Well, that would be better, but even with 4 teams in a playoff, Georgia, Missouri, and USC would have been out in the cold this year. 8 would be optimum.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The president of the University of Georgia proposed an eight-team playoff system to determine the NCAA's national football champion. Michael Adams, chairman of the NCAA executive committee, has opposed a playoff for 20 years but said Tuesday the current BCS system is "undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."    Adams wants the NCAA to seed eight teams into the four bowls. If one of the major bowls declines to participate, then another bowl could fill the void.

My pics are your picks.  I think that Eli will have a sucky day, some inconsistency is going to shine through.  Brett can taste it, so great to see him in the playoffs.

Getting to the playoffs in the AFC is a feat of glory. One division has 3 teams in the playoffs. I am happy with how my team played this season. I think that Ben has matured from last season. I was upset last night when people I was partying with said he "sucks" and "put in Charlie" and "he shouldn't go to the Pro Bowl", I was thinking WTF? He has a short memory and tries to get the team back in when has INT failure.

Fans can be freakin idiots, can't they. Glad you had more levity. I thought PITT lost b/c it was unable to run the ball effectively against JAX. Parker was out and so was the teams LT, if I'm not mistaken.

The comeback was an inspired effort, and the two-point conversion shouldn't have been nullified by that phantom holding call.

------

I know LaM has knocked Rivers, and not that I'm putting him on a pedestal, but a guy like him needs some help to succeed (as just about every QB does.) Once the line gave him time to throw, he delivered.

To me its very hard to evaluate the play of a QB, because his output is so related to the rest of the offense: how the line is blocking, how the RBs keep defenses honest, and of course how the receivers play. If any of those three components breaks down, the QB usually ends up taking the blame while playing under duress. (Exhibit A. Roethelsberger in the first half throwing three Ints while the running game was disabled.)

A friend of mine, taking the above into consideration, considered Peyton Manning to have the superior season to Tom Brady this year.

a. Brady had his full compliment of receivers this year. Manning was minus Marvin Harrison.

b. Brady's line has been healthy all year. Manning's has not.

c. Bilicheck kept Brady firing away for 4 QTRS, whereas Dungy shut Manning down when games were assured.

In sum, Manning's 14-2 record and performance were more impressive and valuable than Brady's considering the circumstances of their individual seasons.

PICKS:

SEA + 9 seems like a lock over GB to me. I agree with Caitlyn, SEA pass rush dooms the Packers. Prediction: SEA wins 17-16.

NE at home will soundly defeat JAX. Gerrard really can't pass well enough for them to catch up or keep up. On the other hand, there's an odd shot of JAX running the ball down NE's throat and controlling the clock. If that's the case, NE wins a squeaker. Prediction: NE wins 27-16.

NYG upset Dallas. Eli Manning serves notice on Tiki Barber to shut up once and for all. Predition: NYG win 28-24.

SD upsets the Colts and LT has a huge 150 yard game rushing. SD also wins the turnover battle. Norv Turner gets credit for outscheming Dungy' Cover-2 defense. SD wins 31-27.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Falcons are interested in Southern California coach Pete Carroll for their head coaching job.

A person familiar with the team's coaching situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Falcons want to speak with Carroll, who is on vacation in Hawaii. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Falcons have not officially met with Carroll.

If Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and his team are lucky, Bill Cowher will stay retired.

Don't bet on that, of course. As human slot machines go, Snyder has the loosest payouts in the NFL when gambling on big-name coaches. Snyder's history as an owner is loaded with one splashy hire after another, from Marty Schottenheimer to Steve Spurrier to Joe Gibbs, who ended his four-year run with Snyder on Tuesday by resigning.

Snyder can't help himself from going after big names. He doesn't have the patience to actually do some research on who would be a good coach or, more important, why. Moreover, Cowher, who has said publicly several times this football season he's going to wait another year before getting back into coaching, may not stop himself from chasing the cash. When Cowher was with Pittsburgh, he was willing to extend his contract for another year or two if Pittsburgh had ponied up $7 million a year for the right.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2008 5:22:10 PM)

I can't wait for the weekend, because I see these games quite differently.  We agree about the Patriots, but otherwise...not.  I'll grant that the team with the best chance of an upset is the Giants.  But I really don't see the Seahawks coming anywhere near Green Bay.  (Of course, I picked them to lose to the Redskins too.)

As for Brady vs. Manning: I've always thought Manning was the superior QB, and I agree that his team had more injury issues this year than Brady, but I can't say that he had a better season.  Manning single-handedly lost the game against the Chargers.  Brady didn't do anything to hurt his team this year.  In fact, in the head to head game, I think Brady outplayed Manning.

