I'm an ink virgin, and will be until this november when I get my music tattoo on the left side of my rib cage (I know its gonna hurt like hell on lsd but its a significant reason all tied into one)

For those of you who have ink, whats your experience ie what do you have and why did you get it :)

What should I expect when I face the needle

Well, I have 9 tattoos, she has 3. Sure, it's gonna sting, but it's not so bad...and I have my whole spine done. Actually, they kinda tickled to me.

The worst part is that your shirt might end up sticking to it for a day or two...which sucks.

Edited for stupid spelling mistake...damn touch keyboard...

I have 2.
It is going to hurt like a bitch on the ribs. There is no way around it. My shoulderblade was the worst, because I could feel every time they hit my bony shoulder!
My thigh, however, tickled like crazy. I laughed. The tattoo guy thought I was crazy.

For your tattoo, go with someone you like. Check out their previous work. Ask them to show you how they would interpret what you want. If you have already done that stuff, expect copious small stings and itchiness. I hardly felt my tattoo when I had it done (if you're wondering, it's on my upper right arm, and it's the image I use for my forum avatar). I didn't get another tattoo because I didn't find anything I felt strongly enough about getting tattooed. I have considered it two or three times since then (that was in 1990). Recently I have been considering a second design, but have made no plans.

I have 2 tattoos... one on my left foot and one on the back of my neck. Both of them are relatively small, and have significant meaning. I wouldn't say they tickled, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. I'm sure you know this, but it all depends on your pain tolerance.

I have German on my right shoulderblade, and Anubis on my thigh.

Pop an aspirin or some other mild pain killer before you go. Use aquaphor for aftercare, it is good stuff. You can get it at Walgreens or CVS for cheaper than a lot of the tattoo places will sell it to you for. Plus it minimizes scarring and keeps the junk out. I've used it on both tattoos and never had a problem. (In addition to the stitches on my finger when I nearly cut the damn thing off making dinner, you can barely tell I did anything to it and I needed EIGHT stitches on my tiny finger.)

Where are you from? I got my tattoos in Chicago and Virginia Beach. Kind of a long shot, but I know good artists/parlors in both places.

Oh wow, Ireland huh? :P My husband's grandparents are from there. He has a silly accent he grew up with. Half Irish, half British is the only way I could peg it. I sound Canadian, I guess, so we match.

The German says "Glucklich allein, ist die Seele, die Liebt." in old German script of course. The end of a verse of a play that became a poem of sorts.

Anubis is the Egyptian god of the dead, yes. A friend of mine drew it up for me, he is a graphic designer. :)

What kind of cereal did you eat?

If you don't like pain you can get
"painless tattoo cream" from ebay.

There wasn't really any such thing
when I got mine.

The closest thing you might have experienced that is similar to being tattooed is a bee sting...hundreds of bee stings. After a bit the area they are working in gets endorphins and that helps, but when they move away from that area it hurts a lot again.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

I have two tattoos. For the last one I used a topical skin numbing cream called Emla which can be purchaed at the drug store. I felt much less pain the second time.

i have 1 tattoo. it's three starbursts on the top left hand side bikini line. it didn't hurt at all, and the guy that did it commented on how i never moved. had i known it wouldn't hurt i'd have had a larger design done going all the way down.

I wouldn't recommend aspirin, as it "thins" blood (well, here is a better explanation that I would be able to formulate: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_aspirin_thin_blood )

Emla cream is always an option. I checked with my guy before I have mine done (a treble clef with a bass clef dangling from it, above my right ankle). He did NOT recommend it as it makes the skin "spongy". I know there is a better word for it than that, but I can't think of it. But because the ski is softer than normal, it makes the work a little more difficult. He said he would not guarantee his work if I used it. I chose to go without, and ended up giggling for an hour.

I got my first one when my son turned 10. My girl will be 10 in April, so I am looking for another music design.

Keep in mind that pain is very subjective. My nursing instructors always stressed that pain is what the person says it is. Pain can also be influenced by our expectations. If you go into this experience expecting it to hurt? It is going to hurt. Don't let other people's experiences influence your expectations. As for the aspirin, Greedy is right, although the word she is looking for is anti-coagulant. Try taking some for of ibuprofen. Second choice would be paracematol.

As for post tattoo cleaning....plain old dish soap. That is what was recommended, and it turned out beautifully. Don't waste money on something you will only use a few tablespoons of, then throw out.

Good luck, and I hope you post a picture for us. Many artists will take a pic immediately and email it to you, especially if in ana area that might be difificult to see.

There is no difference between the ink colors.

I might be using the wrong word. I was assuming that paracemetol was acetaminophen. Anyways, if you have ibuprofen over there, use it. It will be the most useful for what you are doing.
