Keyshawn Johnson gave up football for a microphone Wednesday, retiring from the NFL and taking his opinionated voice to ESPN.

Johnson, one of the NFL's top receivers during an 11-year career, agreed to a multiyear contract and will appear on several ESPN telecasts, including pre-game shows on Sundays and Monday nights.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Angry and frustrated because his deal with Miami has been held up, Trent Green practiced with Kansas City on Tuesday while insisting he has no plans to ever play for the Chiefs again.

2007 will be a season of baby steps for the Minnesota Vikings.

I like the idea of Keyshawn as commentator.  He can't be any worse than Joe Theisman.

'I don't want anyone to end up like me'
Plagued by post-concussion syndrome and battling an amphetamine addiction, former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson is a shell of his former self
By Jackie MacMullan, Globe Staff  |  February 2, 2007

It has all unraveled; his career, his marriage, his health, his reputation. Former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson was once a Super Bowl champion and a fan favorite, admired for his jarring hits and thoughtful approach to a violent game.

But now he is a struggling ex-athlete who has become unreliable and unreachable -- making promises and commitments he does not keep -- the subject of steamy tabloid gossip, shunned for an alleged domestic abuse incident involving his wife.

Johnson, 34, suffers from such severe depression that some mornings he literally cannot pull himself out of bed. When the crippling malaise overtakes him, he lies in a darkened room, unwilling to communicate with his closest family members.

minnetar

I am sure you will see this as an attack on you but it is meant to be helpful. I, so I am sure most others, constantly see posts from you complaining about people being mean to you. You seem to assume that anyone that does not agree with you is actually attacking you. If this is really the case perhaps it is time for you to look at how you respond to people to see why they respond to you as they do.

I am sure your bypass surgery was difficult for you but it actually has nothing to do with anyone here. I am recovering from my second round of cancer surgery but I would not expect anyone here, or in real life for that matter, to treat me any differently because of it. I want them to treat me and respond to me as the person I am not because they feel they sorry for me or feel they have to tip toe around me in case something upsets me.

If these things really hurt you as much as you say they do perhaps this is not the best place for you to post right now.

susie,
thanks for your opinon as everyone is entitled to one.  People think because they are on the internet they are entitled to say anything to anyone.  Sorry if i am a person who does get hurt by someone i do not know.  i can't be callous.  That is just me but don't belittle me for that as you see it differently.

i appreciate you taking the time to give me your opinon even though mine might differ from yours.  You can disagree with another without being mean or hateful.  You disagree on an opinion and not make it person.  Making it personal only shows a person has no self esteem and that is the only way they can make themselves feel better.  Argue points.  Not about the person themselves.  What did you basically do in your response.  You responded to me on a personal level rather than about an opinion.  That is the basic difference about debating.

Forget T.O. - Cowboys returning to basics

By William BendetsonMSNBC contributor
According to surveys, the Dallas Cowboys are still America's most popular team, and when Bill Parcells was coach it was almost a poetic match — a legendary brand coupled with one of the best coaches in NFL history. To the surprise of Cowboy ownership, Parcells departed this offseason for the coziness of retirement.

Enter Wade Phillips, Parcells’ total opposite. Stoic and reserved, Phillips is living his dream as someone who went from Texas high school football coach to the coach of the Cowboys. Not bad, considering many of those coaches dream and never come close.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has a simple goal for 2007: Play 16 games this season.

"I haven't played a full season since my rookie year. I've just got to get back on the field and stay on the field. If I stay on the field and be productive, I'll be fine," Haynesworth said.

Staying on the field has been a problem for the six-year NFL veteran, the man most people remember for stomping his cleated foot onto the face of Dallas center Andre Gurode's unprotected face last October.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, whose team has had several run-ins with the law, apologized Thursday for comments about police possibly targeting his players.

"Yesterday, I gave a radio interview and made some comments that did not illustrate the high regard I have for the Cincinnati Police Department. I apologize that what I said did not reflect my true feelings," Lewis said.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- An 81-year-old Texas woman has pleaded guilty to trying to extort $2 million from Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr.
Ruby Y. Young of Kerrville pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court. She received a probated sentence and agreed not to have any contact with Starr or his family.

Young was accused of mailing letters to the 73-year-old Starr last year with the intent to extort money under "a threat to injure the reputation" of the Green Bay Packers' two-time Super Bowl MVP. The letters threatened to reveal an alleged relationship they had nearly 50 years ago.

Young's attorney said his client had to plead guilty because of the strong evidence against her.

"Given the facts and the recommendation of probation, there's no other choice," Guy James Gray said. "The proof was plain and simple."

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was at a dog fight in 2000 and is "one of the heavyweights" in the sport, broadcast reports indicate.
An ESPN report Sunday cited a police informant whom a dog-fighting investigator called "extremely reliable."

"That's who bets a large dollar," the informant told the network. "And they have the money to bet large money. As I'm talking about large money, 30 to 40 thousand, even higher. He's one of the heavyweights."

When asked how he knows Vick bets that amount, the informant said, "because I've seen it."