Please let them hire him.  We can start a pool on how long he will last.  It's best for him to stay at cushy USC.

I would be surprised if he leaves USC; he loves the college game, and is building a legendary career there.

But these guys are soooo competitive......

Edited to add: I've said it before, I'll say it again; the Falcons were fools to get rid of Jim Mora.

domiguy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2008 6:02:53 PM)

Carroll...A man's got to know his limitations...

I think the Pack can handle Seattle....I wouldn't be willing to give up the nine points, though playing on the frozen tundra is a huge advantage for precious and the gang.

Wide open playoffs...The Cowboys look like they are ripe to be knocked off. I would target T.O.'s ankle and often. Without him they have looked incredibly average. Nothing would please me more than Romo (Unprecious young upstart that he is) sobbing on the shoulder of a plastic surgically altered Jones.

It's the little things in life that bring me joy.

Well, I was just making the argument for Manning. One thing does seem clear, after Manning and Brady there is a drop off. Brady won PLAYER OF THE YEAR and OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. So your view is the prevailing one.

My picks are pretty much pure guesses.

My favorite moment of the playoffs so far was when Hines ward caught that tipped ball for a big gainer, and Madden commented, "Those tipped balls just seem to happen here."

His tone of voice said it all...........

-----------

The X-Factor this weekend to me is FRED TAYLOR. He wants a SB badly, and he's flashing bright in the twilight of his career. JAX might somehow rally and tap into trying to get him that ring as a subplot to: THE WARRIOR'S LAST STAND. I would love to see TAYLOR shred NE for 150+ yards enroute to an upset.

----------

Domiguy, hope your post makes it up before the SB.

Yes, but that goes to the earlier point: Manning was without Marvin Harrison and his backup, the Ohio State guy who pulled up lame. Plus the LT pulled up lame too, if I recall.

The Ravens were without Todd Heap for most of the year, and the QBs took a beating b/c of it and the red zone offense really stalled out as well.

Brady without Randy Moss might not have engineered that comeback. (He caught that all-important 50 YD BOMB.) Just remember how good Cunningham and Culpepper looked throwing to Moss.

Okay, I don't want to change my mind about Big D, but I like statistics too.  Dallas has never swept a team 3 times in one season.  They will have to do that to beat the Giants.  Thoughts?  Wait, Jessica is reportedly not attending the game, perhaps it will be possible.

Sanity -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/10/2008 7:12:19 AM)

It probably has more to do with what Jessica's doing with Tony the night before the game than on game day itself.

well i have to say i have not been able to keep up with football the last few years but my Lord and Mistress have been allowing me to do so this year.which i am very happy about. now be it my dream Super Bowl game would be seeing the Seahawks take on the Steelers again.Yes I said again.

saw the game last weekend and fully intend to watch the Seahawks and Packers. even though i am rooted now in PA i still have to be faithful with the team i grew up with which was the Seahawks.if all goes well they may just maek it back this year.looks like the game this weekend will help the deciding factor there.

it would have been nice to see Hasselbeck and Farve fo head to head again, after all Hasselbeck was trained under him.so all i can say is this

Go Seahawks!  (and yes i do call them Seachickens occasionally)

Oh, you are central.  Pick your poison....Steelers or Eagles.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/10/2008 8:23:36 AM)

Well, those are all valid points, and if I were DRAFTING, I'd pick Manning ahead of Brady.  I agree that Brady's crazy TD numbers this year aren't as impressive as Marino's in 1984 or Manning's in 2004, because Belichick was mindlessly running up the score in games that were no longer competitive.  But this was certainly not Peyton's best year.  His yards per attempt and interception rate (the two most important stats for a QB) were both still good, but off from previous years.  Meanwhile Brady had by far the best year of his career.  EIGHT picks in 578 pass attempts?  That would be remarkable even without the 50 TD's and 4800 passing yards.

Besides, it's not as though Marvin Harrison is Manning's only weapon.  The Colts have a much better tight end and Addai is a more dangerous pass-catching back than anyone on the Patriots.  And let's not forget that Reggie Wayne is almost as good as Randy Moss.

This is why it's so hard to evaluate individual efforts in football - it's the ultimate team sport, nothing happens in a vacuum.

The story of the Colts this year is really extraordinary and I guess it says something about this Pats team that they were able to overshadow Indy - a team with that many injuries to important players going 14-2 is astonishing. I'm a NE fan but I have no problem admitting that Peyton has played at an MVP level these past two years. In a way I think he's kind of underrated, because of how people take his level of play for granted.
