Badly written science fiction with a few pages of genuinely raunchy, SM, stroke scene embedded.  It was porn you could hide in plain sight and your parents would never know.  Hardly the exclusive domain of John Norman, but he was prolific and devised a mythology to frame it.

If people choose to embrace that mythology, I respect their right to do so.  Hell, the books are better written than "Dianetics."

Haven't read any of them, but it's on my list - I gather they're popular with the SCA aficionado's.

I like SCA, but from reading about Gorean BDSM in this and other forums, it strikes me as being too restrictive - there are no switches in Gorean for example, as John Norman did not see fit to include any in his books, so if you lean that way, you're SOL - which seems a little silly to me. I'm into BDSM because there are fewer rules, the last thing I want to do is adopt an even more restrictive set.

I'm not about to give up my lesbian femdom fantasies... [8D]

I did run across a similar style "world", that at a glance appeared to be well written - didn't pick it up and can't remember the author, but the protagonist was a masochist who orgasmed from pain - I'll have to see if I can find it again.

Hello All,
I personally feel a Gorean Master's home is run very parallel to a Hetero Old Guard Master's home.
It's not as common to have a Gorean Master involved in much sensation play or playing in public over all IMO.

Their slaves are generally required to live in High Protocol more often IMO in 24/7 exchanges.
Other than that I don't see much difference.
Mostly I've heard whips are for punishment and they focus more on the sexual, and service orientation side of the M/s exchange.
They are more prone to be concerned with  their submissive being governed in postures and protocol than S&M play.
There are indeed Gorean Master into the Sceneing, but it's a little less common as a whole.
The same threads of a Master being able to control his own life and the lives of his slaves applies Gorean or Old Guard.
I personally respect the approach of both Groups.
I also personally think there are many under the title of Master that are not Masters.
I think the examples the ones that fall short of the honorable ways, leave the many who indeed are good and wise looking foolish due to others neglect.

Just to be clear, I've found the folks at the Gorean forum here to be very respectful, friendly and helpful when I posted a question there.  Their responses were generally well-thought out too, and likewise in their responses on the general forum.  My criticism was of the books themselves, and I am an English major, so I'm probably beyond hope there.  [&:]

The books appeal to me because of the action/adventure element
and because I am a sci-fi/fantasy geek.  Some of the philosophy
appeals, other aspects do not.

Have fun with whatever you read for inspiration and
naughty fantasies and future scenes!

I'm sincerely asking and if anyone can tell me I would be appreciative. What is it about Gor that makes you like it?  Were you able to read the books without cringing?

Peruse some of the threads there, I am sure they would (for the most part) welcome you, I have been pretty well recieved there even after the great gorean forum wars of ought four.....

Actually I have been reading some threads there recently and that's what prompted me (among other things) to attempt reading the books. Now that I've tried and failed, I will probably stay away from the Gor boards. They tend to make me angry but I know better than to argue with them in their own section.

Oh boy, not to open up a can of worms here, but "hetero old guard" ? I'm not sure I know what you mean there.

I'll second that. I was incredibly impressed by the Gorean thread I waded into. To a person, the posters were respectful, and I don't think there was a single snide comment. Plus they laughed at my jokes.
