A very close family member was diagnosed with migraines and went through pain-med treatment for years with little or no relief.  She saw doctor after doctor....finally one referred her to the Diamond Headache Clinic...all those years she had been misdiagnosed....migraines = no...she had cluster headaches.  Turns out there are numerous types of headaches, and until your type is pinpointed it is generally a life of headache pain, and misery.
If nothing else ....maybe something to check into.

SexyRed -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 7:32:04 AM)

I have migraines. I just started taking Imitrex and that helps stop them. I used to take painkillers and Excedrin Migraine, but went to a neurologist who said that ironically, caffeine is bad for migraines even though caffeine is in Excedrin.

The worst is waking up with one, that happened last night. I took an Imitrex, ice packs over my eyes and back of neck, dark room, ear plugs and back to sleep.

There really is no cure, you just have to deal with them. They do get worse as you get older though, mine have increased in severity and frequency.

pahunkboy -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 7:42:27 AM)

Consider seeing an accpuncturist.  I would go every day if I could.

thornhappy -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 7:46:13 AM)

i've had them since i was a child.  i was staying quite productive at work, even though i would have 4-5 per month, but was overusing frova (similar in action to Imitrex) and eventually nothing worked.  i finally found a fantastic neurologist and we're working through some better preventive meds (anti-seizure for now).  she's really, really big on the fact that stress reduction, sleep, and exercise are extremely important for prevention along with recognizing triggers.  bwt, naprosyn is the best pain reliver to take because you won't get a rebound effect.

what's really, really evil is headaches caused by orgasms!  man, you get one of these and you'll want someone to fetch a gun.  they need to be checked out because a small number of them are caused by aneurisms.

here's to happier heads,
thornhappy

Vendaval -> RE: dealing with migraines (3/30/2007 8:03:58 AM)

From talking with other people who suffer migraines,
hormones seem to be a major factor, fluctuating with
puberty, PMS, pregnancy and menopause.
(This would not apply to men obviously.)

Also, most of the people I know who have migraines
are women.  Cause or correlation?  hm....
