Are you sure these are atheists?

Of course they're not atheists. An atheist would feel embarrassed to be associated with them. What they are is hateful little twerps who believed in the Tooth Fairy everrrr so sincerely, until she didn't leave a quarter under their pillow one night, and now they hate her and think anybody who believes in her is stoopid and needs to be told so as often as possible at any opportunity.

My husband and I were having this conversation the other day.  It might interest others.

We were discussing the subject of atheists on Christmas.  It was his position that atheists still get into the gift giving/receiving thing.  At that time, I had to tell him, no.  That I had never once received a Christmas gift from an atheist.  A Buddist, yes.  Jewish folks who just called them Hanukkah gifts, sure.  Never from a self-proclaimed atheist.

Would anyone like to share a different experience?

Being anti-capitalist and pro free enterprise athiest I send christmas, hanukka, quanza and festivus cards to all. The booty thus reaped is then put on ebay.
For those of like mind I would note that the hand lettered usps delivered type bring much more booty than e-cards[;)]

Ah, self righteous zealots.
That's a very nice way of putting that, btw. I'll have to remember that description.

I am not religious, yet I love the gift giving season and I fully and happily embrace it and feel that people should follow whatever it is that gives them peace.  If it gives them peace to give me some trinkets, I am all for it.

Lucylastic -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 5:49:13 AM)

I celebrate the way I want to, I give gifts to my loved ones,  I celebrate christmas as a tradition of goodwill, love and sharing.
Holidays wether wholly christian or masked as "heathen" its all my personal choice.
I care and share year round, btu I do love the traditions of  christmas and I wont be put off by anyone who says I shouldnt celebrate a "christian holiday" as a non believer
HAH Bumhug
Have a wonderful Festivus one and all

no they're atheists.

I do know Jehovah's Witnesses also who do the same thing but the ones I was speaking of are self proclaimed atheists who also proclaim to be anarchists. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile or more. Give them a chance and they'll go on to tell you how all governments of the world are corrupt and everything in the world is based on Christian beliefs including our calendar and everything should all be destroyed.

Yeah...fun people. <groan>

Have you ever been in the same zip code as a history book written for someone over the age of 12?

littlewonder -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 6:52:17 AM)

I was going to tell you about where I live but then I realized I'm in the politics forum...not worth the response but thanks for your response anyway.

Wow, LadyP. I'm going to have to agree with your husband. The angriest, most militant atheist I know is presently having a ball, steeping his young kids in the full spectrum of the American secular holiday called Christmas. Going by the Facebook pictures, he had more fun taking them to see Santa, than they did sitting on the hairy guy's lap.

If it's got holiday in the title I celebrate it.

allthatjaz -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 8:55:49 AM)

People celebrate Christmas for different reasons and you don't have to believe in anything to enjoy a once a year celebration that brings all of your loved ones together.
I don't think of Christmas as a Christian celebration because the 25th of December is not only celebrated by Christians but by Pagans too and Paganism was around long before Christianity.
Yule was the traditional name for the celebrations around what Christians now call Christmas. The festivals lasted for twelve days, which Christians now call the twelve days of Christmas. The origin of the word Yule originates from the Anglo Saxon word for sun and light. This comes from the rebirth of the sun from the shortest day on the 21st December. Ancient Pagans and Pagans of today will light candles for 12 days and burn a Yule log at sunset on the 25th of December.
Many symbols of Christmas come from the older Pagan religion.
Holly is a male symbol and Ivy a feminine symbol. Mistletoe is sacred to the druids and can be traced back to Celtic times.
Christians adopted the 25th of December as the birth of Christ around the 3rd or 4th century AD because it was a way of amalgamating this with the older Pagan festival of the sun.

That posting makes me appreciate my friends...

ETA: Even more

LadyPact -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 10:27:05 AM)

That might just be it, Lady C.  They are all friends first and the friendships have been the higher priority.

Now that I've thought about it, I've been entirely wrong.

(Hey, it happens on occasion.  Don't tell My other half.  [8D])

To All, Merry Christmas or whatever term of good wishes you would like, from My household to yours.

allthatjaz -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 10:54:22 AM)

Same to you and yours Lady P.

gungadin09 -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 10:59:03 AM)

i'm an atheist, and i give and receive gifts. Hell, i've been known to go to midnight mass on occasion! A ritual is a ritual, and a gift is a gift, no matter what the reason behind it is. Besides, it's fun.

DomKen -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 2:30:25 PM)

I'm an atheist and I give gifts at this time of year, mostly to children of my relatives and friends. I also always participated in secret santa at my workplace. I do discourage people from giving me gifts and those that do I've mostly gotten to make donations in my name to some charity they like.

For the adults in my life I much prefer to give them nice presents on their birthdays. I think it shows I care about them and that it wasn't some seasonal duty.

I will admit that I get burned out by the commercialization of Christmas just after Halloween most years so that may affect my desire to give and/or receive gifts at this time of year.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Have you ever received..... (12/24/2010 2:43:35 PM)

As long as I can remember Christmas was commercial, although I keep hearing it is getting more commercial.

It's a bit of a cliché to say it's getting more commercial, are people still making their gifts by hand out of wood? The thing that always threw me was how Santa could make a Sony PS# for less than Sony. He must be based in China.

The christmas advertising season is definitely getting longer. It used to be pretty uniformly kept to the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now it has creeped out so that I see christmas ads right after Halloween.
