I couldnt disagree with nearly everyones comments more.
When all your attempts at removing the smell.. by tossing into a washing machine..spritzing it with this..or that.. or keeping it with coffee grounds, and or charcoal.. using leather stuff sold in department stores... or even stuff used in a funeral home.. none of that works.. thats when you'll take it in to a dry cleaner?
I'm telling ya, they will ask what youve done to remove the smell thus far...and you will need to tell them.
Thats leaving a huge mess, and a very large chemical soup for them to try removing, on TOP of trying to remove the original tar,nicotein stains.
Its amazing, how many times people will bring in clothing, that says "dry clean" only.. and then tell us, they dibbled at the "stain" ( wine, chocolate, blood ECT) with various things, from white wine, on down to dishsoap. If the care lable says "dry clean ONLY" or " professional Leather clean only" It does say that for a reason. Then they get mad.. that we were unable to remove the water mark..unable to remove the dishsoap stain.. unable to remove the original stain, and unable to remove scents.
I may sound like an advocate for the Dry Cleaners Of America but Im really not. I understand that people don't like paying the costs of having clothes cleaned professionally. I tend to tell those people to start making sure they read all care lables before purchasing, to make sure they can be machine washed at home.
I recently asked, after buying a secondhand silk summer blouse, on if it would be okay if i washed it by hand at home, and was told that silk is mostly handwashable..but it will dry VERY wrinkled, and a home iron cant get the correct heat to remove the wrinkles without melting or burning the silk. So, i handwashed the blouse, and took it to work with me, to steam out my own wrinkles.
Please, resist all further attempts at removing the stains on your own,and at least take it into your local dry cleaner,and ask them if they can help. tell them youve washed it in a washing machine several times, and then also describe what else youve done. They will be honest with you, and tell you if its something that can be saved by professional cleaning, or not. If they dont give you good news, take the jacket back home, and follow through with ebay complaint department.
Otherwise, be willing to spend a lil more money on having it cleaned professionally, and you very likely will get back a coat that..well..smells EXACTLY like how leather coats are sposed to smell...like leather. and not vinegar, laundry soap, or various other things spritzed on.
