Bring on Cowher....

quote:

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti shot down rumors that he has interviewed Bill Cowher for the team's head coaching job.

"I have never met Bill Cowher," Bisciotti said Monday at a news conference. "If I shook his hand one time five years ago at an NFL meeting, I don't remember it. But I did not look for candidates."

The Ravens need a replacement for Brian Billick, who was fired Monday after nine seasons as head coach -- and just one day after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in Baltimore's final game of the season.

Cowher resigned as the Steelers' coach before the 2007 season and is working as a CBS studio analyst on game days, so he is available.

Bisciotti said he would not identify Cowher or anybody else as a potential candidate without first seeking guidance from general manager Ozzie Newsome and the rest of his football advisors.

"I have not spent one minute thinking about Brian's replacement," Bisciotti said. "That's not something that I'm qualified to do without Ozzie's lead, so that process starts now."

I don't know if he'll come back, Katy. I wonder if Fox will survive at Carolina?

Trust me Cowher will coach.  It's about the money.  Some one will make him an offer he can't refuse.

since Bisciotti took over full ownership in 2004, Baltimore was 33-33. That included two losing seasons and only one playoff appearance, a one-and-out performance in 2006.
and
Billick had three years left on a contract that pays $5 million per season. Bisciotti determined a few weeks ago that he would give Billick a chance to right things in 2008, but changed his mind after talking with Cass, Newsome and other NFL owners.

And so the annual coaching carousel begins. I thought Billick being canned was a certainty. Next few predictions:

Either Andy Reid will leave the Eagles or the Eagles will drop him both for the good of all involved

Unsure if the Raiders will stick with Kiffin, but I think they will.

I believe the 49ers, Bears, Jets, and Panthers will give one more year grace to their coaches.

Dolphin coaching status is completely unpredictable yet.

Should the Dolphins use the #1 pick, or trade it?

List of previous #1s: http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/alltimeno1

Who are you going to end up with? Get lucky, and you may have a Bruce Smith, Earl Campbell, or Peyton Manning.

Maybe an Irving Fryar, George Rogers, or Too Tall Jones, in other words, a solid pro.

Or you may take the next Ki-Jana Carter, John Matuszak, or Tim Couch

Yeah, I agree that it's probably time for Andy Reid to go, but I'll tell you, over the last 2-3 weeks the Eagles have become a pretty good football team.  There are some teams in the NFC that are glad the Eagles aren't going to be in the playoffs.

The NFC really sucks.  The top four AFC teams would all win the NFC this year.  Cowboys vs. Chargers?  Ouch.  That'd be a rout the way those two teams are playing right now, and the Chargers are probably the fourth-best team in the AFC.

Interesting.  There are a lot of really good players on that list.  It's a noticeably better list than the all-time No. 2's (http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/alltimeno2).  And some of the busts at No. 1 were widely criticized even at the time (like Tim Couch and Courtney Brown).  I kinda think Alex Smith is going to turn into a bust too.

I heard this morning that Parcells and Cameron will meet this week, but I don't know what'll happen.

Smith with the Bears and Mangini with the Jets are fine, Fox in Carolina.... hmmmm. He might be out, if Cowher wants the job. Nolan in SF may be out, they were extremely underwhelming this year.

Agreed on Smith, Lam, he looked horrible this year.

And there is always the chance you'll get a stud that gets cut short by injury, like Bo Jackson, or Billy Sims.

Yeah, you certainly can't argue with picking Billy Sims, and he was great for a while.

There was some doubt about Jackson because it was known even then that he was interested in baseball, and the Buccaneers ended up with nothing because when he finally did come back to football, it was with the Raiders, who had re-drafted him.

Reid's not going anywhere, unless another family situation comes up that forces the situation from his perspective.

Fox's job is fine too. I'd be shocked if Cowher came back next year, I think he's loving 'civilian' life. If you saw his last year in Pitt, his heart clearly wasn't in it, and the team suffered a little for it.

I don't know if the Dolphins could trade down even if they wanted to. It's incredibly difficult to trade out of the number one pick. It's a bad idea, anyway - the only situation where you should try trading down is when, say, your top five players all have the same grade, so maybe you could move down to the fifth spot, get extra picks, and get an impact player. But you NEVER trade down if you feel you're going to be getting a lower graded player.

Maybe Jimmy Johnson can be pulled out of the Fox booth!  'Course I dunno how he and the Tuna get along.

But this year IS one of those years, where you have a bunch of guys of comparable talent to choose from, IMO. The one guy who is the most clear-cut #1 is McFadden, and that's one spot Miami is okay at, if Ronnie Brown is going to be okay, which everyone thinks he will be.

Now THAT is someone happy where they are ; I'd love to see him coach again, though.

I think Matt Millen would be an excellent choice to head up the front office there.  I know that the Lions would just *hate* to lose him but in this competitive environment I don't see how he could resist.

...No, on second thought... That might make the Lions counter-offer and *gulp* extend his contract and give him more money. ...never mind.

Don't worry, he said that he's going to use all 7 draft picks in '08 on wide recievers......

Better that, I guess, than using them all on 7 overrated quarterbacks who will succeed in leading the team into sub-mediocrity.

Come, come: the Browns being out of the playoffs is just an expression of nature, kind of like water freezing when it gets cold.........
