KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/13/2011 6:44:22 PM)

I would not mouth off to the Patriots.  They are so monotone, deadpan, saving all of the stuff for the game.  Meanwhile Bill is studying film and making note of every weakness.

John Fox to the Broncos
Pat Shurmur to the Browns
Cam Newton to the Draft

I still don't quite understand the John Fox situation.  He got fired from the worst team in the NFL - why would he have success with the Broncos?

Katy:

This one's for you. You can see the little smirk on his face if you watch closely:

Here's the transcript of the whole presser :

Pretty funny stuff.

I also do not understand the John Fox love, although he did have some good seasons with the Panthers.

Not every organization can spot the next Mike Tomlin.

Edwynn -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/13/2011 10:43:34 PM)

The Panthers owner, Jerry Richardson, is head of the owners side of the collective bargaining committee and is known to be taking a hard line stance in the negotiations. He made it plain by his actions last off season that he had bigger fish to fry than trying to win this year. He had the GM cut payroll as much as possible, which was accomplished by releasing 3 starters on defense and 4 starters on offense, then lost another starter on each side to preseason injuries, so that left 7 De. and 6 Of. starters from last year. They had no viable QB the whole season, two rookie receivers along with the rookie QB for most games + right side of O line played by back-ups + starting running back playing hurt for 6 games before going IR = lowest scoring team in the league.

The youngest team in the league, the lowest payroll in the league, 15 players gone to IR, 8 of them starters, and the team puppy got sick. (OK, I made that last one up)

The players knowing that the owner eviscerated the team and making it plain that the coach was essentially fired but finishing out his contract might have had some deflating affect on them. To me it's amazing the players played as hard as they did right through the last game, and that speaks to the coach.

If we omit the owner-sabotaged 2010 season coach Fox's record would be 71-57 regular season, 5-3 in the playoffs including a SB loss to the Pats because normally super reliable John Kasay missed a not difficult 40 yd. FG.

The Broncos will be OK.

Edit to the above:

Somehow my first paragraph got wiped out but what I started the post with was,

Coach Fox did not get fired for going 2-14, he was effectively fired at the end of the prior season when his contract was not renewed.

After management's non-extension and then gutting the team, the panthers understandably were the worst team in the league the ensuing season.

Good coaches are harder to find than franchise QBs.

Since my divorce, I pretty much watch the GA/Ga Tech game and the Super Bowl only, but today my son is 23 and I really hope the Falcons give him a win for his birthday!

servantforuse -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/15/2011 9:39:54 AM)

DIdnt think the Steelers were gonna do it, but the second half was a joy
Gooooooo Steelers

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/15/2011 5:19:53 PM)

Thank goodness for the second half.  Ravens imploded, it was awkward.  Steelers live to see the AFC championship game.  I love NFL playoff football.  really.

Lucylastic -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/15/2011 5:21:52 PM)

IM a total beginner when it comes to so much of the game, but I certainly am enjoying it:)

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/15/2011 6:55:47 PM)

Congrats, Katy !! I didn't see much of the game. 1st and 4th qtr due to unforseen circumstances[:@] I was pretty sure Steelers were going to win that one. And thanks for " getting them back " for us for their thrashing of us. LOL. They were talking about all the penalties on sports radio here. They didn't say how much for the Ravens, but STeelers got 100 yds in penalties. And they said some of them were very bad calls

Ohh, I am soo anxious about tomorrows game. But I can't wait. I sure hope we get to play you guys for the AFCCG.
I think if we win tomorrow and we are facing you guys, the " talk " out of both camps will be close to zero.

And a condolence to VioletGray. It's so deflating as a fan to come so close.
