According to his son's new book. He was diagnosed 5 years after leaving office which means he was probably in early stages while in office. Does it matter? Should we insist on full medical disclosure from a President once a year? From reading it is obvious FDR's decisions were affected by his illness late in his last term......How does the country protect itself from a mentally ill President?

Not. The president has a team to take care of affairs. If he is too much of a liability, they - or someone - will arrange for his assassination.

I'm not sure what you have been reading but as far as I know FDR's health problems were physical, not mental.

I guess you could make the argument that physical problems create mental stress but to say he was mentally ill is a huge stretch.

It is so nice to see that no thread on this board is untouched by craziness anymore.

I think it's time to summon the other members of the lunatic trio to get their input.

Well the only way to actually prove someone has alzheimers is with an autopsy, so I guess we would have to cut their heads open right after the election to be sure.

Early stages of Dementia can be identified a lot better these days than in the past. I don't think you need to saw a head open.....

His policies were simplistic and irrational when he took office. Had to see how this could make it any worse.

You do if you want to positively identify it as alzheimers. Now that doesn't mean that they can't guess at it. They do on a regular basis and treat it.  But if they want to be sure, cutting is the only option at this point.

That does not surprise me in the least, as when we were allowed to take the piss out of politicians, the following video told us all we needed to know about Reagan ;

An interview with Ronald Reagan

I think this has to be all taken in context.

Little Ronnie has made a career of being the son of Big Ronnie.

He has accomplished nothing on his own and has spent his life riding on Daddy's coattails.

Personally, I have always found him to be disgusting and this just reaffirms my view.

I think a son knows a father a lot more than other people know that father. I don't think it has been blown out of proportion. When I have seen Ron Reagan speak it has been honest and truthful....which is the problem for folks like you that want to put Reagan on a pedastal.

Not that he couldn't get by on those striking good looks.

This happens when radar beams lob the head-  It made Reagan forgetful,  it made Bush dumb(er) and the beams have currently been turning Obamas hair grey.   You can tell it is effecting his spine- when you see his legs- which are frail.

While I agree with you about Ron Reagan, I was stationed in D.C. towards the end of the Reagan administration and had a fair amount of contact with serevicemen who worked in the WH. Stories of Reagan being confused or asleep were rampant. Some were certainly exagerartion but the rumors likely had some kernel of truth at the source.

Loving this new tone from ya'll. You're a credit to the spirit of President Obama's address the other night. [8|]

Indeed, it was well known at the time of his reign; even in The Netherlands. Anyone with a little bit of sense could extrapolate from it that he was not quite present.

Please give me the link that provides backup that polio produces mental illness?

That is a completely new one on me.

As for the "bombshell", the extrapolation was made when it was his diagnosis was made public. It isn't news.

The newsworthy element is that had a diagnosis been possible sooner, his son believes Ronald Reagan, the President, would have stepped down.

There is nothing "disgusting" in that revelation.

edit: perfectionism

TBH, Reagan is most well known to some over here as 'the senile potus' .Can't see this article shocking anyone.
