I was rooting hard for the Browns. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Joe Thomas should be rookie of the year. He's made a huge impact on that team and should be an elite player for years to come.

btw, can we talk about how pathetic the Falcons are for a second? They would've been guaranteed the second overall pick if they'd lost on sunday, but in beating the Seahawks' backups (way to go, dicks) they're now gonna have to flip a coin with the Raiders and Chiefs (3-sided coin?) for third, fourth or fifth place. it's sorta symbolic of the franchise's patheticness.

Brian Billick never came close to duplicating the success he enjoyed early in his career as head coach of the Baltimore and it finally cost him his job.

I have mixed emotions about Billick's dismissal. Overall, he is a good coach, and I'm not sure who else would have won this year with a broken down Steve McNair who lost seven fumbles, while being otherwise ineffective. Kyle Boller, the back up, has heart, but he's not a #1 QB. So, combine the hole at QB with a slew of injuries across the board and a difficult first place schedule --- and the team was going to lose.

The upside for Baltimore is that TROY SMITH has looked good, a kind of cross between Doug Flutie (pocket awarenss / mobility) and Jeff Blake (small but strong armed.) If Smith starts next year and posts an .80 rating with about 500 yards in rushing, Baltimore could be back in the playoffs. Things would have to fall into place, getting help in the draft and healthy years from Trevor Pryce, Todd Heap, Chris McAllister, and Samari Rolle. The team will also benefit from a loser's schedule in 2008.

I think they might try to get Jason Garrett as their next coach.

They have a pretty crappy passing game in Baltimore, and I don't think that team will be good for a while.  It's not just at QB, either.  The WR's are really mediocre.  And that defense just keeps getting older.  Eventually it's going to burst.

When a regime can't fix a certain obvious problem year after year, you can't blame the owner for finally deep-sixing them.  QB and WR have been serious holes in Baltimore for years.  Really, who was the last great Ravens' wideout?  What good QB have they EVER had?  The best one was probably Trent Dilfer.  The same goes for the WR position under Andy Reid.  (And, come to think of it, the Eagles have never really had a great TE under Reid either.)  EVENTUALLY, you have to draft some guys who can do the job--or else you lose your own.

Well, what BALTO has done over the years is play to its strengths: defense, field position, time of possession, and good special teams. The best QB the team ever had was Testaverde back in the pre defense years. He made the pro bowl in 97 and was a up among the league leaders in YDS and TDs. But your point is valid.

In Baltimore, the coach does not make the personnel decisions, so Billick is kind of being scapegoated for an overall organizational failure. Still, the team willl continue to draft well (great track record) and be smart in free agency and cap managment (good track record here too.) I would not underestimate the Ravens, but clearly there's a downward arc in place.

As for receivers, Derrick Mason was arguably the best 3rd down receiver in the league this year and might be the top possession receiver as well. Over the past three years, he has more catches than all but two or three other receivers. He goes unnoticed b/c he can't really stretch the field anymore, but he always gets open and he always catches the ball.

All in all though, BALTO is not a team on the rise, but its better than its record might indicate.

He had 103 catches this year, which is nice, but I really don't consider him an elite receiver anymore.  As possession receivers go, he's not in the same class as T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Wes Welker had more of an impact this year too.  But anyway, Mason's future is pretty much the same as Baltimore's: like the rest of the team, he's getting old now too, and is only going to start deteriorating.

As for QB's, I meant during the Billick regime.  Billick came to the Ravens in 1999.  Whether to blame Billick for all their failures at QB or Ozzie Newsome is anyone's guess (you might as well fire both of them), but Len Pasquarelli has some scathing comments about Billick and his judgment of QB's:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=3175189

Anyway, as I said, the main problem with the Ravens is that their roster sucks and is only going to get worse.  It's not that they have a Super-Bowl-caliber team and Billick just isn't leading them there, as the owner declared.

The roster doesn't "suck" as badly as you think, as the OL is young, the DTs are elite, the LBs are elite, and the FS is all pro and in his prime.

As many pundits correctly point out --- in the salary cap era -- the margin between winning and losing is small. The key to success is roster management, and BAL has not grossly mismanaged its roster. Ogden will probably retire, Ray Lewis' contract is up next year --- that will create cap space and new opp'ts. (As a small example.)

Although you may like T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Wes Welker over Mason, Mason's gotten it done with QB's posting some pretty sad QB ratings, while those other receivers have an All Pro getting them the ball. (Food for thought.) I don't know if either of those guys would have posted Mason's numbers in BALTO, where secondaries would not have to contend with either Randy Moss or Chad Johnson on the other side of the ball.

Although everyone may castigate Billick for not developing a QB, no QB has ever left Billick and lit it up elsewhere until Derek Anderson went to CLE. Curiously, though, CLE didn't even view him as the starter going into this season.

Anyway, its done now.

I would not have fired Billick. Now I'm worried about the team turning into the WAS Redskins, although in that respect I'm probably just being paranoid.

DEN didn't haul off and fire Shanahan and CHI did not haul off and fire Lovie Smith.

As for the QBs, they are in such short supply that the league is filled with have's and have nots.

Haves: NE, SEA, PITT, CLE, CIN, IND, NYG, PHI, GB, AND NO.

The sorta-haves: JAX, TENN, DEN, WAS, CAR, OAK, AZ, TB.

Have nots: BAL, KC, DET, CHI, ATL, MIA, NYJ, MINN, SF.

TEAMS who fell off the map because the #1 QB went down: STL, ATL, & CAR.

