http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/11/25/notre-dames-shameful-punt-in-the-probe-of-lizzy-seebergs-sad-d/

Elizabeth "Lizzy" Seeberg was a college freshman with a wide-open smile – here is a heartbreaking photo of her in spaghetti straps and pearls – who built houses with Habitat for Humanity and hoped to become a nurse. Lizzy also suffered from depression, and 10 days after telling friends and campus cops that she'd been sexually assaulted by a University of Notre Dame football player, rape crisis volunteers who knew she had missed a counseling session found her barely breathing in her dorm room./snip

That is sad and a loss. I think that such drugs ought to be prohibited, especially Effexor as that medication is worse than the affliction: its secondary metabolite causes depression, necessitating more of the drugs, so it is worse and more addictive than heroin.

Alarmist claptrack about Effexor. you can overdose with anything, Effexor isn't 'more addictive than heroin', and anti-depressants help a lot of people.
Sleeping pills on the other hand are addictive and easily overdosed, so have a go at them.

Please... enlighten us by providing the peer-reviewed published clinical studies that support your accusations. Or are you just one of those people that think people just need to get over their depression and not use antidepressants, despite numerous studies that prove their effectiveness? Well.... I'm waiting....

You know what? Working from memory I erred - and I apologize for that.

I confused Efexor with Trazadone. I quote from results of my research:
quote:

one of Trazodone’s second phase metabolites – mCPP – causes anxiety and depression.

One source that I just now googled is "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Theory, Research, and Treatment", page 145:
quote:

... compared with healthy controls, patients exhibited greater changes in other behavioral variables (e.g., increases in anxiety and depression) following mCPP administration.

oh hell if it wasn't for trazadone I would have never made it through my daughter's problems when she lived at home. She went through a major bout of psychological problems and trazadone was absolutely a lifesaver for her. Sure when she was first started using it she was like a zombie but with the right dosage finally found it helped her through sleepless nights and to help calm down her mind.

Sure it can be addictive. Anything can be addictive. She is not the addictive personality type so she hasn't had any problems with trazadone. She still takes it when she can't sleep or has an anxiety attack.

As for effexor, both of us have tried it and it personally didn't work for either of us. The story that went with the post is sad but I don't see what it has to do with the anti-depressant. She could have taken any drug and overdosed. The story is tragic that no one listened to the girl's rape accusations. Unfortunately this happens a lot with women and it's horrible that authorities just ignore such pleas for help.

This story isn't about Effexor, it's about how she was treated after her assault.

Please read aloud to me the title of this thread?

pahunkboy -> RE: lethal dose of the anti-depressant Effexor (11/27/2010 3:55:25 AM)

I had not thought effexxor to be something to choose to OD over.

That right there.

Some of these kids (I don't care about legal age) who are a part of this wave that are committing suicide, give Me the impression that they just want to be heard.  They see the news coverage that others receive and want that to be duplicated in their own death.  For some of them, it's the only way that they think people are paying attention.

anniezz338 -> RE: lethal dose of the anti-depressant Effexor (11/27/2010 5:48:25 AM)

I would think you could OD on any anti-depressant if you take enough of them. I was on effexor for a while and it worked great for me, when taken as directed.

I agree with some others. The issue was she did not deal with the assault. I feel you can go get anti-depressants all day long but for something that tramatic, therapy would have been main thing needed and the effexor a suppliment to that.

This is the first time I heard of a suicide by effexxor.

But not the first time I heard of a rape, or a suicide.

How hard did you look? I just googled Effoxor and it lists many pages about this being a suicide related drug.

I been on it for 10 years.... and I never tried to kill myself.

Hunkie,

I don't think the drug itself had anything to do with her suicide.  It was just the vehicle she used.

All antidepressants carry the risk for suicidal behaviors, actually.
The reason is the same.
Person is very depressed and is prescibed an anti-depressant.
Person begins to feel better and has regained some of the function that was lost due to depression.
Person is still depressed as the medication has not yet reached the full level (that can take 6-8 weeks).
However, now that the person is more functional, they can actually put together a plan for suicide, whereas before they began said medication their depression was so great that they could not.

And yes, as I read the article I did not read it as the effexor caused the suicide.
We don't know how long she had been on it.

It was the hopelessness of something horrendous happening to her and no one who was in a position of power was taking any action on her behalf.
That devalued her rights and her.
That made her feel more victimised and feel betrayed and wholly unimportant.
She didn't matter.

Everyday she encountered the fact that the football hero was being protected and no one was trying to protect her.
She was the villian and it never should have been that way.

Anyone cared to read the bumf that comes with anti depressent medication, one of the side effects is the very reason one is taking the drug in the first place.  The idea is one just does not give someone a pile of pills and tells them to get on with it, for depressive issues can only be countered by a combination of therapies all together. As how is a condition to be monitored if no one sees or helps the afflicted, for the meds don't work on their own for everyone.

allthatjaz -> RE: lethal dose of the anti-depressant Effexor (11/27/2010 11:09:41 AM)

Not all depressed people are suicidal but for those that are, I agree that medications such as antidepressants should be given with caution and back up help. I recently had a fairly deep conversation with a friend of mine who is diagnosed as bi-polar. I asked him if he had ever thought of suicide and he looked me straight in the eye and said 'no, not ever' and I believe him.
A good friend once said to me 'at least once a week I start to make plans on how to kill myself. Can you imagine what that's like?' I couldn't but I know some people do. She eventually killed herself.
Certain people are more prone to suicidal tendencies, whilst others are not.
Antidepressants don't kill people, they just aid them in there quest to die.
