Very good read by a former Federal Prosecuter on the Vick case.

From Profootballtalk.com:
INSIGHTS FROM A FORMER FEDERAL PROSECUTOR
Since the federal prosecutors handling the Vick case won't be conducting many (or any) Poindexter-style press briefings, the closest thing we'll ever get to the thought processes of the federal prosecutors in this case will be via the insights of a former federal prosecutor.
Attorney Marc Garber of The Garber Law Firm, with offices in Atlanta and Marietta, Georgia, worked for eight years as a federal prosecutor in New Jersey and Nevada.  He agreed to provide on-the-record observations regarding the Vick case, based on Garber's experiences working up and trying federal criminal cases on behalf of the United States of America.
As an initial matter, Garber believes that the mere existence of an indictment is the product of extensive work by prosecutors to marshal evidence that puts Vick in the places where they allege that he was, doing the things he allegedly did.  That evidence, Garber believes, goes beyond the four unnamed cooperating witnesses mentioned in the indictment.
"If I had Vick's case," he said, "the testimony of four cooperators would be enough to prompt a search, but not an indictment.  To pull the trigger on an indictment, I'd need documentary evidence that corroborates what the cooperators said.
"I'd start with Vick's credit-card bills to see where he's buying things and when.  I'd check airline tickets or other evidence of travel to see when he was in Virginia.  I'd check cell phone information.  I'd check emails.  Whatever kind of documented communication or evidence of travel or location you can imagine, that's what I'd want.
"There's no way, if you're a federal prosecutor, you pull the trigger on this case without [extensive] documents that let you plot out a time-line -- in multiple colors on a huge board that sits in front of the jury as you bury Vick witness by witness and document by document -- putting him at the dog fights on his property."
It all makes a lot of sense.  As we've previously explained, the feds aren't in this case to win an indictment and then lose a trial.  They took on this fight because prosecutors believe that they have the proof to secure a conviction.
Interestingly, Garber thinks that the prosecution ultimately will focus less on the dog fighting and more on the gambling.
"This case is not so much about animal abuse, though that's the hook that gets the jury impassioned," Garber said.  "This case from the Justice Department's perspective is about an illegal-gambling ring which, though the NFL remains silent on this point, is why Vick should be staring at an instant suspension."

CLEVELAND (AP) - Browns center LeCharles Bentley was cleared by his surgeon to return to the playing field on Monday, another major step in his unexpected comeback from a career-threatening knee injury.
"I passed it," Bentley said excitedly on the phone from New York. "I'm good to go."

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers star safety Troy Polamalu signed a four-year contract extension Monday worth $30.19 million that makes him the highest-paid player in team history and one of the NFL's top-paid defensive backs.
The deal guarantees the Steelers will keep their most versatile defensive player through the 2011 season, when he will be 30, meaning Polamalu could negotiate another big-money contract before his NFL career ends.

Anad another nice bit of news:

LATROBE, Pa. — The Steelers announced they have signed their 2007 first-round draft pick, linebacker Lawrence Timmons, to a five-year deal. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

http://news.steelers.com/article/78409/

It's a novel concept these days to actually get drafted players signed before camp.

I am so glad that we are keeping Troy and rewarding him, I'd hate to see him wearing another team's colors.

Six years ago, Michael Vick came to Jerry Diffell's store in downtown Blacksburg for a press conference. With his No. 7 jerseys hanging on retail racks around him, Vick announced the start of his own clothing line, the proceeds of which would go to Virginia Tech.

It was a proud day for Diffell, who has owned and operated the Tech Bookstore since 1986 and who watched Vick's star rise during Tech's run to the national championship game in 1999.

Pride was not on the menu Tuesday, as Diffell sat at PK's, a sports bar in Blacksburg, for a business luncheon. "All the TVs, on CNN and ESPN, kept flashing Michael Vick," he said.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) - Lance Briggs is going to play and not sit. The Chicago Bears Pro Bowl linebacker agreed to a one-year, $7.2 million contract Wednesday as the team's franchise player.
The deal was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

Unhappy when he was initially given the tag, Briggs had threatened to sit out the season but reached an agreement one day before the Bears are to report to training camp.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Three-time Pro Bowl running back Priest Holmes will report to the Kansas City Chiefs' camp Saturday in a surprise development that comes 21 months after he was knocked out of football by a devastating hit.
The return of the team's career leading rusher adds an interesting twist to the situation surrounding Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson, who has vowed to hold out of camp until he gets a new contract.

Dieon Sanders goes on record. I guess he hasn't quite been able to put the crack pipe away. I guess once and idiot, always an idiot applys to Sanders.

"What a dog means to Vick might be a lot different than what he means to you or I. Hold on, don’t start shaking your head just yet. Listen to me.

