The one thing I miss about having a TV is Colbert and the Daily Show.  Ok, technically that is two things

Fightdirecto -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 11:39:48 AM)

FR:

There is a difference between taking money from some people by force in order to give it to other people for political reasons versus individual people making individual moral choices about "contributing to the welfare of the poor", yanno.

And, I think there is some confusion about the "without condition" part of his comment as well.

You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.

I don`t know Firm....

Isn`t always the right who`s proclaiming America to be a "Christian Nation"?

I say put up or shut up.

I don`t recall Jesus put any "conditions" on the Gospel.

Maybe you can point out where he might have?

Sanity -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 4:02:04 PM)

Right on Firm

Politicians using the power of the government to forcibly take from one group in order to buy elections (and therefore personal power and wealth) with the proceeds isnt at all "Christian" IMHO

Exactly thats why the bible doesnt contain the verse "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's." We all know its better that I care for the poor in my own special way when I have the time and the money rather than to have people force me to pay to take care of them.

tazzygirl -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 5:09:43 PM)

when I have the time and the money

You forgot ... the inclination

Owner59 -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 5:11:05 PM)

Cons read the Gospel the same way they read the Constitution.

They cherry pick their favs and forget the rest.

slvemike4u -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 5:28:41 PM)

Firm,it seems to me that the point you and sanity(boy ,being in that company must rankle...I know it would fuck up my day [:)])miss is that were you really thinking in terms of Christian values you wouldn't be looking on it as "forced" ...you would be full of Christian glee that the government is making things easy for you in your efforts to help your fellow man .[:D]
Try looking at it like this.....government is making your charitable efforts simpler [:D]

saves you going out to mail a check:) or deciding who you dont want to help;)

plushiecat -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/29/2011 7:04:07 PM)

To Masta808:

Seems you need to reread Matthew 22:21. Here's a few web pages for ya:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+22%3A21&version=KJV
http://lds.org/scriptures/nt/matt/22.21?lang=eng
http://biblia.com/books/esv/Mt22.21

There are, of course, many more, but yes, the Bible *does* in fact say "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.
