It wasn't a B'day celebration so much as it was a nearly week-long Bacchanalia. I didn't drink all that much back then (went through a time where I did drink quite a bit; expensive wines, mostly Zins, Rhones, Burgundies, and esoteric whites like Condrieu and Loires and interesting German Rheingaus and Mosels)(alcohol is a pretty coarse and harsh drug, IMO). Pot and psychedelics, primarily. I was in the Fan District in Richmond, VA then (a few blocks from VCU, a big arts Uni); brownstones, cobblestone sidewalks, some gas lights, lots of people like me. A bunch of friends had a party for me. Live band in a huge place on Monument Ave. with a ballroom in it. I got waylaid by a chick who was into ass-fucking and watersports. Had a little wine, a couple reds, smoked some herb, very fine night. Next night was a smaller party, where I got waylaid by a chick I'd been playing with off and on for a couple months. Very cool visual - doing her from behind with an eggplant while whipping her ass with my belt. That was a weed/MDA night. Next day was a concert in Monroe Park, across from the Mosque. Smoked some more herb, had a little wine, got kidnapped by another chick I'd been playing with for a while. We hung out for a couple days, going to a couple parties and doing a LOT of 69-ing (a favorite sport of mine). AFter that, I hitched up to Woodstock, VA, where my "brother" and tripping buddy Andrew was visiting his parents, and some HS friends, for a couple weeks. His buddy Robert had a connection in DC to a chick at Georgetown U with a pH.D in Chemistry. She was putting LSD on paper towels that were either 1000 or 2000 mcg. per square. Very early. primitive blotter. Andrew and I split a 2000 about dusk, got a ride up to the top of the "mountain" closest to his folks and Robert's house, and we walked down. It started getting interesting about 1/2 way down. We ended up at Robert's house doing an impromptu bong contest. I was way off in the Andromeda galaxy by then. We walked back to hos folks' house, where I was chased up a tree by a 52 gallon barrel that looked amazingly like a Bull. Hit the Yellow Brick Road, the flagstone curved path up to the house, which turned into an endless spiral populated by all sorts of interesting creatures. We got to the house, where I was in no condition to talk to his mother. Andrew tells me his mother offered me some OJ, and I supposedly said, "Can't. It'll give me an acid stomach." Some of you might get that. Had some herb bread that Andrew had made, finally wound down, crashed, and woke up refreshed, clear-headed, and serenely calm and at peace the next day. One of my best trips.
Here's a weird coincidence (and a terrible tragedy). Robert and his buddy Greg's (IIRC; I can't remember shit anymore. It's the opioids  ) girlfriend were riding in Greg's van near Tyson's Corner, VA. Don't remember her name, offhand. She was in the back, and had rolled a joint. Robert turned around to take the joint, they went through a red light, and ran into another car. Robert broke his back. The girl was terminal; she had a fatal head injury. My stepbrother, who was living in Falls Church, was first on the scene. He held her head while she died. Both Robert and Greg ended up ODing on smack. The guilt and the loss.
