Thanks for that Mike. The word from the critics is that Day-Lewis plays Lincoln with a silly voice. Any truth in this?

None that I noticed.I thought he hit the right note and held it throughout the film.
I'm not sure which critic or critics are saying this,I haven't myself read that, but I just don't see where that comes from.....Lewis brought Lincoln to life,in all his majesty, all of the "Father Abraham" yet still a politician of immense skill.
Really, really a masterful performance, one which should garner him a statuette ,but who knows with Oscar

Being a movie buff and a huge fan of Daniel Day Lewis's acting, I've read several accounts of how he prepares for roles and this one in particular.

There does exist, actual recordings of Lincoln's voice. Mr Lewis used every available scrap of information on Lincoln to prepare. He was so passionate about recreating Lincoln that he did what many actors before him have done and tried to BE Lincoln all the time on set, and much time off, during the making of the film. He just felt so obligated to the role and character and felt it was the only way possible.

I cannot imagine what his family goes through when he prepares for, and shoots, a movie. They are probably glad he only does about one a year.

I also love Tommy Lee Jones and look forward to seeing him in the movie as well. Sally Field has never been a favourite of mine but she has, I grudgingly admit, done a role or two that I was impressed with.

Thank you Mike. I already knew I would love this movie and have been anticipating it since I read that it was going to be made and who was working on it. Now I am even more anxious to see it.

That's one thing I find curious,I'm a bit of a movie buff, somehow I missed all of the usual pre-movie buzz about this project.....lol
Than I saw the commercials about a month ago and I was like...."wow".....just curious thatI hadn't taken note of thise before that.

LaTige I was not aware of the particulars of Lewis's preparation....but that doesn't surprise me....this is what great actors do when they assume a role
However he prepared, whatever his little ticks are....this was the performance of a lifetime in a role of a lifetime
I promise folks ,I will not make another post in which I say he is a sure fir nominee, and a likely winner of,a statuette.....but I stand by that
As I said run to see this film...and Latige,I enjoy a film at home too...but some deserve the whole big screen feel...this is such a film, please go see this in a theater....You will not be sorry you did(besides if Yo are sorry You can beat my ass,win win for all ;-)

I'm going to see Lincoln tonight, and I am going alone.
This indicates one of two...perhaps three things
1)I really want to see this movie
2)I have no patience for those in my life who are doing other things this weekend and asked for a raincheck on the movie night. She and I can see the Bond flick next week....lol
3) I'm really not getting along with my sister .....lol

How about you guys, will you attend a movie alone ?
I know for myself the answer would, for the most part be no.
But this movie looks good, and dammit to hell I don't want to miss it and next thing I know I'm watching it on a DVD...I want to see this in a theater
Not only does it look good...it's Speilberg,it's Daniel Day-Lewis ,it's Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Fields....there's just no way it isn't great.
Not with that talent, and this story...the end of slavery(non consensual anyway) in this country.
Dammit if your heart can not be lifted by this tale....check your pulse, something has gone wrong .

I guess Spielberg couldn't find a way to work that in.

Hmmmm, I'm a Civil War buff, love DDL, think well of TLJ, read the book, hate, as in abhor, loath, despise Spielberg.
Quite the quandary

I know virtually nothing of the American Civil War. Apart from it was the first to have photo journalism

It's quite common in the city for people to attend movies alone, and I've certainly done it myself. Usually a matinee, though, rather than in the evening.

I'm glad you went (and enjoyed) the movie! It's on my list of must-sees, but have been too busy of late to get to the movies....

Not this cat. I spent like 5 years devouring everything written about the war. I've walked battlefields from Murfeesboro and Shiloh to Gettysburg, Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor...pretty much every battle fought by The Army of North Virginia. I used to live maybe five miles from Antietam and have spent days on that field. Hell, I dropped acid on the fourth watching the re-enactment of Pickett's Charge.
It's the single most defining era of US history...and as a history buff, it fascinates me.
Not just the repercussions, but the men themselves, giants like Lee, Sherman, Longstreet, Grant, Sheridan.

Most movies I see alone. Not because I want to all the time, not because Master doesn't want to go but it's just that I have more time on my hands in the daytime while Master is at work. But there are times when I enjoy going to the movies alone. I like the quiet time, I like the sparse theater, I like the alone time. But most times I would rather go with Master.

Well, from the reviews, he did an excellent job with the film nonetheless.
