I was assuming there wouldn't be a nipple as the child would be using it. Without nipples, how do you make the distinction between cleavage and breast exposed via breastfeeding?

Yeah but that might traumatize women who haven't had a baby yet, causing them to never have babies and therefore endangering the human race.

The thread I participated in... the La Leche method is something I taught in L&D. I dont see FB as saying breast feeding isnt important. I dont see them as saying women shouldnt breastfeed. I do see FB as holding to their policy of no nudity.

Madonna and Child-Like Paintings Are Obscene Too?

I was surprised when I heard Glenda’s story of not being supported by her Church family around her breastfeeding her infant daughter (with a nursing cover no less!), but I am usually never surprised when I hear about Facebook removing yet another breastfeeding photo or art piece. But I did come close when Kate Hansen sent me the details of Facebook’s removal of her three “Madonna and Child Series” portraits. It made me wonder, would Facebook remove a classic Madonna nursing baby Jesus painting? Have they? Do they really consider Mother Mary obscene? How far are they willing to go with these inane policies?

Do they remove the stories of breastfeeding? Or is it just the photos?

They are likely trying to be consistent in their enforcement. To do otherwise would invite people to cite those then time they didn't uniformly apply it as proof of some sort of problem.

I posted one of them on a figurative artists group on facebook, and was surprised to see that it had been removed on March 27th, 2010. I had already posted two more portraits, and I went ahead and reposted the one in question, thinking it must have been a glitch. My new artwork was removed on March 28th, and then on March 29th the re-posted portrait was removed as well. I reposted all three in a row, as a kind of experiment, and then I received the following letter in by email:

Kate’s feels that “the treatment of my breastfeeding subject matter by facebook is indicative of the very high expectations that society holds for mothers. Mothers are expected to breastfeed, every health organization tells us it’s the best choice, yet images of women breastfeeding are treated with hostility and disdain. Women are treated badly when breastfeeding in public. The result is an impossible ideal of motherhood that no mother could possibly meet.”

I just see it as FB stuck between a rock and a hard place. I understand the difficulties women face when breast feeding in public. Its a necessity, they must feed their children. There is no necessity, that I can see, to post photos of breast feeding on a public site.

I am one who would fight for every woman to have the right to breast feed any place she pleases. I just dont see the purpose of having the same right to post photos of that event. There are many things people do daily that are natural events. Photos of those acts are also not allowed.

Lol, yes, but have those acts been subject matter for art for almost 2,000 years?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1028888/Vatican-plea-uncover-Virgin-Mary-breast-feeding-baby-Jesus.html

It might be enough to make Banksy drop his aerosol in the gutter in surprise or cause Lucien Freud to spill paint down his smock in shock.

But the Vatican yesterday said it wanted to see more paintings of a semi-nude Virgin Mary.

What Catholic leaders have in mind is more images of Mary breast-feeding baby Jesus.

The official newspaper of the Holy See has declared it is time to undo four centuries of church disapproval of traditional representations of Mary as an earthy, fleshy mother doting on her newborn son.

The latest edition of L’Osservatore Romano ran two articles by respected art critics who said that for nearly 1,500 years the Madonna was portrayed partly clothed and shamelessly nursing the Christ child.

One of them blamed Protestant prudes for changing the trends in religious art that then led to the Virgin being covered up and left critics wondering if the infant Jesus was bottle-fed instead.

Such currents were so strong that even the nudes in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel were covered up in fear of giving offence, and today the best places to see pictures of Mary nursing Jesus are not churches but major art galleries housing collections of Renaissance paintings.

But the hugely influential newspaper - which is often seen as having the support of the Pope - has now called for the “artistic and spiritual rehabilitation” of “loving and tender” images of Mary breast-feeding.

The intervention could inspire a revival in sacred art that would spell the end of 400 years of dressing up the Virgin to make her look “respectable”.

but I'm anti censorship

I wish that people actually understood the meaning of the word censorship before they attempted to use it in a sentence.

Fair enough. Rewrite: I'm pro breastfeeding and anti the suggestion that this is not a normal, natural activity.

Our Mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.

Domain names are inexpensive. Web hosting is inexpensive. I have my own web site. Most web hosting outfits care not what you upload there provided that it is not illegal. I doubt that many would take issue with the topic at hand. If you feel that strongly about the issue (and I agree with you, for what it's worth) that's the route to explore. I don't think it's fair to take Facebook to task for exercising their right to determine what is and is not acceptable on their publicly accessed yet privately maintained forum.

I don't intend on signing any protest either. I don't understand why someone would want the world to see something so personal either???
(Next thing we know someone WILL be posting their childbirth pics online!)

And I think Tazzy's avatar is VERY CLASSY! (Smiles)

Why the fuck do people think other people WANT to see them breastfeeding? I personally find it kinda creepy that somewhere a woman is all "Oh, this would make a great picture! Lemme show it to mah frens!"

That, my friends, is total parental overshare. Right up there with the mommies that post diaper photos of Jrs first poop, and the placenta she just popped out. Guh. I know what tits are for. I know the various purposes they serve. Does not I want or need to see it on FB. Next thing you know, someone is gonna start posting pics of Jrs entrance to the world (actually, this has been done. And it was still creepy as fuck). Uhm yea. Its natural, but is it necessary to post it on fb? Does it help Jr exit? Nah...Didnt think so since I know we all fell out just fine without our parents posting the pics to FB. And I am sure some of yalls mamas breastfed ya just fine without FB pics.

If FB decides that it crosses their nudity rule, so be it. Take your ball, and go to another sandbox. Its really not that friggin hard. I would love to post some of my tasteful sexy pics on fb. Knowing their rules, I cant, so I link those that are on my "other" facebook to them if they care to peek. Nothing to really get your panties in a wad over.

I have spent a lot of time in Italian Catholic churches, and believe me, there are plenty of Madonna and Child paintings that depict Mary nursing Jesus. So I was a little surprised to read of the "policy change" in the Catholic Church.
I also don't understand all the histrionics about mothers nursing in public, but I also see no reason why anyone would want to take, let alone post, pictures of it either. Just like I could never understand people who videotaped the birth of their children. Who really wants to see that?
I join in the admiration of your new avatar, Tazzy

Goes without saying I'm opposed to censorship of virtually any kind, but that being said I see no reason breast feeding should be special. If you're going to censor tits, what they're doing at the time isn't relevant.

I guess I don't get what the big deal is. If a certain site doesn't allow you to post a certain kind of photo, there are others ways to share those (if you feel so inclined) with friends and family. If they became "big brotherish" then perhaps facebook would lose enough followers that they may (or may not) re-think their stance. Their site, their rules.

I agree.

Apparently FB had some people complain about a few breast feeding pictures. So FB started taking some down, stating they were against TOS. Then, women started complaining to FB about them being taken down stating its a natural process and that women are proud of it. Now these women started a FB group against the removal and about 10,000 people have joined... a small number in comparison to the number of users.

I dont recall anyone posting delivery room pictures...a natural process.

The difference is that a vagina is a reproductive organ and a breast is not. It isn't about breastfeeding being a natural process but about it not being dirty or pornographic.

That I understand. According to TOS there, nudity isnt allowed. They consider a photo of an exposed breast as nudity.

I taught new moms how to breast feed... there is no better start in life. I just dont see why a photo must accompany the discussion.

FR: Who cares if it's dirty or pornographic? If it's against their OWN rules, then you don't post it there, or risk having it taken down or worse. Start your own site and make your own rules if you don't care for theirs.
