Right, he's a Super Bowl champion, you wouldn't think they would ever give him up. Or at least, not this quickly.

Maybe Seattle could land him?

Or wait... maybe they will land Holmgren?

Highly unlikely, Sanity.

As long as Shanahan doesn't coach for the next 3 years, Denver is going to be paying him almost 7 million dollars each year. Somehow I don't see any teams offering him that much cash to be their offensive coordinator. If Shanahan coaches at all over the next few years, it's going to be with total control like what Holmgren got when he went to Seattle and what Gruden has in TB. And remember, the chickens have newly installed Jim Mora jr. to run the show.

Me neither.  I'm a Browns fan and have had little to celbrate.  Everyone knew we would have a coaching change but I thought Shanahan was popular in Denver

Not very.  The Broncos have always been a very strong team that just didn't quite "have it".  They won two Super Bowls with Elway and Terrell Davis, and then Elway retired and they have won a single playoff game since.

The roster is good.  They just don't play to their potential.  It's the coaching.

And Shanahan is not very popular here.  Elway is, and Cutler's getting there.  But Shanahan - no.

I don't know about the roster, aren't they plagued with injuries?  Seems Shanahan didn't do a horrid job in that regard, he didn't have much to work with.  But holding the division lead and squandering it away is probably what led to his job loss.   I'm sure he'll take the millions he's owed and laugh all the way to the bank.
The Elway heyday is long over in Denver.
The way Jay Cutler talks to the media, I expect plenty of soundbites from him regarding this situation.
At least with Cutler the Broncos have a budding QB to work with.

Management fired him because he wouldn't get rid of some staff..otherwise he would still be the coach.....loyalty you don't see very often any more

Okay, so it's the management skills (or lack) that got him in trouble, not necessarily his coaching skills.  It will be interesting to see where he lands or if he will consider retirement.  Cowher, it is reported, is not interested in the Jets job.  And there continues to be speculation that Wade Phillips probably will not keep his job.  Other question marks:  Haslett, Edwards.  Am I missing anyone else?  Is Gruden safe from firing?

I can't be TOO surprised by the idea of letting Shanahan go and giving someone else a try.  That defense has sucked for years, and it's not necessarily a convincing excuse to say that the personnel isn't very good.  Who's responsible for personnel in Denver?

With Cowher out of the picture, I'm not too optimistic that the Jets are going to find anyone better than Mangini.  The first thing they should have done is look for a new QUARTERBACK, not a head coach.  Yeah, Mangini made some funny fourth-down calls in the last quarter of the season, but I'm sure he felt pressure from all of Favre's interceptions.  "Oh no, fourth down again, we HAVE to get something here because our QB may lose the ball for us next time!"

Favre needes to retire.  The Jets should've kept Pennington.  Maybe you can grab Cassel from the Pats.  Leftwich will probably be on the market.  The Jets need to move forward and I agree that the QB is the most pressing issue for them.  I hope they see that, Favre is not their future.  He's not anyone's football future.

My congrats to the Cardinals on their win.  And to the Falcons for overcoming the badness and having a wonderful season and a future full of promise.

Did you see the new expert on NBC is Mat Millen; the most incompentent GM the game has seen.  Look at the Lions as proof.  Since the US is awarding failure and incompetence, why not I guess.

NFL countdown just did a pretty good piece talking about how Parcells turned around Miami, and Keyshawn even commented about how he gets the attention of players and they don't even think about fooling around.

It's funny to consider the success he's had everywhere . . . except Dallas. I mean, he got the Patriots to the Super Bowl, won it with the Giants twice, and even got the Jets to the AFC Championship game, yet only got the Cowboys to the playoffs twice in 4 years and didn't win either of them. Makes me wonder if Jerry Jones was getting in the way.

ESPN is reporting that the Pats will slap the franchise tag on Cassel.

The Cowboys team that he inherited wasn't very good, and he left it well-stocked with talent.  I wouldn't consider his tenure in Dallas a failure.  The Wade Phillips era--now THAT is starting to look like a failure.

But one of many things that irk me about Parcells is that he never stays around long enough to show anyone how far he can really take a team.  Brought the Patriots to the Super Bowl, lost it, and ... gone.  Brought the Jets to the AFC Championship Games, lost it, and ... gone.

Slapping the franchise tag on Cassel tells me they plan to trade him instead of letting a player of his caliber--they developed--walk away as a FA and possibly sign with a division rival like the Jets, who are going to be shopping for a QB.

To tenure him for one year under the franchise tag will cost the Pats 12-14 million. So...locked up with T.Brady's contract, that would mean the Pats would be investing in the neighborhood of 28 million on two players--per year--who play the same position.

Even with the uncertainty surrounding Brady's rehab, I really doubt the Pat's front office will want to keep both players based on the above scenario.

Millen is an entertaining commentator, and it looks like you don't know he is just back doing the same job he had before the Lions hired him. And since he's got 4 Super Bowl rings from 3 different teams, he's plenty qualified for the job of being an expert analyst.

Millen can enunciate.  That already puts him a few steps above some of the other ex-players attempting to be commentators.  Some of them are annoying and difficult to understand.
