"There are, of course, many more, but yes, the Bible *does* in fact say "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. "

My book says Caesar can go fuck himself.

Firm,it seems to me that the point you and sanity(boy ,being in that company must rankle...I know it would fuck up my day [:)])miss is that were you really thinking in terms of Christian values you wouldn't be looking on it as "forced" ...you would be full of Christian glee that the government is making things easy for you in your efforts to help your fellow man .[:D]
Try looking at it like this.....government is making your charitable efforts simpler [:D]

Mathew 14:7 says quite plainly that the poor will always be with us, and if you wish or desire (a voluntary effort) you may aid them.

Taking taxes - which are a forced contribution, with the violent power of a government behind it - in order to "cure poverty" doesn't qualify in any Christian context, nor will it end poverty.

As well, Christian charity is its own reward.  Seeking or receiving public acclaim or acknowledgment for charity is its own reward, but does not endear the government or politicians to God for such charities, regardless of how much, or how good they are.

This is because Christian faith and actions are individual moral decisions, and the seeking of public acclaim is a personal selfishness, done for personal aggrandizement, not to honor Christ or God.

Therefore, using and espousing the use of taxpayer money to do charitable work through a government has nothing to do with Christianity or the Christian faith.

IMO.

Hmm, Red Cross, Salvation Army... FEMA...
Now who would YOU rather have helping you out in an emergency?

Owner59 -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/30/2011 5:48:42 AM)

Who would you turn down help from?

Is that really dumb or what?

Most times, folks in need don`t have such a wide choice.

America is a violent government? Why do you hate America? If you dont like it you can always leave. I hear Somalia is great this time of year.

In an emergency, I'd take all the help, from any agency or group that I could, until my circumstances became such that I no longer needed the help.  That is why when I became disabled, I applied for social security, lived on welfare for 2 years until I got the SSI, and then when I was able to work full time, I went off the SSI.

btw, wish me luck guys.  I applied for a new job today.  Same agency and pretty much same work as I do now, but in the community rather than a residential center.  Better hours.

kdsub -> RE: I just adore Stephen (9/30/2011 9:20:07 PM)

I personally believe that the primary responsibility of our government is to serve its citizens. Citizens in need are just as deserving as a tax cut for the wealthy. Otherwise…IF and I say IF we can afford to provide a path for the poor and disabled to provide for themselves and their families then it is our and the governments duty to provide for them.

But…I can at least see the other side of the argument. If we provided no public aid we could reduce the tax burden thereby reducing the number of poor and spurring employment. But I believe this would not work as the tea party believes. For this to work people would have to start saving for their retirement and pay exorbitant premiums for medical care in their latter years.

Past experience has shown this will not happen …people will not save….will not be able to afford health care… that is why we started social security.

There has not been enough private aid in the past and we can reasonably say there will not be enough in the future. So…. What alternatives do we have? Continue to provide responsible public aid our just let people die for their stupidity?

I don't know what he is, exactly, to be truthful.

He appears to be a bot, rather than a real person.
