Would someone care to explain the plan in N.E. By slapping the nonexclusive franchise tag on Cassel Belichick and N.E. is guaranteeing a 2009 salary of 14.65 million to Cassel. For anyone keeping score that will be about 6 million more than Brady is slated to make in 2009
Can the Patriots really carry both these qb's without blowing up the salary cap and or team chemistry.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (2/8/2009 8:10:13 AM)

If they know for sure that Brady is back, they will allow another team to take Cassel, they will get 2 first round draft picks for him.  At this point they don't know about Brady and they would be nuts not to sign Cassel for insurance.  Look at their record last year with him - amazing.

All true Katy, but the question is .....what happens if no other team accomadates them,Brady returns and they enter camp with both of these guys
And the nominal back-up is making 6 mill more than the 3 Suber Bowl ring starter.....Ahhh J-E-T-S heaven
p.s Araton in the NY Times suggested Belicheck could send Brady a note saying he is no longer the qb of the NEP.....lol

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (2/8/2009 9:31:00 AM)

He only gets that for one year.
I don't think Cassel would have trouble finding a team that would be a taker.  Good QBs are always in demand.  Especially those that can be a franchise QB.
I really think they tagged him for insurance.  I also agree with the bloggers that say NE gave Cassel his opportunity, now it's his turn to fully realize it.

Go Steelers ! ! !

I should be getting superbowl XLIII patch in a few weeks, then sew it on my jacket with the other 5 !

slvemike4u -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (2/9/2009 6:10:08 PM)

You're actually admitting to owning a jacket with 5 SuperBowl patches sewed on.
Might I ask if you paint your face .

It's a brilliant ''tag and trade '' tactic by the Pats if you ask me. He'll prolly be traded for a good DB and a late first / early-second round pick.

As far as any prospective teams matching the tender... Its not going to happen - because if the Pats decline to ''match'' the offer, the other team has give up two first round picks. And again, not going to happen.

Part of the strategy utilized by the Pat's here is to make sure that any team interested in signing Cassel is weakened during the process.

I've been following the Cassel situation for a while, and here is some good reading regards the tendering/cap situation.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/08/uncapped-year-wont-have-much-of-an-effect-on-cassel/

The other thing to keep in mind for those folks who are Pat's fans but don't closely follow the team : The Pats have at least one other great QB prospect---Kevin O'Connell---- right behind Cassel they are going to develop.

And if they trade him, they will make out on the deal.  Cassel had a great season, but let's remember, the Pats had the weakest schedule in 2008.

Or most OCD about NFL football!

Brett Favre announces retirement!  (for the second time in 12 months)
And I feared that the off season would be boring.  Silly me.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (2/27/2009 3:23:39 AM)

The first winner in Free Agency:  Albert (the stomper) Haynesworth, signed with the Redskins shortly after midnight, reported overall contract, is 7 years, $100 million (of course it's doubtful he'd stay for 7 years and will never see $100 million, still a marquee contract).

TahoeSadist -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/5/2009 7:02:54 AM)

What has surprised you so far about Free Agency season? I was surprised that the Chiefs had to give up relatively little to get Cassel and Vrabel from the Patriots. I guess they have a lot of faith in that rebuilt knee of Brady's. Not that surprised that the Ravens held on to Ray Lewis, but Cleveland letting Kellen Winslow go to Tampa was a bit of a surprise. The biggest non-shock I think was reported in multiple places today that Dallas underwent an Owens-ectomy to remove the cancer from their locker room.

Mike & Mike, the other day, were discussing how you can't give away a First Round Draft pick.  It is problematic because teams are less and less enthusiastic to pay an untested rookie the going rate for first round.

Some things I enjoyed:
*Warner playing the 49's in order to increase his worth, then taking less to remain with the Cardinals.
*Cutler's meltdown regarding the Cassel-Broncos-Tampa situation.  And I'm left wondering WTF is going on in Denver, unless they actually think Cutler can't learn a new offensive playbook.
*T.O. being relased.  Who will take him.  Someone will.

Kellen Winslow has not fulfilled his promise, everyone was expecting great things, then he went and crashed out in that silly accident.

Katy..... I have to point out to you that this scenario where '' Warner played the 49ers ''  is a complete mis-characterization from what truly happened...

The 49ers front office at no time ever had any real thoughts about signing Warner --- It was instead a ploy to send Alex Smith a message and bring leverage to the 49ers when they re-work his deal.

The 49ers don't wanna have to draft a quarterback in the first round.....And if they can renegotiate Alex Smith's option from 9 million to 2.5 - 4 million, they can keep a quarterback who's familiar with the team and who knows/understands Norv Turner's ''digit system. ''

I would re-characterize it as '' Warner Played the 49ers and the 49ers used Warner to play Alex Smith '' [:D]

Dallas releases T.O.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!

Rainfire -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/6/2009 6:45:35 AM)

SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! Best news I've heard in ages. T.O. being released! [8|]  Why am I so not surprised?

(Oh ya, he was released from both my beloved 49'ers and Philly before.....)
