Stop Facebook.com from deleting breastfeeding photographs: http://signon.org/sign/official-petition-for

I don't agree with the legal premise here but I'm anti censorship of breastfeeding.

I think this is a bit overboard. FB isnt denying women the right to breast feed. It merely is dictating what photos can be posted on accounts. I see that as totally within their right to do.

i won't be signing it for two reasons.
1> i don't see it as censorship any more than collarme not allowing outright porn as the primary photo is censorship. facebook is a private company and they are free to establish whatever rules regarding nudity they want to.

2> the lawsuit is a joke and will fail, because the women's right to breastfeed isn't being challenged in any way, only their right to post pictures of themselves doing it on a privately owned website that has very specific anti-nudity rules.

The thing is, that by CA law, breastfeeding isn't nudity and FB is headquartered in CA.

Not sure that really matters. Its their web site. They can restrict what photos are posted as long as they do not discriminate against a protected class.

Take for example this one. Photos of children will almost always be deleted. Context doesnt matter.

Probably because any photos on a kink site of children could be reasoned to be child endangerment leading to child porn.

If it is "nipples" that is the issue, then they need to delete all the photos of shirtless men as well else they get nailed for discrimination. Whatever decision they make has to apply across the board.

Oh for Christ's sake, it's not the same and you know it. In our society it's legal for men to walk around shirtless. Maybe not right but that's the way it is.

I'm not signing either. As others have said it's not to protest anti-breastfeeding it's to protest anti-breastfeeding photos. Which the owners have every right to do.

The Web site responded in a statement saying users are not permitted to show a fully exposed breast.

"We take no action on the vast majority of breastfeeding photos because they follow the site's Terms of Use," the statement said. "These policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a safe, secure and trusted environment for all users, including the many children who use the site."

Per FB's TOS

You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

If FB backs off this, what will be next?

I guess I don't get what the big deal is. If a certain site doesn't allow you to post a certain kind of photo, there are others ways to share those (if you feel so inclined) with friends and family. If they became "big brotherish" then perhaps facebook would lose enough followers that they may (or may not) re-think their stance. Their site, their rules.

True. It therefore is kinda weird that the only times I have been stopped by the police was when I was riding my bike without a shirt, doing heavy work as at both times I was making a long distance bike ride and therefore was sweating profusely; one time during high summer in a populated area and one time in autumn at half past one at night in an empty countryside (shortly before moving through a sleeping town). Whereas the same day hundreds of thousands of people may have been on the beach wearing far less than I.

I have to wonder why you would want the world to see something so personal ? I have never had a problem with women breastfeeding their babies in public, but I have to agree with facebook on this one..

Are you asking me, or was that a FR? Because my post does not disagree with what you've said.

It's a privately owned website. They have the right to deny those photos if they choose.

I agree.

Apparently FB had some people complain about a few breast feeding pictures. So FB started taking some down, stating they were against TOS. Then, women started complaining to FB about them being taken down stating its a natural process and that women are proud of it. Now these women started a FB group against the removal and about 10,000 people have joined... a small number in comparison to the number of users.

I dont recall anyone posting delivery room pictures...a natural process.

Far enough. Rewrite: I'm pro breastfeeding and anti the suggestion that this is not a normal, natural activity.
