BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- American soldiers discovered a girls school being built north of Baghdad had become an explosives-rigged "death trap," the U.S. military said Thursday.

The plot at the Huda Girls' school in Tarmiya was a "sophisticated and premeditated attempt to inflict massive casualties on our most innocent victims," military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said.

The military suspects the plot was the work of al Qaeda, because of its nature and sophistication, Caldwell said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

The plot was uncovered Saturday, when troopers in the Salaheddin province found detonating wire across the street from the school. They picked up the wire and followed its trail, which led to the school. Once inside, they found an explosive-filled propane tank buried beneath the floor. There were artillery shells built into the ceiling and floor, and another propane tank was found, the military said.

The wire was concealed with mortar and concrete, and the propane tanks had been covered with brick and hidden underneath the floor, according to a military statement. Soldiers were able to clear the building.

"It was truly just an incredibly ugly, dirty kind of vicious killing that would have gone on here," Caldwell said.

Iraqi contractors were responsible for building the school, which was intended to bring in hundreds of girls.

"Given the care and work put into emplacing this IED, it is likely it had been planned for a long time" and it is thought that "the IED was not intended to be set off until the building was occupied," the military said.

Authorities intend to question the Iraqis involved in the school's construction.

Okay...now anti-war or not or whatever (i'm in the whatever category), you cannot read this and say whoever planned and tried to carry this out dosent need to die. It's a bit more than fucked up. The sad part is that though this bomb plot was uncovered there will likely be a few more that will succeed.

That is horrifying!  So glad that the soldiers found this before the school was occupied.  [&:]

And some people want the suspected al qeada "detainees" in GTMO set free.
The term "cognitive dissonence" keeps comming up.

"Of course they blew up a girl's school, they were treated like ANIMALS in GTMO for 6 years!"
"They have to "channel their anger" somehow, they're,....they're, HUMAN BEINGS for God's sake!"
"The dead girls parents can always have more children!"

Eh, what are you going to do?  The Qur'an tells us women are inferior to men, and i quote:

Tabari I:280 "Allah said, ‘It is My obligation to make Eve bleed once every month as she made this tree bleed. I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent.' Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid."

or this little gem...

Bukhari:V3 B48 N826 "The Prophet said, ‘Isn't the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?' The women said, ‘Yes.' He said, ‘This is because of the deficiency of a woman's mind.'"

...lovely religion... >.>  No wonder they don't care about a girls' school.

Wonder how long 'til that "gender equality clause" in the Iraqi constitution disappears.

They hate and fear women so much over there I am not shocked. Killing little girls probably makes them dance for joy. It would be interesting if for some reason they suddenly couldn't have any more female children and  had only boys, then they could marry as many camels as they see fit.

It would not surprise me if our government did this themselves to illustrate how "evil" the other side is. After Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman, and finding no WMD, I cannot believe a damn thing that our military says anymore (oops, almost forgot abu ghraib)

There ya go...

A classic example of "Blame America First!"

BTW... as far as Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch goes...

From Viet Nam past to the Civil War, in wars that were covered as media evends and people read daily, then read and listened and finally watched  accounts of each action, where heroes recieved medals and citations for their glorious death at the hands of the enemy or for their heroic deeds in action on the field there have been Pat Tillmans and Jessica Lynchs, scores and scores except for one thing...

Nobody ever found out, or if they did, it was never reveled and covered up.

So I am a little tired of the left's "appalled" reaction to them now.

I am sure julia you would support of every medal and citation for the last 150 years to weed out the ones that don't belong.

Because, you know, there sure hasn't been any evidence that the Iraqis seem to have no qualms whatsoever about blowing each other up, and you'd think that a government who would so easily frame up a bunch of innocent terrorists could at least manage to "find" a few cases of planted WMD to take the heat off.

But apart from that, your reasoning there is just impeccable.

I did not say that the government DID do this, I just believe nothing that I read and half of what I personally see when it comes to the government and the things they have told us over the years that turned out to be nothing more than lies. But you know, you can believe blindly everything that comes out of the TV set, no skin off my nose.

