A conundrum for conservative talk radio

By Paul Farhi, Published: March 18

Dan Sileo just got a taste of what might be called the Rush Limbaugh Effect. On his sports-talk radio program in Tampa last week, Sileo enthusiastically endorsed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ interest in a trio of free-agent players. Maybe a bit too enthusiastically.

“If they got those three monkeys, I’m good,” Sileo said about the players, all of whom are African American. “I’m ready, man . . . I want those guys. Those guys are great players.”

That was Monday. By Tuesday, Sileo was gone, fired by WDAE-AM (“The Sports Animal”), where he’d worked behind the microphone for nearly 15 years. The station, owned by radio giant Clear Channel Communications, has declined to talk about Sileo’s dismissal.

Nevertheless, in the wake of the furor over Limbaugh’s denunciation of Georgetown law-school student Sandra Fluke last month, Sileo’s firing suggests to many that something has changed about the sensitivities of talk-radio stations. A medium built on pushing the limits of acceptable speech appears, once again, to be reassessing just where those limits are.

Limbaugh, the nation’s most popular talk host, is still being battered by liberal activists and others for calling Fluke “a slut” and “a prostitute” for her advocacy of mandatory insurance coverage for contraception. Dozens of advertisers have declared Limbaugh’s program a no-go zone, at least temporarily. This has left his syndicator, Clear Channel-owned Premiere Radio Networks, to fill some of the commercial breaks on his program with freebie public-service ads.

The fallout appears to have less to do with listeners’ reactions to his derogatory comments — there’s no evidence that Limbaugh’s audience has abandoned him in the past two weeks — than with advertisers’ nervousness about being associated with something “controversial,” which is precisely what political talk radio strives to be.

The medium has endured many such controversies before, of course. The influential Joe Pyne pioneered “confrontational” radio in the 1950s, and Limbaugh got his start in the mid-1980s as a replacement for Morton Downey Jr., whose shtick was insulting callers to his program.

But some in the talk business suggest things are different now.

For one thing, the Limbaugh flap has demonstrated anew how individuals and interest groups, such as the liberal Media Matters for America, can gin up and sustain outrage via social media (in Limbaugh’s case, President Obama’s consoling phone call to Fluke probably helped fan public revulsion, too). The group waged a sustained campaign targeting Glenn Beck’s advertisers that drove many off Beck’s highly rated Fox News program and ultimately ended Beck’s association with the cable network. Similar campaigns drove Don Imus and Dr. Laura Schlessinger from the air after they made inflammatory comments.

I'm not sure this should be classified as a "Rush Limbaugh Effect". Almost this exact same scenario played out many years ago on a live TV broadcast of football. I can't remember, but I believe it was on Monday Night Football. It was common for the commentator to call players "Monkeys" and it finally caught up to him in a negative light.

Either way, this is a great example of inexcusable behavior and banter.

Well be sure to get back to us when you are sure .... Sorta .... there was a piece on the one local radio news program where they were talking about 'local' hosts seemingly upping the ante since Limbaugh's remarks and even had one guy saying "Rush's perceived comeback seems to have stimulated many to push things a little farther lately".
So I don't know, maybe you're right, maybe not.

She was having DAILY conniption fits, attacking anyone she could sink her teeth into. I wasn't listening when she finally blew it but she was due IMHO.

YUP! I'm sure. We should not be giving Rush Limbaugh credit for these things. He has always been a crass ass, but he didn't start any of this. He simply got called out and was able to keep his $50 million dollar gig. Many others have done less and seen the ax drop on their head. From news to radio to columnists; this has been going on long before Rush's comments became political and front page news. Heck, some of the sponsors that dropped him are already back advertising.

As for the sports radio host--Completely different situation and there is a background that is completely tied to it. And, he's not locked into a major multi-million dollar contract nor is he protected by the republican party. Funny how power corrupts completely.

What advertisers are those that constitute "some"? Care to drop the names in this prestigious list?

And wow, btw... All of a sudden Rush sounds like he's more than just a mere entertainer. You'll get no argument from Michael Steele btw. He ACKNOWLEDGES Limbaugh's role. He resigned.

I'm not sure your diagnosis of where this is at demonstrates a command of the facts. See, the opposition isn't done with Rush.
They JUST STARTED circulating a petition in Mass to kick him off the Boston airwaves and he's not exactly back on the air in the western half of the state, now is he?

So now we're comparing calling a planted, professional protester at a fake "committee hearing" a slut, to calling three Black guys monkeys... And it's Rush's fault... Got ya[8|]

Naw, she's just an innocent law student caught in the crosshairs[8|]
quote:

Before attending Georgetown, she graduated from Cornell University in 2003 and spent five years working for Sanctuary for Families, a New York-based nonprofit aiding victims of domestic violence. While working, she launched the agency’s pilot Program Evaluation Initiative. She also co-founded the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which, after twenty years of advocacy, successfully advocated for legislation granting access to civil orders of protection for unmarried victims of domestic violence, including LGBTQ victims and teens. Fluke was also a member of the Manhattan Borough President’s Taskforce on Domestic Violence and numerous other New York City and New York State coalitions that successfully advocated for policy improvements impacting victims of domestic violence. While at Georgetown, she worked on issues that involved domestic violence and human trafficking.

Oh that poor, naive girl asking for a little compassion!

LOL! "Suggests to many..."

There is that MSNBC patented phrase "suggests to many".

Whenever I hear or read that phrase it "suggests to me" that someone is selling snake oil again because that phrase is meaningless. Completely. Total Snake Oil and the best there is and so "Many" could mean the smallest cable newscast audience known, that of MSNBC.

P.S. I just have to thank the OP for a post and view that suggests to many the Left is hitting rock bottom in its ability to attack the more popular (amazingly more popular) and followed, clear channel conservative hosts as well as the just as amazingly more popular Fox News channel on cable. Now this can actually be supported with industry numbers so we don't need to just say "many"; we can say with truthfulness, MOST.

Crack cocain is amazingly popular too.

You associate crack cocaine with the clear channel hosts and Foxnews? Perhaps you could elaborate on this because "many" feel that would difficult to support.

P.S. "Many" feel that word is spelled "cocaine".

<Ed McMahon voice>You are correct sir[:D].......and the viewers with addicts.......they`re not going to rush for the high-brow commentary.

Couldn`t be a more accurate analogy.

Anything else?

Oh that poor, naive girl asking for a little compassion!

So now you're saying a socially conscience young woman cannot voice her opinions or work in support of her beliefs?

BTW what does her, impressive, work history have to do with her being a "professional protester?"
