I am not posting this in the Gorean forum because I want to get a more general response. I'm pretty sure I know what the Goreans would say. Here's the thing...I've never read any of the Gor books but I've always been curious. From what I have heard people say, it all sounds a bit too strange for me, but I wanted to give it a try before making too many judgements. Plus, I know a couple of people whom I am fond of and they like Gor, so I thought it couldn't be all bad, right? Well, I found a weblink to a full version of all the books of Gor and began reading the first one. I tried, really, but I couldn't make it beyond a few pages before I was bored. I heard from someone that the more interesting stuff comes later, so I started reading "Captive of Gor" but again I had to stop. This time it wasn't cause it was boring but just because it was horrible! The sentences were choppy and the language was repetitive. I felt like I was reading something written by a 3rd grader, which surprised me, because I know "John Norman" was a college professor. I appologize to all of those who love the books and live the Gorean lifestyle. I am sure there are some admirable qualities to be found somewhere, after all, I do know people who say they are Gorean and they seem to be good people. What I don't understand though, is how so many people have become enthralled by these books that I couldn't even bear to read. I'm sincerely asking and if anyone can tell me I would be appreciative. What is it about Gor that makes you like it? Were you able to read the books without cringing?

Yeah, they are not for Physics research, you can read some here and some there, alot of repitition and suffers from the flaws you mentioned, when you get thru a few sentences, you can sit and daydream about what the point is.... But the fundamentals that are woven throughout the book they resonate with alot of people, thru heritage, thru core values. laughter and lust----all kinda ways, there are some parts of the plots that are paperthin and even worse....but the point is not tarns and sleens, they are metaphors, and if you can hang out thru the droll and everyday painfully trite moments in the books (which is just like an everyday life, you will find a moment here and there of extraordinary pleasure and responsiveness) if you search hard enough you will start to accumulate many of these, and one day you wake up and there you are...............Ah, but what the fuck do I know? What is it about bdsm that makes you light up versus cringe? What is it about vampirism? Or judaism? Or furries? Or Browncoats? We find something and it lights us up inside, it resonates with something there and we create our world to incorporate into it.

Its down to the motivation to read it; if one is interested to read something then generally the skill of the writer becomes less important. Just look at some of Tolkien's stuff - we read it not because he is a fine writer on the level of Mark Twain or George Orwell for example, but because we find the scenario of Middle Earth an interesting one. On the merits of the writing itself, we would surely put it down - especially the Silmarillion which even as an interested party in my teens I could not bear for more than a few pages! E

I may not be the person to ask, as I am not fond of Gor and, although I have dear friends who are, I do not have an affinity for most of the "lifestyle" premises derived from said books. I've read perhaps 4 of the Gor books as my ex-husband, who was a voracious reader of anything and kept everything he read, had pretty much all of them. About the books he said "You don't have to read them all. Read two and you've essentially read them all." I am in agreement with him (and you). Of course this was 20 years ago. My attitude may have changed since then but I haven't been interested enough to pick them back up to see. Don't get me wrong, I'm a scifi and fantasy nut so they are in my prefered genre, but they don't sing to me at all.

Yes it boring WILLIAM dabbled in gor for a few years and gave it up.it seems too restrictive to try living in the modern day..of courses to each there own I would never try to persuade some one to give up some thing that I haven't tried myself...

Technically he's a crappy writer, using 50 words where 6 would suffice, though he will strike a proper chord now and then. Actually, some of his books are pretty interesting, as when Tarl fights the Kurii, but that's probably not what you're looking for, and even then you have to skim thorough a lot of drivel to get to the good parts. Learn to skim, DominaSmartass, to get to the meat of the matter.

I said it once and will say again.. The man got paid by the word! So the more words the bigger the pay check! LOL Honestly tho.. I remember those boks with a certin youthful fondness.It was one of the things I think helped me on to this roadwe call this lifestyle. I wholehartedly agree that the books are repeditve and thinly plotted. The dialog is SO stilted. I some times wonder if he wasnt trying, tounge in cheek ,to poke fun at the old E.Rice Burrows works about J.Carter and Mars, wraped around neichieian values. But I do know this. If you allow your mind to get past the drivil, there are true nuggets to be found.

A year or so ago, I tried too. I found a web site that outlined all the gorean principles and stuff, got way into for about 20 minutes and thought it was the most fascinating thing I ever read, then promptly forgot about it. I dunno.

i've been reading a very long time. i love to read. i think i do this thing called skimming? If i see something i dont like i just move past it... i even at times might skip a paragraph if i deem it uninteresting. Like i could care less about the scenery. i honestly didnt notice anything you've mentioned, but then i might of skimmed over those parts. Plus i generally jumped chapters to the parts that i liked. Which were mainly the parts where there were slaves and the wazzi about them. i found those enthralling. The rest i could of cared less about. On top of that, when i read, i dont really see the words. Its more or less a movie that goes on inside of my head. i dont sit there and analyze the movie, i enjoy it. And personally any movie that has a bunch of slaves in it (that isnt ALL about sex) is a damn good movie to me. Granted i havent read ALL the books and most likely only parts of two books (think i might of gotten to the end in one). We've a 3rd book, but i didnt see much about slavery in it so i have yet the interest to read it. LOL and i have NEVER read any of Tolkien's stuff cos i have no interest in middle earth = )

I spent some time when I first came into the BDSM community 2 years ago in their section of this message board. It's very common, even in their section that people express the books are a bit hard to read through. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised many in there that live human Gor here on earth agree the Sci Fi books leave a lot to be diesired as far as literary form. What the common belief was when I participated was people thought only the good points of the book were worth bithing into the real day to day world. Much of the book like killing slaves that displease you ect.. is pretty far fetched. It's mpre accepted like a history book, rather than a bible. Painful to read, but good reference material over all. suzanne