Some people kiss their dogs on the mouth. Some people let their dogs eat from their plate. Some people dress their dogs in suits more expensive than mine, if you can believe that.

And some people enjoy proving they have the biggest, toughest dog on the street. You’re probably not going to believe this, but I bet Vick loves the dogs that were the biggest and the baddest. Maybe, he identified with them in some way"

Wow, those are some dumb comments by Sanders.
This has been a weird week.  I'm sort of deep into the multiple fiascos going on at the circus known as the Tour de France.  At the moment the controversy seems to be over whether Contador will start tomorrow in "yellow" or whether he has to earn it since Rasmussen will be a "did not show" for the race.  Blood doping, testosterone, and jersey drama!

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Michael Vick pleaded not guilty Thursday to federal dogfighting charges and was released without bond until a Nov. 26 trial. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback then apologized to his mother and asked that judgment be withheld.
Vick was jeered by a crowd as he went into court. He and three others entered their pleas in U.S. District Court to conspiracy charges involving competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines. Federal prosecutors say the operation — known as Bad Newz Kennels — was run on Vick's property in Surry County.

"I take these charges very seriously and look forward to clearing my good name," Vick said in a statement read outside court by Billy Martin, his lawyer.

NEW YORK (AP) - Curtis Martin hopes to run straight from the backfield to the front office.
After retiring from the New York Jets on Thursday as the No. 4 rusher in league history, the 34-year-old Martin revealed he has his sights set on becoming an NFL owner.

"Ever since you have seen me as a player, I've been looking at myself as an owner," Martin said at a small, 45-minute news conference at the team's Manhattan offices, one of several stops on a whirlwind media tour.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid pleaded guilty to drug and traffic offenses on Thursday and will serve at least three days in jail, while another son opted to go to trial on drug and weapons charges.
Garrett Reid, 24, of Villanova, pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering another motorist, driving while under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and minor traffic offenses.

More Ron Mexico -  It was pretty much a given that Michael Vick was going to plead not guilty during Thursday's arraignment. But there were a few developments that weren't quite so clear cut.

Fortunately, FOXSports.com legal analyst Rob Becker was on hand to sort through it all for us.

CELEBRATION, Fla. - Simeon Rice's run with Tampa Bay as one of the NFL's most prolific pass rushers is over. The Buccaneers released the 12th-year pro, whose 121 career sacks rank second among active players behind Michael Strahan, on Thursday night, only hours after signing his replacement — first-round draft pick Gaines Adams — to a six-year, $46 million contract.

General manager Bruce Allen said Rice, who missed much of last season with a shoulder injury, failed a physical when he reported to camp earlier in the day.

For those who did not follow Level's links regarding Vick, this is some important info from the article:

One of the restrictions the judge did place on Vick was that he is not allowed to travel outside of his federal district. What implications, if any, does this have on his ability to resume his NFL career this season? The judge's travel restriction places 49 states off limits to Michael Vick. This means that even in the unlikely event that NFL commissioner Goodell's investigation ends with a reinstatement of Vick to his team, he simply could not function as the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons.
The end!

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan failed to report to the New York Giants training camp on Friday, and he is mulling retirement, his agent told the team. "He is not here," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said after Strahan failed to report with veterans and rookies to the University at Albany. "Last night I talked to his agent (Tony Agnone) and his agent said to me at seven o'clock last night that he is contemplating retirement. That's all I know right now."

Nike suspended its lucrative contract with Michael Vick on Friday, while Reebok took the unprecedented step of stopping sales of his No. 7 jersey.
Facing protests from animal-rights groups, Nike announced it was suspending Vick's endorsement deal without pay, as well as halting sales of Vick-related shoes and other products at its retail stores.

With camps being set up around the country, it's a fine time to salute Los Angeles ... now celebrating 13 years without the NFL.
Well, not exactly everyone is celebrating. Quite a few L.A.-area citizens have been missing alfresco professional football since the Raiders and Rams bartered their way out of Southern California more than a dozen years ago.

But while L.A. loves the NFL a lot more than outside knuckleheads want to believe, very few tax-paying locals are eager to cough up public loot to make it return. And that's where the salute comes in. With more than $16 billion in public money surrendered to the construction of American sporting venues over the past 15 years, L.A. has contributed relatively little to that total.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Randy Moss waved to the cheering crowd as he went out to the Patriots practice. When it was over, he signed autographs for fans pushed up against the restraining rope.

Then he jogged over to a flock of reporters and chatted pleasantly for 6½ minutes before heading away from the sunny practice field where temperatures soared well into the 80s on Friday.

All in all, a positive first impression.
