ORIGINAL: Hillwilliam I see some minor correlation but that's it. In 81, you have the inverse correlation you're claiming but 82-89, there really isnt much either way. 91-95, prices drop and the popularity of the prez is flat. 99 thru 2008, the popularity of the prez follows gas prices up and down which is the opposite of what you claim. It looks to me like some news hack put up a graph and made a claim about it while counting on large numbers of ignorant people to believe him. 1981 was the year Reagan took office. Generally speaking, presidents enjoy a high approval rating during their initial days in office. People thought that he would be the savior after Carter. 1999-2008 gas up, approval up? So you're saying that George Bush got more popular as time marched on? Please learn how to read charts correctly. 99-2008, gas followed lockstep with approval ratings. when gas was high, approval ratings were high. This also implies the converse. I'm not saying he got more popular. Nice try at strawmanning. As gas went down his approval went down. As I said before. Some hack writer was hoping that lots of ignorant people wouldn't be able to read a graph so he could claim what he wanted. It appears he found at least one. ETA. With Dubya's approval rating falling along with gas prices in that graph, is it time for the conspiracy theorists to come out and ask if his friends and contributors in "Tha AWWWWL Bidness" were manipulating prices downward in an attempt to give him a boost?
