I've posted a thread asking for advices for vacation destinations before.  My significant other and I have taken an interest to Jamaica.  Anybody have any advices or suggestions?  We are thinking about staying in Negril by the Seven Mile Beach.  Yes?  No?  Maybe?

My parents have been all over the world to all inclusive resorts and they prefer Jamaica especially Swept Away resort is AWESOME -- its part of the Couples all-inclusive resorts and is located in one of the more nicer areas of the 7 mile beach, its next to Beaches. I have been there many times and my parents go there a couple times a year since it opened. I can't speak as to many other resorts but i love the people at Swept Away. Its a more toned down resort more for a honeymoon seclusion than for people who like to party all the time. They do have entertainment after dinner at The Palms (main dining room) usually nightly. They have the "old" part of Swept Away which were rooms that were situated "hut" style in different levels so to speak -- beach front, atrium and garden -- i would shy away from garden personally, the "old part" rooms to a building two up and two down but Swept Away also has now built on a "hotel" style area where the rooms are situated like in a hotel. I prefer the old style but many people don't because they don't have TVs in them. The grounds are beautiful and they have i think 5 restuarants - main dining room, a awesome i love it thai restuarant above it, Feathers which is a formal type, another informal dining room on the other side of the resort near the hotel type area, and a grill type restaurant. Its a nice quite resort that is not so big its overwelming. But as i said, its not really for partiers. It has a night club area but nothing substantial so to speak. However the catamaran cruise is a lot of fun. They don't have jet ski's but they do have water sking and sailing. I was just there in 09, and out of all the resorts i have stayed at -- its wonderful. Also, you can go right on the beach and you will quickly come to where the islanders sell their wears adn some of the local tourist type restaurants or bar type places. You take a left and walk down about a mile past Beaches -- and you can feed the fish in the rocky area. Security is good, they do request you let them know who you are when you walk past security at the ends of the resort so they can make sure that you come back lol. But they are "on it" but not intrusive. If you go at Christmas Time, they have a Christmas Eve entertainment in the atrium garden that is really lovely - they have a full fledged New Year's Eve Party also.

My parents went to another one for two weeks last December before they went to Swept Away for their december trip actually right down the street from Swept Away- Sunset at the Palms i think it is . This is not actually on the 7 mile beach and you have to cross the street to get to the beach - that is blah for me lol. Also my mom said the food was not that great and its small. They won't go back to it but they said its not a BAD place, its just they prefer their resorts on the beach they have found.

Also, they have also stayed at Couples- negril and its a very nice place and gets good reviews. However their baby is and i think always will be Swept Away - it suits them. This Couples is part of the resorts that Swept Away belongs too.

HAVE FUN!!! angel

I don't know if you've got your hearts set on Jamaica, but I highly recommend Aruba, Barbados or Curacao.

Mom went to Jamaica last year while I did house sitting. She stay at the Rose Hill Hilton with my brother and his family. She had fun, but she did notice the poverty level is there. It is hard to hide there.

I recommend the Montego Falls...that is were my mom allowed herself to be in the water (a wee phobia about water)

@barelynangel: Thank you for the detailed recommendation.  I will definitely look into Swept Away.  :)

@windchymes: Thank you for the recommendations.  I looked into those destinations and to be honest, the prices are a little high for us right now.  But if there ever is a time we can afford, I will definitely look into those first.  :)

@ShaharThorne: Do you mean Montego Bay?

Depends on what you want from your vacation. I like to explore, wander, talk to locals and check out hidden nooks and crannies. Jamaica is not the place for me. Beautiful, but not the best place for my kind of vacation.

I've been to Jamaica twice.  The first time I stayed at Hedonism and the second Sandals Negril.  Both times I had  a great time.  Sandals Negril was nice.

Come, come to Jamaica!  I've never been, but I'll take divi's word for it.  I have wanted to go to Hedonism.

Well, maybe not.  Are they wearing leather chaps, too?  I wouldn't be able to stop laughing the whole time, if that were the case.

Jamaica was great. The 2 hour bus ride to our motel was a little long but they made a couple of stops to replenish your beer supply for the trip. You even got a bag of ice for your Red Stripe.

Well! Looks like Jamaica might not be so safe after all!
The drug lords are attacking the police it seems.

I was going to suggest anywhere BUT where Drug Lords are attacking the police. I like to 'get off the resort' and go feel the local culture so Jamaica wouldn't be ideal right now. If you like staying at the resort (hey my sister does!) then I'm sure its still okay and ultimately might be cheaper right now.

choices choices.

Actually PAHunkboy, My mom and dad are there now with no issues.  2 Do you know what happens on our OWN streets every day? and 3) its happening in Kingston and a nearby town which is on the completely opposite side of the island from Montego Bay where the airport is and Negril. And they go at least three times a year and just got back from 6 weeks there in January.

If it really wasn't safe for tourists they would be evacuating them not letting them into Jamaica and my parents just got there yesterday with no issues.  I am sure if it gets that bad they will be evacuated.

grins btw PAhunkboy and anyone who is panicking, did you know that Coke, the guy this is all about:

"Coke, 42, is the reputed leader of the Shower Posse gang with branches all over the United States."

So be careful when you walk outside, you may walk into such a gang that this guy leads.

You know folks, there is danger all over the world even in our own backyard and if you allow such stories to keep you from enjoying yourself you will have a very sad life.   Whenever you are in a foreign country its not good to just go rambling about because bad things could happen if you are careless.   Is this situation one that needs to be watched -- sure but paranoia is kinda silly.  The authorities will let the tourists know if they should leave.  The biggest thing is don't be stupid and you will be fine.

The poverty level in Jamaica is the same as it is everywhere, i also don't know why one would think it needs to be hidden.  The tourists are needed in Jamaica because its a big source of income for the islanders.

I went to an all inclusive resort in Jamaica in the 90's.  It made me realize I am not an "all inclusive" guy.  If you like that type of vacation Jamaica's resorts are as good as any. I left the compound, got a cab and explored the local towns.  We saw abject poverty and locals desperately trying to seperate chubby pink tourists from their money for a bunch of hand made crap.  The whole daily pre printed schedule and doofus blowing a whistle for the 1:30 pool volleyball game is not my idea of a vacation.  Although, the weed in Jamaica will ruin you for the dirt weed you get from your old loser high school friend at your neighborhood bar.

Suggestion:  Keep your money in the US and visit Key West.  It's like a tropical CM munch.

These types of places are great.

I go rambling about in foreign countries all the time. However, I read up on it, I take the advice of the locals, and I don't act like an ugly American. Only once have I been in a bad situation abroad. And I mean I go every fricking where! In the USA, I was bashed or mugged at least 5 times that I can think of off the top of my head. The crime rate is often lower in other countries... especially where tourists go! They don't want to lose that income.

Anyway, how about meeting me in SouthEast Asia in August? Hmmmmm?

I have been hearing that alot of people love the Dominican Republic.  I know a doc who vacations there every few months, and says it blows Jamaica, Cancun, and all the other places away.
