@Subgani- my other family member says the same thing.  The Domincian Republic is also up on all the 'green' ways to bring tourists to the island without destroying the ecosystem.

For the record - yes  -crime is everywhere - but I think its been since the 1970's since police stations were firebombed in the USA.

YEah, but not since schools were under gun fire, cops being killed in the line of duty, buildings were bombed, innocents killed in drive bys, terrorists trying to blow places up, people murdered for no apparent reason and gang activity that leads to violence along with mobs in the street, people who walk into a building and just shoot everyone they can.

Just sayin'

Now they're saying that gun battles are intensifying in Jamaica!

The line between drug lord and rebel leader is often blurry. Part of the reason he's managing to put up such a fight is that he's incredibly popular in his area, does more for the slummers than the government seems to. Either way, probably not the best time to visit uncle john.

Sheesh, now 30 more people killed in Jamaica.
There's much better places to go to down there! Try St. John's, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico.

OMG OMG OMG PANIC EVERYONE PANIC DON'T GO TO JAMAICA!!

Let me ask you this -- would you NOT go to Memphis, TN to see Graceland because of an unrest happening in Franklin, KY?  psst its approximately the same miles away as Kingston is from the West side of the Island.

Popeye, you do realize that unrest is pretty common in Kingston yes?  While this may be a little more newsworthy because its connected to the US because the US wants this guy, Kingston has always been a very violent city?  Or are you simply wigging out on the media hype?

i have spoken to my parents who are down there.  They are in fear of omg omg sunburn and spent the day hunched over sailing a sunfish.   And when they were on the owner's boat, they were terrified when they spotted dolphins frolicking in the sea.  And i could barely hear my mom when i spoke to her over the terrified laughter and socializing of the "return dinner" for returned Couples guests.

And yeah there is crap going on in Kingston but you may want to look at a map of Jamaica.  Even the news article stated this unrest is localized far from the tourist mecca on the other side of the island.

I am surprised you aren't posting the articles that say things like this:

"...both travel experts and officials from Jamaica's tourism industry said that as the situation stands now, visitors should feel little impact of the unrest if they stay in the island's most popular resort areas.
They include places like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, Port Antonio and the south coast, said John Lynch, Jamaica's director of tourism.
"People are having a great time there. We had a great weekend, most of the hotels were full," he said."

I didn't comment on your media panic post yesterday because i didn't want to believe you would really post this crap as a motive to dissuade people from going to a very impoverished country that DEPENDS HIGHLY on tourism.   But now i see that is exactly your motive and you should really be ashamed of yourself because you are trying to use something that is not and probably will not effect tourists there at all unless of course they are stupid enough to wanna go see what its all about.

Here's another quip about going to Jamaica:

"Should you go?
Travel agents emphasized that the capital is several hours away by car from the resort areas and that few travelers ever make the city a destination.
"It's virtually nonexistent on the tourist level," McCabe said. Most people who fly into Kingston visit friends and relatives or are there for business, she added.
Veith said she has never sent anyone to Kingston, calling it "not a good place to go." The city has a history of some unrest, added Brooke Ferencsik, a spokesman for TripAdvisor.com.
Travel experts urged travelers to Jamaica to follow the situation closely, but not to let the turmoil in Kingston automatically taint the rest of the island.
They compared the situation to recent violence in Mexico, which has been centered near the country's border with the United States but has affected tourism in Cancun and other popular spots far away from the unrest.
"It would be like me saying I can't go to the United States because there are murders in New York City," Veith said."

Believe me, my parents are actually down there, i would be the first to say don't go if this issue was going to effect anyone enjoying temselves in the resorts (where most people go) on the west side of the island.  Kingston is a long way from the west side of the island and anyone who knows anything about Kingston knows its always been a very violent city and many times has been a place of unrest not just this week.  A lot of why this is newsworthy is because the US wants this guy.
