Names and addresses of ingredients that contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) Tags: SCIENCE/HEALTH/CLIMATE/NATURE The first essential to coping with MSG is understanding where MSG is hidden -- just in case you would like to avoid it, or would like to begin to understand how much MSG you are able to tolerate without having an obvious adverse reaction.

IIRC it used to be made from some sort of sea weed. Now it's made from beets I think.

It probably wasn't unhealthy made the old way, but they fixed that I guess. A long time ago I used to practically drink the stuff, but now it bothers my throat if I use too much.

I use a Japanese brand of MSG (Ajinomoto) and shake it on certain things I want to bring out that Umami flavor without adding salt as it is lower in sodium (1/3 the content I believe) than regular salt.

MSG is harmless.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate#Health_concerns

This is not surprising since it is a sodium salt of a naturally occuring amino acid that each and every one of us makes naturally.

Thanks for the additional info Domken...I know some people do have a reaction to it but some people have a reaction to everything so it was nice to read more about it.

MSG is harmless.

Snake poison, water, nuclear bombs and TNT are harmless too.

MSG is harmless for healthy people.

Whether something is harmful or not depends on a variety of factors.

Myself the other week I started to eat some meat daily in an effort to loose some weight. After several days I started to experience disease symptoms. They were caused by glutamic acid, I concluded, and I immediately gave up this attempt to loose weight. The symptoms gradually disappeared - at least for now; I am always at risk.

People hear "glutamic ACID" and think it's a bad thing. I still think it was better in the old days, but I really can't say if it changed or I did.

One more time MSG cannot be harmful. It metabolizes into sodium, a substance our body needs (for proper operation of our nervous system among others) and which our kidneys can dispose of quite efficiently, and glutamic acid, an amino acid our bodies needs for making proteins and that our bodies make from scratch if needed.

If you had bothered to read the link I provided you would have found that even the original person who mentioned MSG in relation to the so called "chinese food syndrome" listed it as one of many ingredients when speculating on possible causes of an only anecdotally reported condition and never claimed to have any evidence linking MSG to anything.

As to Rule's fantasy, if glutamic acid from meat was making him sick his own body's production of the amino acid should have killed him long ago.

Yeah- only because we need pills!  So many that the RX industry has exploded.

You wont feel this way once your body gives out to middle age.

You do realize that I've already lived longer than the life expectancy as recently as 1890? That my condition was lethal until 1945?

^ there is plenty of improvement to be made in food/medicine.  The current state is not good enough.

I live like I am 80,  when I am only 47.  Even my neighbor- age 77 often has more energy then I do.

People often err because of lack of knowledge and you are one of such people, DomKen. Nor do you have the scientific inclination. It is one thing to be Clive Clavin, it is another thing to comprehend reality.

Ever thought that that might have to do with yourself and your habits and choices?
Like disregarding doctors orders and your disdain for much of the medical field, or your habit of living on food from the dollar store?

Ultimately only Pahunkboy knows what works for him.

The physician has not yet been born who can cure the hundreds of millions of people that frequent their waiting rooms - usually because of iatrogenical diseases.
For which reason I suspect that healthcare would benefit tremendously from having all physicians lined up and shot.

I will continue to make clear, not only is life expectancy far longer than it has ever been, indicative of a high quality diet and public health measures like vaccinations, modern medicine, including doctors, is the absolute and only reason I'm alive.
