I think a son knows a father a lot more than other people know that father. I don't think it has been blown out of proportion. When I have seen Ron Reagan speak it has been honest and truthful....which is the problem for folks like you that want to put Reagan on a pedastal.

You have been around here long enough to know that I would never put Reagan on a pedestal, but I respected him a lot more than the little weasel he fathered.

Who, Ron Jr.? What'd he do?

He's just some guy, isn't he? What'd I miss?

Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others

Reagan passed away 15 years after he left the office of President.

quote:

Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from three to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.

If you would quit trimming to only suit what you want to be true, you might actually see the whole picture. While its true, on average, 8 years, it can be as soon as 3 and as late as 20. The 20 would definitely fit into your time frame of 15 years out of office.

quote:

Tazzy, if your intent was to post information contradictory to mine, I believe you missed the mark. Everything you posted supports what I have asserted... that it is far more likely that any of President Reagan's behavior demonstrating poor memory and alertness was due to his advanced age and not to symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

What mine was meant too... and did show.. was that it was possible for him to have signs/symptoms of the disease while in office... AS I STATED.

quote:

From what i can find, it is possible he was suffering from the stages of the disease while in office. Though, how deeply into the stages, we dont know.

But, if as usual, you want to get your panties in a wad over facts, be my guest. Just dont trim my quotes to try and match something that you demand to be true when the rest of the quote points out it could be equally as false.

According to his son's new book. He was diagnosed 5 years after leaving office which means he was probably in early stages while in office. Does it matter? Should we insist on full medical disclosure from a President once a year? From reading it is obvious FDR's decisions were affected by his illness late in his last term......How does the country protect itself from a mentally ill President?

I have Alzheimer's and I certainly don't consider myself "mentally ill."  Right now, it's so subtle only repeated testing revealed it and it doesn't effect my day to day functioning.  Five years ago, I was teaching at the University level and writing books.  Would I have made a good president then?  Given the historical perspective, maybe.

Don't demonize the condition.  You'll be there soon enough.

True and false are ridiculous terms in this conversation.  While you may consider your position to be one of truth, I prefer to take a more reasonable path of what is more likely.

Again, while he may have technically been in the very beginning stages of Alzheimer's toward the end of his time in office, medical professionals who had the opportunity to examine him and/or have had cause to review his medical reports have stated that he showed no diagnosable symptoms of the disease.

We will never know to the degree of certainty required to establish truth from falsehood whether he did already have Alzheimer's when he left office.  We do, however, have the medical information provided by both myself and you, coupled with the opinions of the above-said medical professionals.  Considering this information and the fact that Reagan was 93 years of age at the time of his death, it is far more likely that any "symptoms" he displayed 15 years earlier can be attributed to his advanced age.

Again, it is doubtful that President Reagan was suffering severe "not really there" symptoms of Alzheimer’s while in office fifteen years prior to his death.

Here is his brother explaining it:

Ronald Reagan’s conservative son called his liberal half-brother “an embarrassment” Saturday for speculating in a new memoir that their father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease while president.

“Ron, my brother was an embarrassment to his father when he was alive and today he became an embarrassment to his mother,” Michael Reagan posted on Twitter.

“My brother seems to want [to] sell out his father to sell books,” he added in another tweet.

Which makes now the time to start ignoring political slogans.

And yes, before you bring it up I'm including hope and change in that.

I was listening to NPR a couple years back when they had Reagan's ex-press secretary on. He disclosed that Reagan was coached in depth prior to every press conference. All of his answers were written by someone else. What appears to be extemporaneous response was in fact carefully orchestrated.

Great Communicator my ass.

Great post .Especially in light of the great bumbler in the WH now. And he doesnt even have age as an excuse.

servantforuse -> RE: Reagan had Alzheimers while in office (1/17/2011 7:37:32 PM)

Ron Jr. never got along with his father when he was alive. He was a liberal and an atheist and that didn't go well with his mother or fathers beliefs. He will say anything to sell his book.

Please give me the link that provides backup that polio produces mental illness?

That is a completely new one on me.

As for the "bombshell", the extrapolation was made when it was his diagnosis was made public. It isn't news.

The newsworthy element is that had a diagnosis been possible sooner, his son believes Ronald Reagan, the President, would have stepped down.

There is nothing "disgusting" in that revelation.

edit: perfectionism

google yalta and FDR. Enough there for you to educate yourself on the popular belief that his illness did INDEED lead to a lack of resolve about the Soviets...

No offense, but given the condition, do you feel it would make sense that you'd be the leader of the free world for the next 8 years?

Not sure why he gets the "weasel" label for saying what he felt about his father.

I hope you believe me when I say you got my heartfelt sympathy and that I truly wish you the very best, but a president with a condition that impairs his memory and thought process is not a good idea. You know it's the guy with his hand on that button, the leader of the free world, head of your military and all the rest...

Nobody is demonizing the condition, just that having the condition disqualifies you for such little jobs as being the POTUS, just like nobody is going to demonize epilepsy but it also disqualifies you from several jobs, pilot for example, where you're responsible for less lives than the POTUS....

Because there are just some things meant to be kept private within a family, and it seems the only reason he is not keeping it private is to profit off it.

Ron Jr. was seldom in the White House and had very little to do with his parents while Reagan was president. He wasn't close enough to his father to know anything about him.

What a completely uniformed statement.

AND, Michael Reagan has been suckling at the teet of his father's legacy his whole life.

If Reagan was mentally ill during his presidency it is important for history to know this.
