Invocation of Freya: Beautiful Freya, your mysteries call to me. with your blessings I am filled with self knowledge and am part of the unending source of wisdom. Guide my thoughts and actions to be worthy of your protection. Freya was a beautiful Vanir Norse goddess of love, magic, and divination, who was called upon for help in matters of of love. Freya was the daughter of the god Njord, and the sister of Freyr. Her husband was the god Od (possibly Odin) and her hall Sessrumnir was where half the slain warriors went (the others went to Valhalla, the hall where Odin presided). Freya herself was loved by men, giants, and dwarves. By sleeping with four dwarves she acquired the Brisings necklace.Freya travels on a gold-bristled boar, Hildisvini, or a chariot pulled by two cats. The Vanir were the Norse nature and fertility gods who lived in Vanaheim, in Asgard. They were at war with the warrior Aesir gods until they reached a treaty and exchanged hostages. The Vanir sent to Asgard, where the Aesir lived, Njord, god of winds, sea, and fire, and his children Freya and Freyr, god of sun, rain, and patron of bountiful harvests. Although the hostage sent by the Aesir was not as valuable as the Vanir's offering, war did not break out again. Instead the Vanir were absorbed into the Aesir. ********************************************* Freya was sister to Freyr, and daughter of an older ocean God, Njord. Freya was a Goddess of love, fertility, sexuality, magick, wealth, the moon and luck. In our modern calendar, Friday is named for her. She was a popular and well-loved Goddess among the Nordic people. Though a love Goddess, she was still courageous on the battlefield. Freya was associated with fertility, but that role was taken up more strongly by Frigga. She ruled over all cats, and she rode in a chariot pulled by two huge cats, named Bygul and Trygul. In this and several of her other traits, she is closely related to the Egyptian Goddess, Bast. zSB(3,3) In the afterlife, half of the warriors whose souls came to Asgard came to her hall, Sessrumnir. Her other role in Asgard is to control the Valkyries, who were the female spirits of war, that collected the souls of the dead from the battle field and conveyed them to the halls of Asgard. As with most Norse Deities, she had a special magickal item that was named and unique in power to her. Her amber necklace was called Brisingamen, and was given to her by four Dwarves (who represent the 4 elements). The necklace made Freya invincible on the battlefield. http://www.angelfire.com/va/goddesses/frey.html http://wuzzle.org/cave/lovegods.html#freya http://www.goddessfreya.info/drawingsn.htm (great art!) http://www.hranajanto.com/goddessgallery/freya.html (The text is from a fantastic book I own.) http://www.goddessgift.com/goddess-myths/frigga-freya-goddesses.htm http://www.thaliatook.com/freyja.html http://www.abaxion.com/jbfrey.htm (A really fierce altar piece) http://www.geocities.com/ingwibergo/whos_freyja.html http://www.hrafnar.org/goddesses/freyja.html
