PITTSBURGH - Dwight White, the Steel Curtain defensive end known as “Mad Dog” who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 58.



The Steelers said White died at a Pittsburgh hospital. The cause was not disclosed. The team said White was released from the hospital after having back surgery, but then was readmitted with complications.



White is the second member of the original four-man Steel Curtain to die this year. Defensive tackle Ernie Holmes died Jan. 17 in a car accident in Texas.

That would be the preference of Adam Jones, the suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback who has been known by the nickname throughout his life. He'd like to be called by his given name and make "Pacman" a thing of the past.

DALLAS (AP) - Sports broadcaster Pat Summerall was recovering Friday from emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding, his wife said. Cheri Summerall said her 78-year-old husband was resting comfortably Friday in a Dallas-area hospital. Doctors told her that a new medicine he had recently started taking caused a reaction that induced the bleeding. The surgery was Thursday.    "He has really turned the corner," Cheri Summerall said in a story Friday on The Dallas Morning News' Web site. "The doctors are thrilled with Pat's progress. We are expecting a full recovery."    Summerall, a former NFL kicker and lineman, underwent a liver transplant four years ago and hip replacement surgery in January.

The lead plaintiff, Suzan Shown Harjo, said Friday the group will appeal.

Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged former Los Angeles Rams kicker Tony Zendejas with drugging and raping a female customer of his Pomona sports bar in January.

The district attorney's office says the 48-year-old Zendejas was arrested on felony warrants early Thursday at his Yorba Linda home.

He is charged with one count each of rape by use of drugs, rape of an unconscious person, sodomy by anesthesia or controlled substance and sodomy of an unconscious victim.

Zendejas could not be reached for comment. He remains in custody in lieu of $260,000 bail.

I think his rep is safe, even if he stumbles a bit. Most folks don't remember Johnny Unitas at the end, with the Chargers; they remember him leading the Colts. Same with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Every time I think of them, their days in San Francisco come to mind.
 
As to why they do it.... there's the competive fire. The body may not be willing anymore, but the mind and spirit are still there.
