slvemike4u -> Lincoln (11/17/2012 2:10:16 PM)

I'm going to see Lincoln tonight,and I am going alone.
This indicates one of two...perhaps three things
1)I really want to see this movie
2)I have no patience for those in my life who are doing other things this weekend and asked for a raincheck on the movie night.She and I can see the Bond flick next week....lol
3) I'm really not getting along with my sister .....lol

How about you guys,will you attend a movie alone ?
I know for myself the answer would,for the most part be no.
But this movie looks good,and dammit to hell I don't want to miss it and next thing I know I'm watching it on a DVD...I want to see this in a theater
Not only does it look good...it's Speilberg,it's Daniel Day-Lewis ,it's Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Fields....there's just no way it isn't great.
Not with that talent,and this story...the end of slavery(non consensual anyway) in this country.
Dammit if your heart can not be lifted by this tale....check your pulse,something has gone wrong .

Oh let me know what you think when you've seen it please.

slvemike4u -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:05:31 PM)

Sure
I'm seeing it at 10:25 my time(obviously,if I was seeing it your time I would be.....well shit,I don't know what I would be but confused certainly [:)])
Anyway,seeing it in my time and I should be back sometime after 1:00 am .Near or less ;-)

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:07:23 PM)

Thanks Mike, hopefully I'll be asleep by then.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:11:49 PM)

Watching part one of Crossfire Hurricane, the Stones movie. It's well worth the effort

Level -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:18:05 PM)

I have no qualms about seeing a movie alone. I was going to see Lincoln yesterday, but it'll have to wait.

LaTigresse -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:19:15 PM)

I am weird in that, as a general rule, I would prefer to watch a movie at home.

Lincoln will be purchased and watch as soon as the DVD is available. I love love LOVE Daniel Day Lewis. His acting is perfection.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:23:02 PM)

I only tend to go the cinema with my kid, which is funny as hell as I spend more time watching him enjoying himself but it's nice to just go alone & just become absorbed by the film. Rather than taking someone else.

I see nothing weird about prefering to see a movie at home. At home you can set the volume at whatever level you prefer (the last several times I went to a theater I needed to take ear plugs, and now I simply refuse to go). If you bought the movie to view at home you get to see it again any time you want without going at the time the theater schedules, and without paying their entrance fee. You can pause a movie at home to use the restroom and not miss any of the movie. Snacks don't cost an arm and a leg, or any other body parts. And if you need to pass gas you just do it!

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:35:36 PM)

Re gas. I for one am thankful that you prefer to watch the movies at home.[;)]

absolutchocolat -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:42:14 PM)

you're not weird! i'm the same. if i can watch it on my laptop or on netflix, watching movies at home is what i prefer. i get annoyed by the fifteen minutes of crappy previews, babies howling, cell phones going off, and i always sit next to someone who has to blurt out "OH MY GOD, DID YOU SEE THAT?!" every ten seconds. plus, the food is gross and expensive. pass!

daniel day lewis is just outstanding. 'there will be blood' gave me chills!

Baroana -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 3:50:34 PM)

I've seen the previews. I say, playing Lincoln as the pre-incarnation of Cosmo Kramer was an interesting choice.

Please post a review.

Run,do not walk,run to see this movie.
Let me walk my dog and I will post a proper review [:)]

slvemike4u -> RE: Lincoln (11/17/2012 11:46:00 PM)

Okay,to any who might be interested in my opinion(cepting Baroana,who doesn't deserve my review after that silly post)

