The christmas advertising season is definitely getting longer. It used to be pretty uniformly kept to the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now it has creeped out so that I see christmas ads right after Halloween.

You are kidding? the first ones I noticed were in early SEPTEMBER, getting back from surfing, the last thing I wanted to think of were Xmas presents and trees....

Everyone is getting in on the act even the national lottery. They ran an ad about how good it could be to get your loved ones a bit of paper that'll probably be nothing more than a bit of paper. You aren't just buying a scratch card you are buying the chance to dream.

I am an atheist, and I give presents, and my friend is also an atheist and she gives presents. I focous on the wishing others to have enjoyable things and a present, not the religious glub that religions try to fill the holiday up with.

My husband and I were having this conversation the other day.  It might interest others.

We were discussing the subject of atheists on Christmas.  It was his position that atheists still get into the gift giving/receiving thing.  At that time, I had to tell him, no.  That I had never once received a Christmas gift from an atheist.  A Buddist, yes.  Jewish folks who just called them Hanukkah gifts, sure.  Never from a self-proclaimed atheist.

Would anyone like to share a different experience?

Becareful of what you claim people know. I know nothing of the sort, and I don't care when Jesus was supposedly or was born either. I'm just saying thats where you go wrong when you include essentially  the phrase every body knows..........

If we're going to be like this fine.

OK we know Jesus was not born on Dec. 25th, I mean even the most sheeplest know that. T

Methinks you are joking, or at least I hope you are. Those friend and colleagues of mine that are atheists are no less generous with family, friends and charities than the theists.

No, I actually wasn't joking, but I did have to come back to the thread during it's course to admit that I was wrong.  It's My own fault because I hadn't really been thinking which of My friends were atheists.  I tend not to debate belief or non belief in God all that much, so My first thought of people that I care about isn't about their views on the subject.  I should have been more conscientious.