The Reason the team cut Anderson is that it had committed to keeping Kordell Stewart as the third string QB.

Needless to say, this move proved short-sighted.

Good God - 161 pages!

It seems the only think you Uh'mercans obsess over more than Presidential elections, is Football. (And it isn't even played with the feet - what's that about?!)

Actually to some of us, pro football is much more compelling than politics.

OK.  We'll see how they do next year.  They'll have the benefit of a last-place schedule, but I guarantee they will not have a winning season.  While I'm at it, I'll guarantee that the defense won't be as good as it was in 2007.  We can revisit this in a year and see who was right.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Jeff Ireland has rejoined Bill Parcells to help revive the Miami Dolphins
Ireland, who spent the past seven years in player personnel with the Dallas Cowboys, was hired Wednesday as Dolphins general manager. He replaces Randy Mueller, fired Monday after three seasons with Miami.

The emergence of Ireland as the leading candidate for the job was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

NEW YORK (AP) - Adrian Peterson is impressed.
Not so much by his achievements as he ran away with The Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year voting the same way he surged past opposing tacklers this season. What has gotten the attention of the Minnesota Vikings running back is who he joins as winners of the award.

"It's a great honor to join a list with names like those," Peterson said Wednesday when told that Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith, Eric Dickerson and Billy Sims also won the award. "They are guys that I looked up to growing up. It's a goal that I set before the year started, to win rookie of the year, so it feels great to accomplish that."

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Coach Mike Nolan will return to the San Francisco 49ers next season despite going 16-32 in his first three years with the club.
Owner John York promoted top personnel executive Scot McCloughan to general manager Wednesday, giving him a raise and final say on personnel issues. But other than the new title for McCloughan, the 49ers changed almost nothing significant in their power structure at the close of their franchise-record fifth straight losing season.

Nolan, who previously had total control of football operations, and McCloughan said they will continue to make joint decisions on every issue for the 49ers (5-11). San Francisco lost 20-7 at Cleveland last Sunday to complete an embarrassing run of losing for a franchise with five Super Bowl trophies.

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Lions reportedly fired Mike Martz on Wednesday, ending his fractious two years as the team's offensive coordinator.
Martz will be replaced by Jim Colletto, who will retain his position as offensive line coach while calling plays. Receivers coach Kippy Brown will serve as co-coordinator, the Detroit Free Press reported.

A message seeking comment was left Wednesday with Martz's agent, Bob LaMonte. The Lions had no comment on the reports, a team spokesman said.

The Ravens' search committee engaged in an all-day meeting yesterday to discuss potential coaching candidates.

While team officials aren't about to mention possible successors to Brian Billick, they do have one prediction.

"I think that any potential head coach that looks at Ozzie Newsome's history of drafting Pro Bowl players and sees the Pro Bowlers [already on the team] ... will put us on top of their list," said owner Steve Bisciotti, who will meet with the search committee again this morning.

PITTSBURGH — The good news for Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor: The forecast for Saturday night’s wild-card game against the Steelers calls for a low of 38 degrees and only a 20 percent chance of rain or snow.

The bad news: The game is being played at Heinz Field.

“That field is terrible,” Taylor said. “That is a lawsuit pending. That’s ridiculous. You’re up there where it rains a lot, it snows. Maybe they should try investing in FieldTurf next year.”

Haha, true. Not to mention the Michael Vick crap. Did they ever get back the 17milllion or whatever he owes them?

Go Steelers in playoffs. They need some luck if they're going to be the Jags.

Think Anderson from the browns secured his job? I do.

It can go either way, which makes the argument interesting.

Now I'm wondering if either SD or IND has enough game to take out NE.

PITT looks like injuries have taken too heavy a toll for them to advance.

The weather for Saturday night in Pittsburgh is in the 40's with rain.  That should make it easier for the Jags, I was hoping we'd have some horrid snowstorm, doesn't look like that's going to happen.  I know the Jags despise Heinz  Field conditions, so the rain may make it sort of nasty.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Unlike his boss, Bill Parcells didn't need to go to Costa Rica. He stayed right at home and decided Cam Cameron had to go, along with just about everyone else on the Miami Dolphins
A year ago Thursday, Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga embarked on a two-week coaching search that took him as far as Central America to interview at least a dozen candidates.

Now the Dolphins are starting over.

Cameron was fired Thursday after winning only one game in his first year as an NFL head coach. The move means Miami will have its fifth coach in five seasons.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Tony Elliott, the New Orleans Saints nose tackle in the 1980s who was later paralyzed in a shooting, died at his home. He was 48

health care aide found Elliott dead in his bed Monday, brother Carl Elliott said. Morton's Mortuary confirmed the death Thursday.

Carl Elliott told the Connecticut Post his brother was restricted to a wheelchair and had congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The tape of the Steelers' only home loss this season is being looped constantly in their meeting rooms, the players' lounge, the team offices. It's all Jaguars all the time as the Steelers prepare for Saturday night's rematch in the AFC playoffs, and Roethlisberger has seen enough.Flipping the channel doesn't help. No matter what TV he turns on, Roethlisberger keeps seeing Fred Taylor's decisive TD run in the final two minutes and his 147 yards rushing. David Garrard's three TD passes. The sacks. Maurice Jones-Drew's 69 yards rushing."It's annoying, honestly," Roethlisberger said Wednesday. "You get tired. You want to watch SportsCenter or see something else, CNN, I don't know, something. The Cooking Channel, something."
