Agreed, although I think you have to give some credit to the Jets defence, who played well.

I would love to, but I am sure they will do that themselves. Over and over again.

Now I will put on my " good sport hat " : Yes, their defense had our number today. Can't take that away from them.

heh :)

I have to say, modesty isn't something most modern sportsmen are burdened with, and NFL players are some of the worst offenders.

Although I do recall one NFL quarterback, years back, who (after winning) said something like "the team were bad today but I was worse". Can't recall who though.

cloudboy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/16/2011 9:33:34 PM)

I kind of thought the Patriots goose was cooked after the botched fake punt. It combined failed execution on the part of the Patriots (not good) along with a blunder that helped the Jets (similar to a turnover.)

I also found it shocking how much NE was running the ball.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/16/2011 9:46:04 PM)

Another year come and gone...it was painful to watch the Hawks today.   There were times, the ball was thrown long and you couldn't find those gawdy uniforms anywhere on the field!   It was almost as if the Bears were playing themselves.

Ok, thats my NFL sob for the season.

Seemed like a strange decision ....Bellicheck might have outsmarted himself with that call.

How exactly is that possible when the Packers didn't exist until 1921?

Packers / Bears is the oldest rivalry in the NFL, dating back to 1919. Bears have 92 wins, Packers 83 and 6 were tied..

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/16/2011 10:17:29 PM)

Come on mbmn, for years all we've heard out of Foxboro is about how Bill Belichick is a genius and the Pats are the best franchise in the NFL and we hate the Jets and Eric Mangini is a traitor and sure yeah we run up the score hey if you don't like it stop us.

Now that they've lost their last three playoff games, Belichick doesn't look like quite the genius anymore.  He didn't look like a genius when he got outcoached three years ago in the Super Bowl.  He didn't look like a genius when he went for that infamous fourth-and-1 against the Colts.  He didn't look like a genius today.  And he'll NEVER admit that he was outcoached.  Ryan readily admitted that after the 45-3 debacle.  Today all he did in the postgame press conference was blame his players.  How about acknowledging that your game plan sucked monkey cock?

Simple. The mighty Lombardi, with all his greatness, twisted and tore the very fabric of time itself. That was easy for him. Go away with your heretical questions and blasphemous banter sir!

That wasn't the question posed, LAM. I answered the inferred question.

I don't know what press conference you listened to. He did not blame the players and said it was bad coaching. He said the loss was "" we " didn't do a good enough job, " all of us who particpated "... " we didn't play well, we didn't coach well ". If you need a link I'm happy to provide you one.

Yes, we hate the Jets and they/you hate us. No news there. As for running up the score, your boy Rex said just this past week, he would do the same.

As for the other crap about Belichicks genious. I don't think this one loss to the Jets is going to change the legacy he will leave.

You won a Divisional PO game today, you have 2 more games to go, if you're lucky, to accomplish 1/3 of what Belichick has accomplished.

As for my quote that you quoted : I hadn't heard the Bart Scott interview at the time, but he proved my point nicely.

The Packer team was organized on August 11, 1919. They played other teams from Wis and the UP. They were 10 and 1 that first year. They built bleaches in 1921

I really didn't get that one either (the decision to go for it with a fake punt on 4th & 3). There's a very solid reason why teams don't tend to go for it on 4th down in general, and through use of fake punts specifically ... it doesn't generally work against a well ordered defence, and the Jets had already proved by that point in the game that their defence were no mugs. And why go for it then? It's the second quarter, there's no massive lead at that point, and plenty of time left, so why do it? Fake punts are a desperation play, so was Bellicheck really that rattled by what he'd seen to that point in the evening to think "I have to go for this now or we'll fall further behind"?

The Jets touchdown to go 14-3 up was also highly dubious from a Patriots defence POV; the guy (Edwards?) collects a bit of a nothing pass 8 yards out, and then simply steamrollers his way into the endzone, past (or rather through) not one but 2 Patriots defenders. They've both got a piece of him, and one has the positional advantage, but he just powers past.

My fave bit of the evening was Holmes' reception though - stunning. Not just the reception itself (although that was good enough), but also the feet and knee grounding.

When a quarterback throws for 299 yards and comes up with only 3 TDs for his trouble you have to ask yourself whether the execution wasn't all to cock.