I guess I could blame Canada for the war in Iraq having created a situation in which one cannot tell propaganda from reality.

Who on the left have you heard address this? Token so called "liberals" on Fox whose only role is to go on that network to look stupid so that whatever talking head "debating" them always "wins"?

I have no clue about what you are referencing in regard to the government nonconsensually using people as heroes in order to conduct a propaganda campaign against the American people, and this happening historically. It would not surprise me, as many countries lie to their people, use them against their will, and basically cannot be trusted. (I think our Founding Fathers stated this themselves if I am not mistaken, and I would wonder if they would toss up some unsupported argument that others have done something in the past to justify it being done today).

Actually I have never thought about it, nor do I care to, and I find it odd that you would come up with this in relation to being a watchdog on government corruption as it exists today, no matter who is responsible for it today.

Governments do bad things if their citizens do not question and blindly follow the flag.

And it wouldn't surprise me if you were mentally incompetent.  I'm not saying you ARE, just that it wouldn't surprise me.

See how that works?  It's a cute little rhetorical trick called "poisoning the well".  Look it up.  While you're there, check into "non sequitur".

It seems to me that you did not address the thrust of my post in the first place, which is that the government lies all the time, why should I believe them now?

Perhaps you may want to address that, if not, that is just fine by me. I do not believe everything that is reported in the media. If I wrongly characterized you in believing what you see on television, that is fine. I do not believe what I am told about the goings on in Iraq, too many reporters have left, and too many are dead. Perhaps it was incorrect for me to state that you believe what you see on television. I apologize.

I am just as appalled by people who consider themselves to be on the right that will gladly be willing to sacrifice their own ethics or even "the truth"  if it benefits "their" party or any notion that they feel is to be correct.

The reason I didn't address it is because it's a fallacy.  Specifically it's a fallacy called "poisoning the well".  It's not something you can debate.  It's a subjective opinion, which you're entitled to, but it isn't debatable because it isn't logical.

Suppose I say to you, "I don't believe in the theory of evolution."

You ask, "Why?"

And I answer you, "Well, it's obvious -- because evolution is a scientific theory and scientists have been wrong about so many things in the past.  They were wrong about Piltdown Man, they were wrong about the coming Ice Age, they were wrong about the theory of the Ether.  They've been wrong about so many things, why should I believe them now?"

That's pretty much the line of argument you're pursuing here, whether you realize it or not.

quote:

I do not believe everything that is reported in the media.

Right, but obviously you believe *some* things that are reported in the media.  At the very least you believe Iraq is torn by strife or you wouldn't be all fired up about it.  How did you form that belief?  Have you been there?

It seems to me that you choose to believe what's agreeable to you (or what's at least consistent with your politics) and classify the rest as "lies".  Not a particularly noble way to think, IMO.

domiguy -> RE: Girls school found rigged in Iraq (5/6/2007 9:08:43 AM)

I would think that perhaps a more logical question would be whether the girls inhabiting this school were going to be Sunni  or Shia?  I think it is probably just as logical that the answer would lie there as to who would have an interest in building a bomb like this....Nothing was mentioned as to the identity of who was going to "go" to this school. I couldn't find it in any other stories about this incident...I can't be the only one who thinks that this scenario is probably more likely to fall in the lines of a continuing civil war than that of this being done by al Qaeda.  Could be wrong but I think the military would ahve an interest in blaming al Qaeda over the Sunni's or Shia's...It is a distinct possibility.

Or perhaps the soldiers stumbled upon the cache holding all of the WMD's ...maybe they should keep digging?...lol.

In a courtroom when a person is on trial and the defense attorney presents evidence that shows that a cop has perjured himself in criminal cases before, planted evidence, and such, this can be shown as evidence to support a contention that this source of information is indeed compromised and should not be believed.

Right, but obviously you believe *some* things that are reported in the media.  At the very least you believe Iraq is torn by strife or you wouldn't be all fired up about it.  How did you form that belief?  Have you been there?

Because the reports come from multiple sources.
