No amount of sympathy for her ordeal will bring her back but more importantly, no amount of sympathy and shock, horror or disgust will help a single person that has been raped, is raped in the future or successfully kills themselves over that incident.

For me, 'public outrage' is a different sort of thing to 'private outrage'.  It implies outrage by governments, in particular.  I think that's needed before policies are put into place to prevent so many rapes occurring in the future, and to deal with their aftermath properly.

Oh I'm sure it helps alota people balance out their brain chemicals
but this gal didn't seem to have a chemical imbalance, it seemed to be induced by her ordeal, so why would any one prescribe her something that could be lethal?not saying she couldn't find some other way to do herself in,just find it a lil ironic that a doctor would prescribe something like this to her in this particular case.

but hell, who am I to say what they shoulda done, I'm just a clown
just saw some irony, you know

kinda feel we're playing some sort of morbid arm chair quarterback here

Again, we don't know when she began taking the effexor.
She may have been on it prior to her rape.

Also, sometimes when someone experiences a traumatic event it does make one's neurochemistry get off balance and in that case an antidepressant could be very appropriate treatment.

So to recap: we don't know what symptoms she was presenting and we don't know when she actually began taking the effexor.

Like I said, I'm a clown
but still, sounds like a prescription of "stayaweekwithmomandpop" may have been more effective regardless

my point was, as a rape survivor, that the debate was over whether an overdose of a medication can kill and the use of the medication. not that a major university is shielding a grown man from possible prosecution because he plays a kids game the university makes a bundle on.

and yes, for those of you who question it, a traumatic event can change brain chemistry. that's how i ended up on antidepressants, i was beaten and raped. i also was in therapy after the event, and the combination made a big difference in the outcome for me. it's a shame she may have felt she was getting no support from the authorities and was less important to the university than the jock who allegedly raped her.

edited for spelling

I take Effexor....it has saved me from myself.  I'm not the suicidal type, but rather, I was very angry, often without even knowing why.  It wouldn't take  anything to set me off....the computer running slow, the radio messing up, stoopid trooper moments......I'd never see it coming, however, I'd be yelling at the computer and smacking the monitor and throwing pens and clipboards.  Scared the crap out of me and my co-workers.  I had a meltdown over something really minor, and it woke me up.  I was on Effexor and Buspar (anti-anxitey drug) and I also went to a therapist.

I got off the Buspar after about 6 months, but I will NEVER give up my effexor.  I will not go back to the way my life was then......the anger, the negativity, I won't do it.  I did find out that both my mother and middle sister are on meds, have been for over 20 years.  Knowing what I know now, I'm pretty sure the youngest sister should be on something too, but she's still doing drugs that would mess up the meds.  My mom has been known to give my dad some of her Xanax when he gets "in a mood".  For us, it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  The first time they came in off the road from trucking, my Dad sunk into a huge blue funk.....I was really worried about him.  Not that he'd commit suicide, but he's one of those guys that if he quits working, he'll die.  They are back on the road, and he's okay.

It is a shame that the poor girl felt that she only had one choice.  The system failed her, as it often does for rape victims.  I hope the bastard that did it rots in hell.
