Fox and Friends, have made the claim that Sharia Law is now in effect in the US. Just look here. The Daily Show addresses the claims. In short, a YMCA decided to offer swim classes to Muslim women and girls. To accomplish this in light of the beliefs of these women, the YMCA put female life guards on duty during the class and locked the mens locker room door so that no men can enter the pool area during the classes. Now, I am sure someone is going to agree with FOX and Friends and make the claim that this is just a first step toward the eventual elimination of our legal system in favor of Sharia Law. I will point out that there is one christian religious group in the US who would like to see the country become a theocracy and put Leviticus in place as the legal system.

What?!?!?! A cable infotainment network that specializes in catering to stupid people was catering to stupid people? Relax, Jlf. The same amendment that protects their right to be stupid also restricts those fundies you are so worried about from seizing control. Funny thing. The church my grandfather preached in also prohibited mixed bathing, and he certainly wasn't a Muslim.

~Fast Reply~ I heard about this several days ago. I wonder about the legality. The YMCA receives federal and state funds. Are they allowed to discriminate by preference religion and sex? I think that it would be perfectly fine if this was a girls swim hour and there was a boys swim hour at another time. But, it does not sound like that is what is happening. Are they going to have a Catholic swim time? A Jewish swim time? A Hindu swim time? A Baptist swim time?

The story says they are only blocking men from entering at that time. Any other girls of any religion (presumably) can swim with the Muslim ladies. If they have enough interest in a boys only swim hour they probably will offer it. If they do receive federal and state funds (are you sure about that?), I would argue that they are in violation of the first amendment and several non-discrimination laws. Whether that's true or not, all the Pablum-pukers care about is that *only Christians* are inconvenienced. Every religion (it seems) except for Christianity must be pandered to.

First, the YMCA is funded primarily through donations, membership fees, and the occasional government grant. They also receive funds from the United Way and other community service agencies. Government grants are unconditional when going to organizations, I know that women only colleges have gotten government grants and have not opened enrollment to men. Secondly, women of other faiths can enter the swimming pool area during the time the Muslim women and girls are in the pool, it is men that are not allowed in, and I dont see a problem with that. Now considering that Mormon missionaries, Jehovah's witnesses and other christian churches that make a nasty habit of knocking on random doors seem to be exempt from various ordinances about door to door soliciting, do people really want to complain about one hour a day where certain tenants of a religion's dogma are respected and catered to?

Errrr... folks, it's the 'Young Men's/Women's Christian Association'. They are funded by private donations like the United Way. They provided the facilities where basketball and volleyball were created. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YMCA#North_America When they choose to let Muslim women swim non-coed, it's no different than if they rented out one of the rooms for a private bar mitzvah party. Some folks really need to get a grip...sheeesh.

Half the Ten Commandments are religious rules that are not part of any western legal tradition. The other half are laws common to all societies.

Perhaps (I know there's been some quibbling on exactly what influence the Ten Commandments has had on our legal system). But there's something universal about the Ten Commandments, since even the religious rules can be very easily adapted to other religions (You shall have no other god before me...pretty sure Muslims feel that way about Allah; Honor your father and mother...pretty sure most societies teach, or at least pay lip service to, respect for one's elders). On the other hand, if my memory of Leviticus is right, it contains a whole host of narrow restrictions that aren't grounded in any universal principle, but are fairly specific to Judaism.
