Okay,to any who might be interested in my opinion(cepting Baroana,who doesn't deserve my review after that silly post)
Not sure what evening the Oscars are handed out,if I recall it is late February,not really important I guess...but what will be important is that most of the folks associated with this film keep that date open
Spielberg and Lewis are no doubt nominees(and I can not imagine anyone else giving a better performance nor directing a better movie this year!)Sally Fields might just have a book end to go with her Norma Rae statuette.....and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Folks the movie was simply amazing,it is film making at its highest.Spielberg was of course blessed,in this case,with a story that can not help but inspire,filled with characters of historic proportions.
This is Lincoln as he attempts to get the 13 amendment passed ,the war has dragged on for 4 long years but victory is in sight,he has just been re-elected to office but he feels that he needs this amendment passed before the war ends...lest he lose the power he now wields (in addition the re-admittance of the secesh states would make passage nigh on impossible.) Tommy Lee Jones plays America's leading abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens....he should be nominated for best supporting character,his fellow nominees should be,David Strathairn who plays Sec of State Seward and James Spader in the roll of a lobbyist W.N.Bilbo.
Folks thats just the tip of the iceberg as far as great performances go,name any great movie and the hallmark is,for me at least,that every last role is cast so perfectly,Casablanca or The Godfather come to mind....this movie has that.There isn't a sour note in the whole flick.
I defy anyone to go to this movie and not enjoy it
A personal note....years ago I took my son and nephew to Washington,it was and is one of my fondest memories.I cried like a baby twice on that trip.The first time was when we went to The Wall,my son,who was 14 at the time asked me why it upset me so.he knew I was a little young for that war...I told him that I had grown up with Walter Cronkite reporting each and every evening just how many US serviceman died that day in "SouthEast Asia"
The second time I cried,my son had no need to ask why...he was crying to.We were standing in front of Mr Lincoln's immense form.Lincoln has been a here of mine since I was a child,he bestowed upon all of us this great nation....Spielberg brought that hero to life in this film.It is a great film,I would urge anyone to see it on that basis alone....but above and beyond that it brings Lincoln to life,how can you not see it!
p.s. Supposedly Spielberg delayed the opening of this film till post election.His hope was that is watching it,in seeing the great partisan bickering going on even back than...that somehow it might help heal us all from this most recent round of bickering
I'm not sure if it will do that...but it just might make us all pause a beat or two
