NEW YORK (AP) -- Gene Upshaw was taken aback when he first saw the list of retired NFL players applying for financial help under a new program to help those with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. "I played with or against quite a few of these guys," the executive director of the NFL players' union said Wednesday. "I knew one or two were having problems, but I never knew the extent." http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-nfl-retiredplayers&prov=ap&type=lgns LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter pleaded no contest Wednesday and paid a $1,000 fine for punching Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Levi Jones after a disagreement at a casino blackjack table. Porter did not appear in Las Vegas Justice Court while his lawyer, Karen Winckler, entered the plea to a misdemeanor battery charge and paid the fine, said a court aide to Justice of the Peace Pro Tem James Gubler. Coach Mike Shanahan, who had pledged to release Kircus if it was determined he was at fault in the fight, said Tuesday that Kircus passed a lie detector test administered by an expert. Kircus will remain with the team regardless of the legal outcome of his case. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AgutSRU2wv0OlonbiFxHBjFDubYF?slug=ap-broncos-kircus-assault&prov=ap&type=lgns
