And yet, listen to the roar of approval from the hapless Cubbie fans. I bet Domi was there somewhere, weeping.

PITTSBURGH - Dwight White, the Steel Curtain defensive end known as “Mad Dog” who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 58.

The Steelers said White died at a Pittsburgh hospital. The cause was not disclosed. The team said White was released from the hospital after having back surgery, but then was readmitted with complications.

White is the second member of the original four-man Steel Curtain to die this year. Defensive tackle Ernie Holmes died Jan. 17 in a car accident in Texas.

Shutdown Corner is giddy to present it's list of the 11 Coolest Helmets in Professional Football History. There are no concrete qualifications for this list; it rewards the traditional and the iconic, as well as the goofy and the peculiar. Bravery in design is also rewarded. Essentially, the list was made at my own fanciful whim

Glad to see both the Cowboys and Oilers on the list [8|]

No more "Pacman"?

That would be the preference of Adam Jones, the suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback who has been known by the nickname throughout his life. He'd like to be called by his given name and make "Pacman" a thing of the past.

"There's really just a lot of negativity behind it," Jones said. "It's just time for a change, man. I'm doing everything to make sure that I'm all right as a person, mentally and emotionally."

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ex-New York Giants lineman George Martin went through 24 pairs of shoes and lost 40 pounds before finishing his cross-country walk Saturday, raising $2 million along the way for sick 9/11 rescue workers.
Martin ended his nine-month, 3,003-mile trek at Embarcadero Park, where he was met by police officers, firefighters and other NFL alumni.

DALLAS (AP) - Sports broadcaster Pat Summerall was recovering Friday from emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding, his wife said. Cheri Summerall said her 78-year-old husband was resting comfortably Friday in a Dallas-area hospital. Doctors told her that a new medicine he had recently started taking caused a reaction that induced the bleeding. The surgery was Thursday.    "He has really turned the corner," Cheri Summerall said in a story Friday on The Dallas Morning News' Web site. "The doctors are thrilled with Pat's progress. We are expecting a full recovery."    Summerall, a former NFL kicker and lineman, underwent a liver transplant four years ago and hip replacement surgery in January.

Brett Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told his latest retirement reversal wasn't welcome news in Green Bay.

The team said it would do "what's right" in response to Favre's request, which was first reported by ESPN.

Should he stay retired?

WASHINGTON - The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians, prevailing on a technicality that again skirts the issue of whether the team's nickname is racially offensive.

In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks.

The lead plaintiff, Suzan Shown Harjo, said Friday the group will appeal.

Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged former Los Angeles Rams kicker Tony Zendejas with drugging and raping a female customer of his Pomona sports bar in January.

The district attorney's office says the 48-year-old Zendejas was arrested on felony warrants early Thursday at his Yorba Linda home.

He is charged with one count each of rape by use of drugs, rape of an unconscious person, sodomy by anesthesia or controlled substance and sodomy of an unconscious victim.

Zendejas could not be reached for comment. He remains in custody in lieu of $260,000 bail.

A deal could be reached within days to sell a majority interest in the Pittsburgh Steelers to the chairman of a Pittsburgh-based investment firm, taking control of the NFL franchise away from the Rooney family.

The shares would be sold to Stanley Druckenmiller, chairman of Duquesne Capital management, making him principal owner of the team. Two officials familiar with the talks identified the buyer as Druckenmiller and said Monday that the deal could be completed by the end of the week. They declined to be identified because they were not directly involved in negotiations.

sasseeNshy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/11/2008 9:00:51 PM)

Favre is going to play again, probably with the Vikings....home opener in Green Bay...kick ass, pay back....he will show them what happens when they don't give him the WR he wants...ie: Moss, however as a Pats fans, I feel GB's pain.....oh yeah........bring the 2008/09 season on..........!!

Level -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 9:00:56 AM)

Minnesota and Chicago would love Favre, but don't hold your breath waiting on the Packers releasing him, just for that reason. I imagine they'll trade him, maybe Tampa Bay, or the Jets?

slvemike4u -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 9:04:16 AM)

Can't see Favre playing anywhere but Green Bay ,it would be akin to Dimaggio playing in Boston(I mean Joe ,not Dom)if this happens Rodgers must be looking real good in mini-camp

Level -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 9:07:39 AM)

I wonder about Rogers..... several Packer players have said they'd like Favre to come back. It just looks like the GB brass are tired of the merry-go-round with him.... but if he goes somewhere else, and leads them to a huge season, heads may roll.

angelic -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 9:13:34 AM)

~fr~  Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this thread is alive again!  :) :) :) (God I miss football!!!)

I am disappointed in Favre (sort of).  Isn't it better to end your career on a high note, rather than take the chance of going down in flames for one more season?  He already has a spot as a Hall of Famer, why put a blemish on that?  I fear that if Favre plays again anywhere and does a nose dive, that is how people will remember him and that he, himself might live to regret it.

Certainly not an easy decision.

Level -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 9:34:08 AM)

I think his rep is safe, even if he stumbles a bit. Most folks don't remember Johnny Unitas at the end, with the Chargers; they remember him leading the Colts. Same with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Every time I think of them, their days in San Francisco come to mind.

As to why they do it.... there's the competive fire. The body may not be willing anymore, but the mind and spirit are still there. [:D]

More on Favre:

quote:

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers' general manager and coach don't plan to grant Brett Favre's request for his release.

If he does rejoin the team, The Associated Press reported, it won't be as the starting quarterback.

Speaking later to ESPN.com's John Clayton, Thompson said he is prepared to accept Favre's return and not necessarily as a backup.

"It's not accurate," Thompson said of the AP report that Favre would come back as a backup. "We don't know what role that would be. He can come back as an active member of the Green Bay Packers."

Thompson reaffirmed to ESPN that the Packers won't release Favre. He would not discuss trading the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Thompson said he had not received any inquiries from other teams as of Saturday morning.

Lets not discount the allure of the millions more  to be garnered by hanging around...I know I would plat till they forced me off the field especially at these prices

Yeah, the big paychecks make a difference. But Favre always struck me as someone that would damn near play for free.

Ain't that the truth...much like a Mattingly(I know all my references are Yankees)seems like these guys are having more fun than everyone else out there

Speaking of Yankees, mike, I just heard Bobby Murcer passed away. [:)]

angelic -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (7/12/2008 5:19:06 PM)

Didn't Favre begin his career as a Packer?  I cannot imagine he would be happy playing elsewhere.  However, as you stated it is his love of the game that keeps him wanting to come back again and again.  He is in a class by himself as far as I am concerned.  He doesn't play for the money or the glory, but for the love of the game and nowadays it seems like that is a rarity.

No, angelic, he was drafted by the Falcons, of all people. How many times have they kicked themselves over the years for letting  him go?
