LadyPact -> Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 6:38:11 PM)

My husband and I were having this conversation the other day.  It might interest others.

We were discussing the subject of atheists on Christmas.  It was his position that atheists still get into the gift giving/receiving thing.  At that time, I had to tell him, no.  That I had never once received a Christmas gift from an atheist.  A Buddist, yes.  Jewish folks who just called them Hanukkah gifts, sure.  Never from a self-proclaimed atheist.

Would anyone like to share a different experience?

I've exchanged Christmas cards with atheist friends all my life. They're atheists, ferchrissake, not frothing ideologues. Personally, I would be greatly pleased if the people who constantly bitch about Christmas having become a secular holiday, and the people who constantly bitch because it's not, would just shut the fuck up and let the rest of us (atheists included) enjoy a happy time of the year.

Yes, I'm an atheist. I celebrate Christmas like everyone else. I put up a Christmas tree buy gifts for loved ones. Wish people a merry Christmas. I just use the holiday to celebrate family and friends.

Wait a minute...is this just a way for you to solicit for more presents?[:)]

Yup, several different atheists actually. One atheist friend sends me a Hanukkah card every year because she knows it matters to me. Another has been giving me Christmas/Hanukkah just about every year since we met as freshmen in college. Last year, to support my conversation she even went out and bought seven (she forgot how many nights there are in Hanukkah) little gifts and wrapped them up separately so I had a different one to open night.

While I'm sure there are some atheists who don't give gifts this time of year it's not something I've experienced. A lot of us just suck at sending cards but, as far as I know, no one deliberately avoids cards/gifts because they are atheist. Broke, forgetful and/or lazy yes. Atheist no. What some people in my circles have taken to doing is that, instead calling them *insert religious holiday here* gifts, we present our packages with a smile and a "Happy gift-giving season! I saw this and just had to get it for you!". [:)]

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 7:24:52 PM)

I have received, and have given gifts to friend/family members of different faiths.  I just stuck it in their hands and wished them a happy whatever they celebrated.

Jeffff -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 7:42:36 PM)

LP, I am an atheist. I give and receive gifts to and from all sorts of folks. While I am not a militant atheist, I can't say I notice much of a difference in how people are at this time of year.

Most folks want the same thing really. Happiness, peace in their lives if not the world and something that resembles love.

I don't think you need to believe in a god to want these things. I think that often the season brings out the better angles of our nature.

Religious reference intended..:)

littlewonder -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 8:21:50 PM)

Unfortunately  I know and have a lot of atheists around me that I know and not a single one celebrates holidays of any kind whatsoever in any way and will actually go out of their way to make sure you're quite aware of just how much they detest holidays and their religious meanings.

Jeffff -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 9:30:39 PM)

That is a shame. I see no reason for anyone to force their viewpoint on another.

In real life, I seldom talk about it. If someone has something that brings them a little comfort, who am I to kick that around.

BurntKitty -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/23/2010 9:37:28 PM)

I celebrate the Solstice. No matter how many times I've let people know, they still think I'm christian. Meh, I let it roll off my back, unless they insist on "saving" me.
Joyous Solstice, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Festivus for the rest of us.

Peace & love...

BK

So far I've received Christmas cards from Jews, Hindus, Moslems, and of course returned the sentiment. To my knowledge I don't know any atheists, but by law of averages, I've probably been wished a happy Christmas by a few over the years.

Christmas/Hannukah/Solstice/whatever wishes to all my CM friends, from your resident lagomorphic atheist! [:D]

Everyone has the rights to their own belief, and I believe I am human enough to support them in their beliefs without forcing my own views down their throats.

Although my favourite greeting is....HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!

tazzygirl -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 2:59:07 AM)

My son used to call it... Happy Scrooge Day!

myotherself -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 3:01:45 AM)

that made me giggle [:D]

If we're going to be like this fine.

OK we know Jesus was not born on Dec. 25th, I mean even the most sheeplest know that. Actually some historian put the real date sometime in April or June, something like that. But then the calendar......... but then they claim they have it perfectly adjusted......big deal. The Earth is flat right ?

Boiling it down, of course it was going to coincide with Pagan rituals. But but but, Odinists were/are Pagans, and they indeed celebrated the winter solistace. However now Odinists are considered a racist group. Indeed they were tribal in a way, just look at their "Charges" which is the equivalent of the Ten Commandments. Look and it is easy to see that they were quite clanish, possibly xenophobic almost, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a learned trait. They may have had some bad experiences. Because of the clanish nature they are somewhat shunned.

Now let's compare Christians, hold their feet to the same fire. Ever hear of the Holy Wars ? Odinists just wanted to live in harmony with nature, and their religion reflected that. The Wiccan belief is similar. But Christians not only NEED you to belive, if you refuse they might kill you. I know of no acts by Wiccans or Odinists of that nature. Can we conclude then that Christians are even more clanish ? That is up to each of us.

The founding Fathers of this nation wanted us to be separate, the Odinists wanted to be separate. The Odinists did some wrongs, but they can only be forgiven if they convert ? What, they did whatever the fuck they wanted in the first place, so what. So did everybody. But they're wrong and those who send troops to gain converts by force are alright.

What you witness now is the result of a millenium of wars at least. D.C. Al fine. And the final solution is at hand.

Joy to the world, while there's time.

Are you sure these are atheists? They sound more like Jehovah's Witnesses...

I'm sorry, but that is such a heap of crap I'm unsure where to start.
Odinism is a '60s thing (though it takes its title from a book that was published in the 'thirties), with no collection to the now long dead nordic pagan religions that have been deader than a very dead dodo for the best part of a thousand years. Just because the self righteous neopagans who are into that bollocks like to claim an ancient and noble history of their sacred knowledge being suppressed by the evil Christians doesn't make it any truer than (say) Gardner's claim that it was only his Wiccan coven's magickal workings that prevented Britain's invasion during the second world war, or Ike's insistance that the planet is run by a cabal of alien lizards.

My ex is an atheist and she celebrated Christmas right along with the rest of my family. Gave me presents and had no problems receiving her own.

I'm agnostic and I give Xmas presents if it's important for the people (like my parents) but to be honest personally I prefer to see something that the person would like and just get it for him or her, not wait until there's a holiday for gift giving. I sometimes joke with friends that it's their xmas gift, even if it is in August. I'm somebody who tends to even forget her own bday, I like giving gifts but I rather do spur of the moment than finding something, hiding it for months and then giving them, or searching like crazy before xmas and buying into "xmas, must shop, must spend..." it seems less caring and more of an expected action...
