Ok so I wanna take a Thanksgiving getaway this year. Master and the daughter both have to work and daughter is spending the holiday with her boyfriend and his family this year so it's just me...blah... so I need some ideas on where to go. It will be from Nov 23 to the 28th while I don't have classes. I'm thinking someplace that isn't tied up on the whole Thanksgiving theme-not looking to really celebrate it with perfect strangers around a table or do some kind of pilgrim trek. I'm thinking maybe someplace with some solitude, nature, breathtaking sites, maybe something with hiking or learning something new or at least try to lol. Destination is not an issue. Can be absolutely anywhere that will fit in my timeframe. I just need to get away for a few days. So all you travel adventurers out there, where would you go to? What have you always wanted to do or try? Where do you find a great place to be one with nature? To just breathe?

Try Ft Myers Bch, FL.. or St Pete. between them is Ft Desoto (a LOVELY state park beach). socializing if you want, solitude if ya dont...

I would suggest Sedona, AZ. The pictures I have seen of the red rocks are gorgeous!!! From what I have read you can hike or take jeep tours which means you could be as social or unsocial as you please.

There used to be a group that did a Thanksgiving group dinner in the woods every year. It was in the Red River Gorge in SE Kentucky. You can google it and see youtube vidoes of past years. Regardless if they are doing it or not, hiking in the Red River Gorge area is absolutely beautiful. Natural Bridge state park is also near by ( http://parks.ky.gov/findparks/resortparks/nb/ ). There are over 140 natural arch ways in the area and spectacular rock formation, and caves to explore. Hiking in the fall does not get much better than in Red River Gorge.

The first Christmas, after my father died, I rented some Cabins in Mississippi. I wanted my family to be able to enjoy the holiday without every single item and family ritual being a reminder of our loss. It was beautiful. There was the lake for boating & fishing and the woods for solitary strolls. I know you don't automatically think of Mississippi as being a vacation hotspot, but we really had a good time. I hope you enjoy your holiday, wherever it is.

Firm and I spent Christmas through New Years here last year. Gorgeous setting, lovely lodge, quiet and restful. Hike the trails, horseback ride, swim, enjoy the spa, or simply relax and read in one of the many scenic little nooks. I'd highly recommend this for a retreat. Brasstown Valley Resort If you are interested in arts and crafts, they are having their annual show during this time, too. If you aren't interested, don't let this dissuade you from going here... the lodge is huge and the events they hold are not "in your face", at all.

You know another place you may want to consider is a fitness/rejuvenation type spa resort - they aren't just for fat people and many of them focus on mental relaxation, beautiful country side and exercise options, have massages and relaxation concepts and allow you to spend time rejuvenating by hiking, biking and such. Some of them are in very beautiful areas and due to the nature of the place has great hiking trials and you could always use the information on nutrition and cooking classes etc. And one of the great things about them is you can go by yourself and they won't try and overcompensate because you are alone like some resorts may due. http://www.destinationspagroup.com/ http://traveltips.usatoday.com/famous-health-spas-united-states-3077.html angel

Thank you all for your contributions so far. I'm going to do some googling and youtube on them all. I've also thought about possibly Vail, CO or Vermont or maybe even Costa Rica or France but I just don't think 4 or 5 days will be enough for a foreign trip :(....might have to wait for Xmas for that.

How about an Indian reservation ? You seem not to want the commercialism, find out what it's really about. I don't mean go gamble. I don't celebrate that myself because of what it means, but if you wanted to get spiritual on yer ass......... You don't have to do the peyote or smoka da peace pipe, just be there. It will be different. If they let you witness some of the initiation rituals, try to stay calm, and remember they ae nowhere near as hard as they used to be. Well they are but they don't go for the higher levels now, and if they do it is in private. The worst that can happen is someone breaks their back or tears an arm or leg off. It's nowhere near like it used to be. But it will be different. Actually I would like to go. I just don't now if anything good will be going on at the time. T^T

What about a short 3 or 4 day cruise. I know a lot of people who cruise over the holidays and love it.

I've been to Indian reservations...very little ceremony from my experience lol...usually a lot of getting drunk and sitting on their stoops doing much of nothing. Not much different from anywhere else. The only time I saw the ceremonies you talk about were when the tourists wanted to see something "Native American". Besides during Thanksgiving I think that's about the last place I'd wanna be...right up there with Plymouth, Mass.

OK, you went to the commercial ones. There are others but they are harder to find. Tell them you are doing a thesis for college or some shit and you might get better. T^T

no. It wasn't commercial. I lived across the street from a reservation literally. They live in normal housing <albeit low income> and look and dress like everyone else except 3 times a year they held "powwows" to raise money for their tribe. The rest of the time they sat on porch stoops and got drunk like everyone else lol.
