Sorry. If you have to weigh whether the KKK was republican or democrat history will side with them being Democrat.
The KKK was instrumental in maintaining Jim Crow laws and Democrat power all the way to the 50's.

So the kkk is a bunch of liberals?

It was never about party names it was about what their beliefs were concerning civil rights issues. The Liberals and Conservatives have a long history of being divided on the issues of race in the US. Conservatives have traditionally been opposed to equality and inclusiveness of non white races. Liberals have been more or less in favor of inclusiveness. This had (and still has) no bearing on whether they call themselves Democratic or Republican. (There ARE Liberal Republicans and Conservative Democratics) Underneath the rhetoric, these opposing views did and still do have more to do with economics and political power than they actually have to do with skin color.
And no one had better ask me for a freaking citation....its American history - go look up yourself.

If I remember my polysci class correctly, a police state is a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic, and political life of the population.

you forgot part of the "definition"..
"A state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic, and political life of the people, especially by means of a secret police force."

so what do you think the NSA is/does? and what Homeland Security is/does behind the scenes? I suspect there are lots of other "secret" things they do which has not been made public (or confirmed).. Just as war in other countries has changed, so has the way the US govt controls its population... there are already drones introduced to watch us.. that will grow and spread like a cancer.. into other cities, and down to local govt police forces.. I expect at some point there will be a "Drone Tax" to help pay the costs.. that's just one example, out of many which I wont bother to expand on..

as far as blame goes.. it goes to all Presidents (past, present, future) cuz they all engage in secret, behind-the-scenes "warfare" on their own population..
