i bought a jacket off ebay that came in the post about a week ago. it litterally REEKS of cigarrette smoke. its so bad that i have to keep it in a ziplock bag in a box in the basement of my house. i've tried hanging it outside for a few days, putting baking soda in it to absorb the smell, and i've washed it about 4 times. Not even a DENT in the oudor. does anybodyb have any tips or ideas to rid the smell out?

Take it to a dry cleaner. They can work magic.

Febreze?

Vodka.  Though it's better at removing really bad body odor, you might want to try.  Put some in a spray bottle and spritz away.

What is the jacket made of?

wet (used) coffee grounds or crunch up a few charcoal brickets. With both...seal tightly. But with the coffee grounds, put them on newspaper first (black and white only) so the parer can absorb the moisture and not cause any additional issues with the jacket.

If nothing else works, i would follow Sunnys suggestion and try a dry cleaner, but damn...cleaning leather costs a mint!!

it is leather- which is why a dry cleaner is my last resort. if i have to take it to one, so be it. i just wanted to try some other things before it gets to that point

Take up smoking yourself? The smell won't seem as bad then.

Incidentally, I am joking as I'm a non-smoker but I've almost gagged on the smell after people I work with return after their regular "fag break". Or friends come back into a pub, or a non-smoking house, after popping out for a cigarette. Yet, the smell never seems as bad in houses/buildings where they smoke indoors regularly.

i agree with Holly about charcoal. If not BBQ'ing charcoal, then those little charcoal bags one would use in a fish tank filter.

I work in dry cleaning, and where I work, leather can't be cleaned. Any leather that gets brought in to be cleaned gets picked up and taken care of, by a professional leather cleaner. They have a special process, but I am completely unsure about what luck that process has in removing cigarrette smoke scent.

But, what I do know is, that when people bring in normal clothing, or window curtains, drapes, the clothes NEVER lose that stinky smell. It may be a bit weaker scented, but when I steam or press them, the steam really smells awful.

And that is because its not only a scent that is the problem, it is what cigarette smoke does to the FABRIC.

Nicotein, and various tars and other additives, float around in the smoke, and are very sticky. Once it goes into fabric, like drapes for example.. it turns them a lil yelllow. Smoke a bit more, and then more yellowing.. keep puffing away, and eventually its no longer yellowing, its turning brown. That sticky yellow/brown stuff, does not like to come out. And with it, comes the ordor.

Recently watched the owner trying to clean some flags that came from inside a vets meeting place. They had to be hand washed, one at a time. The water color was so dark, it looked like coffee.

She used ammonia on them, and believe me, I often use ammonia on my home laundry, to remove various scents from the clothes, from perfumes, to deoderants, to sweat, to baby clothes, covered in urine. Ammonia works wonders with removing scents.

But those flags, a different story... when i pressed and steamed them later, there came that unmistakable scent. Just no way of removing it.

Some people bring in drapes that have hung in their houses for years and years, yellow/brown streaks covering them, and for some reason, they expect that dry cleaning is gonna save them.

Well, the stains might fade by several degrees, but those yellow streaks are still there when I press...and so is the smell. It would be cheaper, to get them replaced. And stop smoking. I am so glad I stopped 4 years ago, and never smoked in my house in the first place.

I'd never buy a house, nor curtains/drapes, nor clothing that is secondhand from a smoker. It ruins everything. If I were you, I'd write to the Ebay seller and demand to be able to return and get your money back. Otherwise, bring it to Ebay's attention.

The leather cleaning might work, I do know when things come back from the professional cleaner, everything I have ever smelled, smells like brand new leather. So, maybe that process is so far different, that it works to get the stains out. I can't really say though, cause maybe none of those coats belonged to a heavy chain smoker.
And yeah, it does cost quite alot, but I'd ask your dry cleaner what thier success is in removing such stains/scents. If they can't give you very good news, you don't need to leave it there.
I will tell you that NOTHING that your trying to do on your own is gonna work, and in fact is very likely making it WORSE. Leather is NOT sposed to be gotten wet. Spritzing liquids on it may very well be setting the stains in deeper.

If you do end up taking it to your cleaners, do please remember to tell them what you did already to the jacket while trying to remove the stains.

i really am going to. i contacted the seller just to make a note that i would have appriciate some type of indication of the cigarette smell since it was not posted in the aution and product details. and in a very snarky manner- she told me- "its not my fault- you should have asked. so dont even ask for your money back." ok...so i'm supposed to ask if you smoke before i bid on an item?

Go for it. See if eBay/Paypal can offer a refund if you return the jacket.
Start a "Dispute" ticket & see what happens.

Well, if you are planning on buying anything else on e-bay, then yes, I would suggest you ask first.

How about returning it ? Or did you intend to buy a leather jacket that reeks of smoke ?

adds: usually people on ebay say it comes from a smoke free home ..

i really dont know why i want to laugh at your post- it just gave me the giggles. but anyway, in the details it said brand new, perfect condition, came with the original tags and came with the receipt of purchase to prove its authenticity or whatever. so forgive my ignorance if i don't think heavy cigarette smoke is included for an item in perfect condition. i personally consider that a defect. unless, as the person person below you had stated, it was my intention to buy a jacket that smelled of cigarettes

Not sure why you wanted to laugh either, it wasn't funny. But the advice stands, if you go to buy clothing in the future, you should ask first.

The smell comes in even on coins I buy.

I see more listings say non-smoking.

You could ask for an adjustment in the price to pay for some leather cleaner.  I know with boots we used saddle soap on them.

I would leave it outside some more.  The sunlight can sanitize quite a bit.

I find it hard to believe that cigaerette smoke can lasts through 4 washes. Perhaps it was damaged in a fire or something stronger? Clothes washes and then dried with fabric sheets usually smell of the laundry scent even if it is a smokers clothes.

Do hang the item outside for awhile. Staying in a plastic bag will not rectify the smell.
