SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Emmitt Smith thinks federal investigators targeted Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to get to others involved in an alleged dogfighting operation.

"He's the biggest fish in the whole doggone pond right now so they're putting the squeeze on him to get to everyone else," Smith said Saturday.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Former Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves told Michael Vick several weeks ago he would help the troubled quarterback in any possible way.

That offer still stands, even though Vick is now under federal indictment for hosting dogfights and brutally killing pit bulls.

I just lost quite a bit of respect for Emmit.

Maybe Emmit needs to go re read the 19 page indictment. This isn't about attending a few fights and hanging around the wrong crowd.

I'm a bit surprised at him. Like Portis and Horn, I am highly suspicious of anyone who tries to minimize or defend Vick at this point.

Ditto for Dan Reeves. If some one wants to be his friend and support him thru this, fine. But let's not try and whitewash him by blaming it on the wrong crowd.

Question for Emmit and Reeves: Have you ever heard of personal accountability?

Hmm. But he isn't absolving Vick of anything, just saying the feds are using him to get the higher-ups, which is normal procedure. At least, that's how I read it, mb.

I keep going over it , I wish Emmit would have worded some things differently. If he is defending Vick, then yeah, I would lose respect for him, too.

snip from aticle:

"Now, granted he might have been to a dogfight a time or two, maybe five times, maybe 20 times, may have bet some money, but he's not the one you're after. He's not the one you're after, he's just the one whose going to take the fall -- publicly."

No, Emmit. It says he owned and ran a dogfighting enterprise. It says they found 60+ dead carcasses on his property. It says they rounded up animals that had all the earmarks and signs of having been in dogfights. It says they found items associated with dogfighting: a pit, rape stands, treadmills etc.

Yes, Emmit, I agree they are looking to go after bigger fish, but Vick wan't a minnow in the pond, he was a pretty decent sized fish in his parts.

snipit form article:
But Smith also placed some blame on Vick, saying athletes need to realize they have to break ties with some people from their past "because where we're going, it's not for everybody to come with us. You have to learn to cut some of those guys loose. Because the things that they do, we cannot do no more."

So what you're saying Emmit is: Vick bears some blame, but not much.If not for his bad choice in friends he would be OK. Umm no, he has been warned for years about his associations and he doesn't give a shit. He obviously wants to be associated with and participate in activities that his friends and he share in common. You are right about severing ties with the old crowd. But he did not. There fore he is soley responsible for his actions. He made a choice.

That's how I read it Level. If he had said Vick is a pawn for the bigger catch without adding the excuse factor and the " well maybe kinda sorta was involved",  I would read it like you.

There's been a lot of that going on.  There comes a time when stop singing kumbaya and starting whipping each other (or at least I hope so).

PITTSBURGH - Mike Tomlin has long said he would coach football 365 days a year if he could. The Pittsburgh Steelers are beginning to believe it.

The Steelers’ training camps became relatively predictable during former coach Bill Cowher’s 15 seasons, with a limited number of two-a-days and occasional practices called off to give the players a break or to take a trip to the movies

49ers Poised to make a run?

The NFC was put on notice for 2007 on the final day of 2006.

As conference top dogs Chicago and New Orleans quietly closed the regular season in meaningless games, the San Francisco 49ers were also closing out the year, out of the playoff race.

But that final regular-season game, against the Denver Broncos at Invesco Field, was far from meaningless.

Tom Brady leads list of clutch players

Every athlete in the NFL has some degree of swagger and bravado. To emerge from years of competition at the Pop Warner, middle school, high school and college levels and land in the lucrative world of professional football can demonstrate to even the most extreme pessimist that they have something special.

There are differentiations at that elite level. Those that have true self-confidence don’t get anxious in situations when the game is on the line. They rise to the moment and even exceed their normal levels of achievement.

Tim Couch, Mr. Football, All-American and the first pick in the NFL draft, will try one more time to catch on with an NFL team. In an exclusive interview with our Drew Deener, Couch said he’s in the best shape of his life and has contacted every team in the NFL, looking for work.

Couch, who will turn 30 this month, said he’s up to 245 lbs., more than 20 lbs. over his playing weight when he was drafted by the Browns in 1999, and has lowered his body fat content from 13 percent to five percent.

The former Leslie Co. and UK star says he will make one final attempt to play pro football, but he said, if no teams call, he will walk away from the game he loves.

“I know it’s cliché, but I’m doing it for the love of the game. It’s what I love to do, it’s who I am,” Couch told 27 SportsFirst. “I want to walk away on my terms.”

Couch has been working with a personal trainer, rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder in Miami. Couch says he’s been throwing pain free for the better part of the past year.

Haven't read all of the posts about this, but saw Emmitt's name pop up in the latest posts box.

So pardon me while I poke my head in here and share a little nasty tidbit about Emmitt Smith.  My breed of dog is the Akita.  A good friend of mine is a long time breeder of Akitas and had sold two of them to Emmitt back in the 90s.  Good breeders always sell with a contract that is meant to protect the dog(s) above all else.  Well she got wind that ole Emmitt wasn't taking care of the two Akitas he purchased from her.  They were being seriously neglected and abused.  She enforced her contract with Emmitt and took back possession of the two dogs she had bred.

So he's just another scumbag in my book.

Was there verification that he abused them? If so, shame on him, I agree.

Next thing I know, somebody will post that Roger Staubach is a Jihadist.....

He actually admitted it and although she really wanted to pursue charges against him, her main concern was getting the dogs out of his hands.  He knew bad press could be detrimental to him and she didn't have the money to take on his high priced lawyers, so he just agreed to let her take the dogs back as long as she didn't pursue charges.  As soon as she left his home with the dogs, they went straight to a veterinarian who examined, photographed and documented their poor condition and injuries (both old and new).

No info on Roger, but will let you know if I hear anything.
