Truthfully, afaik the YWCA doesn't take government money, so I don't know of a legal problem.

But supposedly Christian institutions that cater to different religions..... Let's just say they would never get my support.

Have anyone seen how the women of the Mormon church are dressed? Or the Amish as required. I don't see anyone complaining.

Has anyone seen the Amish requesting special consideration at the pool?
Yeah, I thought not.

Oh yes they have. As well as special consideration in taxation, labour laws, equality legislation.

And that's ok, you're entitled to your point of view.

But the US government doesn't have a mandate to promote the Christian religion over others, and it could be that some people would like to encourage interfaith collaboration.

The slightly sad thing about this OP is that, allowing for separate bathing times for a specific group has next to nothing to do with applying the legal system that that group would prefer, it has more to do with cultural sensitivity.

Really? Where?

Oh fuck, my bad. No, I have never seen the Amish asking for special consideration at a swimming pool.

[ETA]

But they have requested sex separated school busses http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/01/cortland_county_town_split_ove.html

Like the various churches around the country that let Jewish or Muslim groups use their facilities during unused times, when those other groups have had their own facilities destroyed, or are just starting up for some reason?

I saw nothing in the article that said the separate bus runs were requested in order to separate the kids by sex.
That quibble aside, it's an interesting case.

quote:

New York’s education law requires districts to bus students to private schools within the district’s mileage limits. But the specific arrangements are left to the district. The state pays 90 percent of Marathon’s $676,000 transportation budget...

The Amish aren’t happy. Amish parents say they don’t want their children influenced by non-Amish culture — things like clothing and technology and language. They fear their children would be bullied over differences, such as dress: black slacks, jackets and hats for boys and simple long dresses and bonnets for girls.

And they want to be bused at different times. Amish school days start later, after farm chores, and Amish say their children can’t make the district’s early bus runs.

I'd say the Amish have a case as far as their concerns regarding bullying and times. But if you want to remain separate, you can stay separate on your own nickel... (This thinking applies to a lot of issues regarding American Indians, too).

I heard about this several days ago. I wonder about the legality. The YMCA receives federal and state funds. Are they allowed to discriminate by preference religion and sex?

I think that it would be perfectly fine if this was a girls swim hour and there was a boys swim hour at another time.

But, it does not sound like that is what is happening.

I'm sure if enough men want to have a "men only" swim hour, they'll start having that.

Where I went to college, some men wanted to take the women's self-defense class, so they started a men's self-defense class. Big deal.

Do the Amish go to the pool? The Amish do request a LOT of special treatment about a lot of things. They don't have to pay into Social Security, they don't have to send their kids to school past 8th grade, they won't have to get coverage under the ACA. The cops pretty much let them police themselves.

I don't think that poster ever returned to provide proof of that assertion... the YMCA itself says differently.
