Yeah. Let's not. Leaving yesterday would be better.

When the honorable Senator from South Carolina is having his own family members separated from him continually, maybe I'll consider his opinion.

Seconded.

The problem with the Taliban is that they don't really care how long the West stays.

Having air bases doesn't really achieve much if you can't really walk about in the country without either getting blown up or shot. It's a lose lose situation and always has been. When you think of how many have died of IED's it's a tragedy really. We just seem to send them there to walk about in plain sight expecting an open fight when it was never going to be like that. Training and external support to the Afghan administration should have been the game plan a lot earlier on.

If any military leader is saying a permanent presence in Afghanistan would be beneficial then I just wonder what they've been learning after all these years.

I was for the war in Afganistan in the very beginning. However, now all we are doing is wasting lives and money. Its time to end this bogus war.I thought the whole idea was to get rid of Al-Qaeda.Its clear they dont want freedom over there. Its time to go.

A permanent base in Afghanistan would be a flashpoint for decades to come.

Whatever the strategic plan is for the region, an unending American presence shouldn't be part of it.

The problem is that no administration wants to be known as the one that conceded Afghanistan.  So they lose more lives and money and kick the can down the road.  We need someone with balls, like the doofus that got us into this mess in the first place.

Why do the ones with cojones have such bad judgment?

Afghanistan turned out to be one of the last nails in the coffin of the Soviet Empire.

Will Afghanistan do a repeat performance with the American Empire? One way to find out is to stay there - but is it a question that the American people really want answered?

How long before the West realises that the people of the Middle East/Central Asia do not want Western interference in the running of their countries? That there will be trouble and warfare as long as Western armies remain in the region? There always has been, there always will be.

How long before we accept that the question of which armies and governments operate in the Middle Eastern countries is a question for the local people to decide? That it is not a decision to be made in the West by Westerners? That the best question for Westerners to consider is how quickly we can extract our armies permanently.

Hahaha, I thought that too, back in the beginning, Afghanistan lead to trhe warsaw pact breaking up, will the same happen with Nato, and with that, Russia ceasing to be the threat it was, maybe the same will apply to America. Western forces have not learned from the Russian occupation, Afghanistan is the proving ground that has broken many armies in the past.

But as an American led invasion, is Vietnam being repeated here and with that, screw this one up, do you not think it is about time you gave up with military intervention in other countries, as every time the US is involved, it is always a messy result.

Maybe bankrolling a few of the warlords to hassle the Taliban might work. That was the last approach an occupying force took that actually did any good, after all. (Back around the turn of the twentieth century. There's a fine book by Kipling about what was going on back then...)

A proper Empire like the British once had would be really cool. The we could make all sorts of Star Wars type jokes when the Empire strikes back at those towel-heads.

You mean like Reagan bankrolled Osama bin Laden to fight the Soviets?

That worked well........

Afghanistan hasn't been properly subjugated for any significant period of time in its history - sooner or later the invader always gives it up as a bad job.

I generally work on the basis that, if the Red Army can't kick the shit out of a nation then it's probably worth avoiding as a bad job ;)

The moment the pull-out's complete it'll start turning back to where it was before, except this time we'll have really pissed people off. We'll be reaping the results of the cock-up that was the invasion of Afghanistan for decades, maybe longer.

Nice one George W, you utter fuckwit.

I was thinking more of Vickie funding the lot who were causing the Russians trouble in the 1890s, but fair point.

Steven, must be the same for S. Korea and Japan as well.
We've had Troops in those countries for 60 years now! If that isn't "Empire" I don't know what is.
Boy, that Lindsey Graham is an idiot!
I voted against him last time and I'll vote against him next time!

Popeye, there's a huge difference between outright occupying a country, and having a few military bases in one.
