Well, I'll give it to you- PoF is hot!  Speaking of Ro, I read back up to see what was happening with Norrath last week.  Soltaris seems open.. what's that about?  The lore behind it?

PS-  Since I'm atheist, I swear in Karana's name still. ;)

Which of these are a better fit for me?
If "neither", does anyone know of a better game of this type?

Actually, going back to your orginial question..

MMORPG's are best played when they're young, while everyone's still getting their stake in the place.  Finding a new one is the most fun.  "Vanguard", a relatively new one, produced by some of the big names from EverQuest, should be one well worth the look.  (However, like EverQuest, I doubt it'll be quite as easy as WoW.  It's probably going to be easier than the orginial EQ, since they're trying to draw a fan base, but I sort of doubt they went that far.)

MadRabbit -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/29/2007 6:35:59 PM)

I have to say...I am a much happier person without Everquest in my life anymore.

I will probably never play another game of that calibur again since I cant justify devoting that kind of time. There is just way more important things I could be working towards then my characters next set of armor in Everquest. I couldnt really justify the time to devote to Final Fantasy 12.

With that said, I prefer my PlayStation 2. Much less time consuming and easier to walk away at a moments notice. And you just cant beat the titties and gore in God of War 1 and 2. (Just make sure the violence doesnt turn you into a school shooter).

This is a reply to the original poster.

I played a MUD for years, and probably still have a character or 3 on it.  Most of my friends there quit that mud and went initially to Everquest, which they enjoyed, although the real technically proficient gamers went with World Of Warcraft.

I realized I was spending too many hours of my day staring at a computer screen, and not enough hours of my day being involved in Real Life, so I logged off and went dancing and working instead.

Good luck whichever one you go with, but my experience is that online games suck your life away playing with digital people.  It is no longer for me.

Which one should I sign up for?
I prefer easier rather than more difficult games.
I prefer not to spend oodles of time farming for gold or equipment.
I enjoy the fantasy roleplay aspects over the technical aspects of a game.
I prefer that a game allows me to pause in some way, without my coming back to find my character has been killed while I was AFK.

Which of these are a better fit for me?

kentaro1980 -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/29/2007 6:59:53 PM)

(I am playing Everquest since 4 years now and in a raiding guild that's in the top 20 serverwide. My opinions may be a bit biased)
In my opinion...neither.

every MMORPG is based around the ultimate goal of keeping you playing and playing and playing (and thus paying). I will go through each point you adressed.

I prefer easier rather than more difficult games.
No game available now is rocket science. Play the tutorials, resist the temptation to get powerleveled and you will have no problems at all.

I prefer not to spend oodles of time farming for gold or equipment.
Every game currently out there is, as mentioned above, designed to keep you playing. Farming will be a part of it one away or another and in varying intensity (depending on your goals)

I enjoy the fantasy roleplay aspects over the technical aspects of a game.
Speaking as a high-end raider (those with no real life and all that)...there is no roleplaying after a certain point. it all boils down to stats, tactics and gear. Everquest has a server dedicated to roleplaying with certain rules that differ from the rest of the Everquest servers.
Also Everquest has a much more immersing world (even though the graphics suck) and is much more developed and thought out than any other game...Mostly due to the fact that Everquest has been around for 9 years now. Except maybe Ultima Online. I don't know about the roleplaying in other games, but both WoW and EQ do not really leave room for that later on in the game.

I prefer that a game allows me to pause in some way, without my coming back to find my character has been killed while I was AFK.
I think just about every game offers that, either by moving to a safe spot where no monsters roam to or by teleporting to the nearest city which is protected by guards (non-player characters). However, as before..the world keeps turning, so that rare monster you were after may have been killed while you are AFK. A "real" pause mode is only available in single player games. (Oblivion, for example...which is a very good game)

I hope that helped :)

scifisub42 -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/29/2007 7:05:44 PM)

well, if you want roleplay interaction, there is also SecondLife,  which isn't exactly a game, unless you want it to be...   I have a spellfire Hud for gaming in SL, but mostly I enjoy exploring and meeting people...    Oh yeah, you can fly in many areas.. and you can change your avatar around a LOT>>>>

There is a reason that Lineage has many millions of subscribers, compared to the hundreds of thousands for the above mentioned games... it offers a popular array of features, for a reasonable monthly fee.

