Ahh nothing like a good Charlie Heston quote to bring a smile to ones face

Yep, when I bought my first house when I was 20, I pre-planned my funeral.

However, after another 23 years tacked on I need to re-vamp it.  I own two cemetery plots in California.
I've even fully paid for an entire funeral.  At this stage in life I don't think I would like to be strictly in California so
I guess you could say I have evolved.  Now, I want to be cremated a party thrown and ashes scattered places all over the globe that I favor.

I'd have to imagine not many plan for their demise?  Yet when you go to enough funerals and if you are a caring person.  You've got to look at those you love and want to make their lives a bit easier when that time comes.

splorff -> RE: Have you made plans? (8/4/2010 10:32:03 AM)

I dont want to be cremated. It's a waste of gas. I would rather it was used to keep folks warm in wintertime. I dont want to be buried in religious ground either. Thats just as expensive. Neither do I want a sea burial. I might get hauled up by trawling tackle.

I dont want anyone paying £1000 for a coffin either. Winding sheets will be fine by me. This is what I fancy. No coffin, no marker and just plant a tree on top of me. It can be had for about £500.

In this world we never know where we will end up.  I have had to walk away from the stage and get a real job with insurance benefits.

So now I'm working for a cemetery helping people pre-plan their final wishes.

I never really thought about it, but now after seeing the grief people go through when a loved ones dies and having to make all the arrangements, I understand the reason to pre plan everything

So have you made your arrangements?  I'm not looking for any business, just curious about people here if they have thought about it

You know the government has plans for your remains

Remember that British guy who lived in the US. He did his "letter from America" on radio for years and years. It was very popular over here.

He died in the US. Some fucker somehow managed to steal some of his bones. I never found out why anyone would want some cancerous old bones.

You're right some fucker did have plans for his remains..

I seriously doubt there's going to be anything left that will be of any use to anyone other than a scientist, but, I'm all for research, they can have at it, I'll be done with it!

Savage, you are such an exhibitionist and so animated. I bet you get up and dance naked when the med students gather around your corpse!

splorff -> RE: Have you made plans? (8/4/2010 10:53:31 AM)

Lets make our own, I bet its a great lil coffee table while we're waiting to pop the cloggs.

Great conversation starter, and we could recycle too, just rummage some old ply out of a dumpster.

I want to be cremated and then taken out with the trash. I would get buried without any sort of embalming or casket if I could so I would go directly back to the ecosystem. I also am attracted to excarnation, which is basically being carrion for wild critters.. they do not allow us to that in this country, so... I am stuck with cremation.

If someone wants to do something nice for me after I kick the bucket they could start a scholarship for single moms in my name, or something...

What I do not want is for some funeral parlor to dress my dead rotting corpse up for some sort of "she looks so life-like" analysis by all my friends and loved ones. Make my disposal cheap and easy as possible, thank you very much! My kid knows my feelings about this, and it is nice to know mom doesn't want some fuss made over her.. no hassles and no worries. In fact, if he can sell my body to science, he should...

i do have plans. I just havent bothered to tell anyone yet.[8|]

housesub4you -> RE: Have you made plans? (8/4/2010 11:32:03 AM)

All I can say is take care of your wishes NOW, cause when you are dead it is to late.  Want to be thrown out with the trash, no problem, burned to a crisp, can do, just take care of it first cause it's not about You when you die, it's the people left who have to make all the choices for you.   Because the last place for a grieving person to be is in some office the day after you die making all  these choices.  Pre plan that way you know and are in control  And think how easy it is to take care of now

Missokyst -> RE: Have you made plans? (8/4/2010 11:38:49 AM)

Ideally, I would want to be tossed into a shark feeding frenzy.  I can't see my organs being worth anything.  Burial is a disgusting thought when you are claustrophobic so that is out.  I am with Julia up there with feeling distaste on having my body dressed up so I look life-like.  If I am dead I don't need any validation that I once lived.  Cremation is equally odious and seems like a waste of energy.  At least in the ocean I can provide food for predators and bottom feeders.  Getting someone to do that for me is another story.

Preplanning means prepaying.... If you have extra cash laying around, by all means, prepay. You are beginning to sound a bit like someone attempting to sell your services here.

I have life insurance that covers the cost of burning me, but it is not as complicated as you are making it out to be. We had both my father and my stepfather cremated. They both wanted this done. They did not make a "pre plan", and it was not traumatic

On the other hand, my best buddy is catholic and her mom had all these plans that were not officially made, from flowers to music, to the church, etc... and my friend had to deal with that... that was traumatic.

I think the level of planning one needs to do is dependent on how complicated you want to make it. Sticking me in an oven and putting me in a paper carton, not complicated. In fact, it is easy peasy... been there and done that with a family member.

It is a waste of energy. I looked into being more natural about my remains and I found out there are strict laws which prevent it.

Well- I am just glad you are not selling aluminum siding.

housesub4you -> RE: Have you made plans? (8/4/2010 12:14:47 PM)

The only thing is, One I'm not selling you anything, 2 .true it can be taken care of after you die, the problem is who ever is left has to have the cash on hand that day.  It is not me it is the industry, AT need , is cash and bury.  Pre plan allows you to get what you want where you want for the money you want.

I work for  a cemetary, but I have nothing do with 99.9 % of the people who die everyday, is it wise to pre plan YES I could really care less where you do it, But do not blame me because when a death occurs there is a huge bill that must be paid before they are put to rest, you pay for car insurance, home owners insurance, for things that MAY occur, but death will occur and people choose to not plan ahead.

I a just starting out in this business and let me tell you, the is a huge difference between pre need and AT need burials.  Pre need 20 minutes in the offcie and goodbye, be with your family, At need several hours going through all the paperwork, like the choosing the grave site, burial type, and other things  so if you choose to do nothing, fine, but do not think the chance is not there to take care of it before hand and Hell it cost less to pre plan

My parents who are in their early 80's made all of their arrangments several years ago. They didn't want to burden anyof the kids with the emotional or financial decisions. Paid for in advance and they will do it their way.

Oh how I wish my parents would do this! They are both in their 80's as well but simply refuse to make plans. Their financials are taken care of through their will but none of their personal possessions are designated (four daughters) nor do they have any funeral plans.

When I ask I get "I will be dead, so I won't care" which makes me very sad. They seem to be setting us up for some vicious fighting, who gets what from mothers jewelry? Their art collection? Their book collection? Worst of all my mother went through that herself when her grandmother died and wound up with only a houseplant to remember her by.

I really don't understand why they are doing it this way.

Yes I've a will and a living will. Even though I'm not married and haven't children it just seems like the 'normal' thing to do.

Oops I forgot to add: I'm going to try to convince my sisters that we should turn my mother into a diamond for each of us. It is very fitting for her personality! Plus I just think it is totally cool.

oh hell....why would i care? As long as my loved ones follow my directive on organ donation i wont come back and haunt their ass.

Face it...when we die we are DEAD! Funerals are for the living, so let them plant my ass in a way that makes them happy and gives them peace and comfort.