Not sure what evening the Oscars are handed out,if I recall it is late February,not really important I guess...but what will be important is that most of the folks associated with this film keep that date open
Spielberg and Lewis are no doubt nominees(and I can not imagine anyone else giving a better performance nor directing a better movie this year!)Sally Fields might just have a book end to go with her Norma Rae statuette.....and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Folks the movie was simply amazing,it is film making at its highest.Spielberg was of course blessed,in this case,with a story that can not help but inspire,filled with characters of historic proportions.
This is Lincoln as he attempts to get the 13 amendment passed ,the war has dragged on for 4 long years but victory is in sight,he has just been re-elected to office but he feels that he needs this amendment passed before the war ends...lest he lose the power he now wields (in addition the re-admittance of the secesh states would make passage nigh on impossible.) Tommy Lee Jones plays America's leading abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens....he should be nominated for best supporting character,his fellow nominees should be,David Strathairn who plays Sec of State Seward and James Spader in the roll of a lobbyist W.N.Bilbo.
Folks thats just the tip of the iceberg as far as great performances go,name any great movie and the hallmark is,for me at least,that every last role is cast so perfectly,Casablanca or The Godfather come to mind....this movie has that.There isn't a sour note in the whole flick.
I defy anyone to go to this movie and not enjoy it

A personal note....years ago I took my son and nephew to Washington,it was and is one of my fondest memories.I cried like a baby twice on that trip.The first time was when we went to The Wall,my son,who was 14 at the time asked me why it upset me so.he knew I was a little young for that war...I told him that I had grown up with Walter Cronkite reporting each and every evening just how many US serviceman died that day in "SouthEast Asia"
The second time I cried,my son had no need to ask why...he was crying to.We were standing in front of Mr Lincoln's immense form.Lincoln has been a here of mine since I was a child,he bestowed upon all of us this great nation....Spielberg brought that hero to life in this film.It is a great film,I would urge anyone to see it on that basis alone....but above and beyond that it brings Lincoln to life,how can you not see it!

p.s. Supposedly Spielberg delayed the opening of this film till post election.His hope was that is watching it,in seeing the great partisan bickering going on even back than...that somehow it might help heal us all from this most recent round of bickering
I'm not sure if it will do that...but it just might make us all pause a beat or two [:)]

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/18/2012 1:12:03 AM)

Thanks for that Mike. The word from the critics is that Day-Lewis plays Lincoln with a silly voice. Any truth in this?

epiphiny43 -> RE: Lincoln (11/18/2012 1:39:18 AM)

You have heard that Lincoln Did have a high voice? I doubt Mr. Spielberg or Day-Lewis neglected to do the research on the people in this historical drama? It would be nice, if unexpected, for 'critics' to do theirs?

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Lincoln (11/18/2012 3:59:54 AM)

I hadn't known that fact Epiphiny, thanks. As to the critics why would they research when being a knowitall is usually sufficient?

LaTigresse -> RE: Lincoln (11/18/2012 5:52:30 AM)

Being a movie buff and a huge fan of Daniel Day Lewis's acting, I've read several accounts of how he prepares for roles and this one in particular.

There does exist, actual recordings of Lincoln's voice. Mr Lewis used every available scrap of information on Lincoln to prepare. He was so passionate about recreating Lincoln that he did what many actors before him have done and tried to BE Lincoln all the time on set, and much time off, during the making of the film. He just felt so obligated to the role and character and felt it was the only way possible.

I cannot imagine what his family goes through when he prepares for, and shoots, a movie. They are probably glad he only does about one a year.

I also love Tommy Lee Jones and look forward to seeing him in the movie as well. Sally Field has never been a favourite of mine but she has, I grudgingly admit, done a role or two that I was impressed with.

Thank you Mike. I already knew I would love this movie and have been anticipating it since I read that it was going to be made and who was working on it. Now I am even more anxious to see it.

PeonForHer -> RE: Lincoln (11/18/2012 6:37:42 AM)

FR

I'll never forget Stephen Fry being interviewed after he'd played Oscar Wilde. He said that there were extant recordings of Wilde speaking - in a very high pitched tone. Apparently, Fry said, it was the fashion back then. But it wouldn't have worked to copy Wilde's squealing pitch in a present-day film, the makers believed.

Mind you, I appreciate that an upper class, foppish, Irish/English man-of-letters is not the same as a 19th century American statesman.