CuriousLord -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/30/2007 7:15:35 AM)

Just to point out, it's the other way around.  WoW's the most popular MMORPG, by a land slide.

Alumbrado -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/30/2007 7:28:14 AM)

Lineage comes in behind Wow...both have many millions of users, EQ is listed at half a million. Which of the other games mentioned have more users than the Lineage editions?

CuriousLord -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/30/2007 7:38:47 AM)

Not sure.  Yeah, EQ's long past its prime, not that it ever had so many as the bigger names today.  WoW's certainly the most popular, but can't help with numbers beyond that.

Alumbrado -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/30/2007 7:43:30 AM)

I'm only mildy interested in these games, but had a sub who exhausted way too many hours on them... Lineage seemed to offer a nice blend of socialization and whacking on stuff with magic pointy things. And the mutant pets are tres cool.

I have played both as well as others. Eq for about 5 years, and WoW now for about 2.

Similarities:
Both are massive time sinks as others have mentioned. While you can play it casually the design of the games, as with most all MMORPG's (massively multiplayer online role playing game) is for you become addicted like a crack fiend and spend every free minute playing.  There is a good sense of community on the games if you find a good guild to join. You can meet some very interesting people for sure.  Once you get that community feeling the gold and gear will come naturally as you have fun and it will not seem like farming at all. They both have different server types that you can build your characters on,.. role-play servers(RP), Player vs. Player(PvP), and Player vs. Everything(PvE). PVE in my opinion is the best choice,. you can do any of the other 2 types of gameplay at your discretion rather than being forced into one style of gameplay. You have to pay monthly to play either. THERE IS NO PAUSE BUTTON!! lol

Differences:
While EQ is more realistic graphic wise, WoW is more cartoonish. EQ has an immense learning curve while WoW is very simple.  Honestly EQ is old and past its prime,. also the system requirements to play EQ are much much higher (and even more so if we are talking EQ2) while WoW can run smoothly on a much older and lower equipped PC.

Bottom line:
If I had to recommend one to a new gamer I would say WoW, no question. If you have or want to have any type of RL social life then just forget either one, lol.  Maybe just wait a while until SPORE comes out and then give that one a try. (my prediction is that SPORE will totally dominate all other mmorpg's with ease) If you havent heard about SPORE yet go look up some of the gameplay demos on Youtube or Google,. its freakin amazing even in the very very early stages of development.

SweetlySubmissve -> RE: Everquest or World of Warcraft? (4/30/2007 10:12:30 AM)

My humble advice?

Turn away now.

It's bad when you have to resort to selling crack to children to support your World of Warcraft habit. (Okay - so that may be a slight lie, but still...)

I went from having a life to having none, thanks to my former roommates. While fun, most of the MMORPGs are a huge addiction and a complete time sucker-inner. (I could have used a better word, but that's my word of the day.)

But if going for one, I'd say WoW. It's fairly easy to play and completely captivating. Most players are helpful and friendly.

In fact, I'd still be playing if my computer wasn't made in 190-dirt.

Good luck!

p.s. - Warlocks are awesome.

I (sarah) use to be an EverCrack addict, I have also tried WOW.. I no longer play that though...that whole social life thing ya know. WOW is better, not to mention cheaper. EQ has expansions like every 6mo to a year or so that you HAVE to end up getting (at least they did the 4 years I played)  Neither can pause if you need to go afk.. your best bet for either is to be in "Safe" zones.

I prefer the phonic way. That way even non WoW-ers can enjoy Murloc-speak.