But that's one of the things I love most about American football; it throws up some amazing games where the form book gets trodden into the turf. And that was one of those games. The commentators gave the impression at the start of the game that they were only there to record just how big a win the Patriots were going to have; would it be a big one or a really big one? The fact it didn't turn out that way speaks volumes for the Jets defence.

flcouple2009 -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/17/2011 7:17:47 AM)

Getting that team this far was a major accomplishment for Belichick.  The run of wins they put together masked the facts that they still have significant issues on defense, no real running back, and need someone to replace Moss.

Interesting - that was the first game I'd watched this season* - assuming your comments are correct (not having seen other games I wouldn’t know), do you think that’s why Bellicheck went for it on 4th so early? I.e. a lack of faith in the team’s ability to bounce back if they dropped more than 10 points behind?

*I don't ever watch American football unless it's live, and I hadn't been able to find a net portal accessible from the UK that would allow me to view for free, but I found one last night – no idea if it’ll be working again next time round but if I can find one I'm going to watch the rest of the season, because I’d honestly forgotten how much I love watching a good game :)

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/17/2011 8:10:38 AM)

Everything I can find online says that the Packers-Bears rivalry began in 1921.  I'm not an expert in this stuff, but I do have a date: November 27, 1921.  The Chicago Staleys won, 20-0, at Cubs Park (en route to their first championship).  And you can find a schedule online for the Packers in 1919 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1919_Green_Bay_Packers_season).  They didn't play the Staleys.  For that matter, you can find a schedule online for the 1919 Decatur Staleys as well (http://www.independentfootball.site90.com/FootballResearch/ill/ilchib.htm).  They didn't play the Packers.

So I do kinda think you're wrong about this.

Frankly, I thought the Patriots had dominated the Jets starting out the game. But holding NE to a FG and then getting a turnover meant that all those NE yards amounted to bupkus on the scoreboard.

The Fake Punt was an excellent call, but the guy fumbled the snap. I like the fact that Bill prefers to be aggressive on offense and that he seeks to get control of the game.

Here is the impressive fact about the Patriots, they've made the playoffs the last two years despite being in a rebuilding mode. NE is a young team, stocked with draft picks for the 2011 draft with a pro bowl QB at the helm.

NE is poised to make SB runs in 11, 12, and 13. I also see them making the playoffs every year.

The Jets got Brady out of his comfort zone at the Razor. That is a mega-achievement. Braylon Edwards (no dropped balls) and Santonio Holmes (clutch) showed up BIG. Heck, if Boldin and Houzman.... had caught their balls, the JETS might be heading to BAL.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/17/2011 8:42:46 AM)

Belichick's post-game press conference, complete with transcript, can be found here:

http://www.patriots.com/mediacenter/index.cfm?ac=videonewsdetail&pid=47369&pcid=155

This is the kind of comment I'm talking about:

quote:

Q: You scored so well and consistently this season. What was different today?

BB: We didn't do it today. We didn't do it. We gave up too many points. We didn't score enough, didn't have good field position in the kicking game. We just didn't do enough things we need to do to win. You can list them all: too many penalties, too many mistakes, missed tackles, missed blocks, pressure, drops, all of the above. That's what happens when you don't win: you usually have too many of those types of plays.

Yeah, penalties, missed tackles, missed blocks, dropped passes.  How about "Our coaching staff didn't have an answer for Shaun Ellis, which was surprisingly bad on our part, because we have an excellent offensive line and yet they still got pressure without blitzing very often"?  He'd never say anything like that.  That wouldn't be Belichick.

I'm aware that he has won three Super Bowls.  The last one was six years ago, and I don't recall that he did very well in his first two years in the league.  (Yup, just checked: 13-19 with the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and 1992.)  I'm not saying he's a bad coach--far from it.  But it's a little bit distasteful for Patriots fans to be complaining about the way the Jets talk about themselves when you can't hear a single Patriot ever say anything except that Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the galaxy.  What's the expression?  The pot calling the kettle black.

I LOVE the deadpan tone. He's the anti-Rex Ryan.

Peter King reported that the JETS suited up 11 DBs. No wonder NE wanted to run the ball.

He did not, REPEAT NOT, want to talk about the fake punt.

Must say the whole press conference had the tone of an evasive defendant before the police.

"Overall, the Jets did a good job."

-----

Its now time for you to refocus on Mike Tomlin and Katylied. I expect to see some good material here, pre game and post game. Don't let me down.

Has anyone seen Domiguy other than on yesterday's milk carton?

cloudboy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/17/2011 10:07:38 AM)

The JETS major acquisitions all paid dividends in the playoffs: Edwards, Cromartie, LT, and Holmes (for a 5th RD pick.)
